Why Did YOU Go See 'Fast & Furious'?
Filed under: Action, New Releases, Box Office

I'd like to hear from a few of the people who contributed to Fast & Furious's staggering $71 million gross over the weekend. Why did you go? What were you expecting, and did you get it?
See, I'm not in the camp of critics who detest this film and this franchise. But I also think that it cannot possibly be taken at face value. Fast & Furious, with its story of a daredevil FBI agent/street racer who has to go undercover to bust up a drug smuggler who regularly holds elaborate street races on the streets of Los Angeles, complete with hordes of women who are gyrating constantly, doesn't just strain credulity, it rips credulity apart with its teeth. It exists to be laughed at. And as such, it sort of works -- I spent most of the movie chuckling merrily under my breath. Fast & Furious is a constant parody of itself, and I am sure that Justin Lin -- an intelligent, skilled filmmaker -- knows that.
But that alone won't get you to $71 million. The most obvious possibility is that people went for the cars and scantily-clad females, in which case I wonder what they made of the film's sagging midsection, which contains more absurd macho brooding than anything else. (I also wonder where they were for the underperforming Tokyo Drift, which I'd suggest was more entertaining in this respect.) The fact that the franchise's box-office resurgence coincides with the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker also suggests, disturbingly, that some folks actually see this as the compelling saga of Dom Torreto and Brian O'Conner, as if those were actual characters. "Nothing matters unless you have a code," etc. Will anyone fess up to that? (Not that I am judging you. Well, maybe a little.)
I will say one thing in the film's non-ironic defense: that truck-hijacking opening sequence that featured prominently in the trailer is pretty fantastic: cleverly staged, well-edited and lucid. So maybe that was it.

I had nothing else to do and it was free. It was only fun because no one else was in the theater and we got to make fun of it and yell at how stupid it was.

I think that the people who went to the movie don't read movie blogs, in fact they probably don't read at all.

I'll own up to seeing it! I saw it because I saw the first three in theatres, and got some pretty good kicks out of all of them for different reasons-that plus I really wanted to see that scene with the two blondes hooking up, which was pretty cool. In all seriousness though, the first three were entertaining, popcorn-ish flicks about cars, guns, hot chicks, and macho guys.... sounds like an action movie to me. However, this was pretty disappointing, as it didn't even really have much racing...it was sort of a really poor way to bring the cast back together. The whole movie felt incredibly half-assed, and the writing and acting was AWFUL. Paul Walker made Keanu Reeves look like Robert De Niro (circa Raging Bull). Anyhow, I saw Adventureland the night before and thought that was a whole hell of a lot better in every way.

I had two hours to kill. I'd already seen the overrated Adventureland and wanted something different. I thought the first two clips I'd seen from F&F looked good so I decided to check it out.
The movie didn't disappoint. Of course, it didn't surprise either. It was an action packed two hours that was entertaining enough but was almost immediately forgettable.
That being said, it was the perfect storm in terms of the demographics: There really hasn't been an action film out this year since Taken. It also was a film that appealed to white, Latino, black, and Asian markets. Vin Diesel's multi-cultural background basically makes him the closest thing to both a latino leading man and, you could argue, African-American leading man (since the biggest black male lead of the year was playing a woman).

I read movie blogs. I'm not a teens/twenties dude obsessed with drag racing and macho-posturing...
I went to see this movie...and I loved it. I'm actually paying ANOTHER 12 dollars [Thank You NYC] to go see it AGAIN!
I think people [namely critics and those here that OBVIOUSLY dislike this movie, movie franchise, and it's fans] underestimate the appeal of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker standing next to glossy cars brooding at each other. There were plenty of middle-aged women in the theatre packed with gearheads and their "girlfriends."
What drew me, and I think many many others, in [how else can you explain 72.5 mil and counting] was the sheer excitement of seeing these actors reprise their roles 8 years after the original came out. To see if #4 could hold up to the first [not that the standards are extremely high]; and to see if Justin Lin was able to bring something out of this one that was better than #2 and #3. I think Lin did, and I also think that Diesel and Walker held up the "plot" relatively well, all things considered.
Either way, while the rest of you were sitting at home crying about how "Adventureland" was a big miss this past weekend [I'll be going to see Sunshine Cleaning this weekend, if that gives you any indication as to how eclectic my film/movie taste can be.], those that braved the crowds [for the most part] left the theatre with our adrenaline pumping and amped for ANOTHER sequel.
Whatever you have against Diesel, Walker, and/or the franchise, you can't deny the staying power of the fans, which are more demographically diverse than you would assume. Once again, I most definitely don't fall into the teen boy gearhead column, and I loved it. Bring on #5!!!

Alright, someone who simply smashing this film into the ground!
See, this is why I can't be a true movie critic, even if I'd like to. As it stands, I am perfectly capable of watching a movie that is entertaining and nothing else (on the flip side, I see MANY movies that are well made, well acted, well directed but lack any entertaining value whatsoever).
I knew what to expect and got exactly that, nothing more, nothing less. There was some machismo, some racing, some gratuitous/pointless girl-girl kissing, some (pretty goofy) one-liners and plenty of plot holes, but I had a really good time.

I had really been waiting for this movie. I've seen all the previous entries in the theaters and have enjoyed all of them. I'm a car fan and enjoy the characters.
The first one was original, the second was and a cool change and also had the best villian in Cole Hauser, the third was cool because it was the most racing related and the return of the original cast to the make the sequel that is 8 years in the making is just what this franchise needed after a poor box office of tokyo drift.
Tonie made a good post in saying how diverse the crowd of this film is. It brings people from all areas in because people love to drive fast in cool cars. I'd like to see a fifth one if the script is good and Paul or Vin return.
I'd also like to say if the internet bloggers want I can call the whambulence about there film Adventureland if u want, it's not superbad don't try and make it what it's not.

Because it's freaking awesome.
I didn't love the first movie. I didn't see the second movie. Then I saw Tokyo Drift in theaters as I was dragged kicking and screaming and it was so over-the-top fun, that I rethought my opinion of the series. I went back and watched them all. These movies are very 80s in a lot of respects, sort of a Beverly Hills Cop crossed with a Schwarzenegger kind of way and more retarded.
But that's ok. I loved Watchmen, but man was the movie just a boring downer that added nothing to the book. I have never wanted to get out of a theater more. Fast and Furious was kick back in my seat, unwind from constantly feeling like Obama is spending my future away and that someone is planning to take away my job and just having some fun.
As improbable as it is, I enjoy watching Paul Walker slam his co-workers face into a wall. True, he'd be fired right away in real life and its preposterous, but hasn't everyone wanted to just smash some idiot they're forced to work with's face into a wall?
It's escapism and fun.
Another thing. I have a 65inch HD TV. I try to watch my "smart" movies at home because if I'm watching "Slumdog Millionaire" or even a lot of horror movies or comedies like "I Love You Man" I don't need people adding their own soundtrack or worse the people who yell the "OH no he didn" type stuff at the screen. But I can stomach going to the theater to see FF on a gigantic screen.
Also, my girlfriend and all her friends love Paul Walker.

I saw the movie willingly and paid for it even. And yes, I do read movie blogs, thankyoueverymuch. Actually before I get to talking about why I saw the film, here are some recent movies I've seen in theaters and DVD: Coraline, Synecdoche NY, Milk, and Duplicity.
So why see this movie? Because it was mindless fun. GASP! Yes, sometimes I want to see a movie just for this reason alone. Shocking, isn't it? Plus I saw the first movie when it came out with my brother and we both had fond memories of it. We waited until DVD to see the second film and we both decidedly did not see the third one. When we heard the original cast was back, a sense of happier-go-lucky nostalgia prompted us to see the movie on opening weekend.
Was it an Oscar-worthy film? No. It's not even a spectacular racing film (too much yapping not enough racing). But do I regret watching it? Hell no. I got what I expected. The end.

I'm going to see the movie tonight because I like Vin, Paul, Michelle, and Jordana. I like all the other films and I imagine I'll like this one too.
But I seem to be different with movies than a lot of the blog writers and critics. I don't have any sort of background in critical thinking about this kind of thing. I walk into the theater to enjoy the film. Not pick apart plot structure, lighting, camera angles, or acting ability. I take a film for what it is... entertainment. Not some grand art project where every aspect of the film is supposed to be nuanced. Sure, I can spot obviously bad movies like Blood Rayne, but I can still usually enjoy them.
On the other hand, take for example Burn After Reading. I went to see it at the theater and thought overall that it was pretty boring. There were some funny scenes, but I wasn't impressed like some bloggers. It all seemed pretty pointless and wasn't really the enjoyable to me.
So, that's why I'm going to see it. Just for fun. I don't expect it to be groundbreaking, just fun.

People love action, cars, vin diesel beating people up, and attractive women (or men if a woman). It's not that hard to figure out, not every movie is made hoping to win an Academy Award. Loosen up people (critic or not) and go check out a hell of an action ride!

I have saw all three flicks, I liked all three, the actors are suitable for their roles, made the movie real and appealing! Hot Rods old and new and as said in the last flick, " Muscle always wins over nitro! I like how Muscle cars are attributed to true racing and style," showing the newbies what it is all about really. No real let downs or disappointments, I will be looking for number four too!. Let movie goers enjoy what they like looking at, critics find a new outlet for trying to make your self feel better!.

I'd rather watching this movie again than watching Adventureland. Why? At least, this movie is entertaining, not like Adventureland, it's so boring and cliché. Who cares about those charaters?
Maybe because Adventureland played at Sundance, so somebody who want to show the world that 'I watch indie film, I'm intellectual audience, I'm more artistic than you' to watch that movie.

All the movies in the franchise were bad. This one was no exception.
However, knowing this didn't stop me from seeing Fast & Furious this weekend. Why?
It's a guilty pleasure. While I didn't care for the second or third movies, I really, really loved the first one. Just hearing that Vin Diesel and Paul Walker would be back got me all excited. Would I have gone to see it if they weren't in it? Not at all.
But they were, so I went. And the movie lived up to my expectations.
- Were Vin Diesel and Paul Walker smoking hot? Yes.
- Homoerotic undertones present? Yes.
- General badassery? Yup.
So yeah, I will admit to watching for the next installment of the compelling saga of Dom and Brian. It's the greatest love story ever! Those smoldering looks, the distance glances... and when Paul Walker smiles, my heart sings! You can bet if they make another movie with the same cast, I'll be there yet again!
What? Some moviegoers are easy to please.

i just finished watching it. predictable in that the boss was gonna be the one they were talking to the whole time. the final scene a bit of a let down in that he didnt get to fight the guy he wanted so badly. he just ran him over.
umm the female lead was attractive none the less im about go to wikipedia and see who the hell she is.
this box office take and the fact that neither paul walker and vin diesel have done a anything close to this in a while. paul walker last movie i enjoyed was running scared.
i know he made flags of our father it didnt interest me and i didnt see it.
vin diesel last relevant movie was the first fast and the furious so i expect another sequel and i am SHOCKEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD at the fact it did 71 million. i had a feeling it might do well but i didnt expect anything over 25mill
studios must be scratching their head and wondering how this worked
