'The Ugly Truth' Gets a Pretty New Trailer

Oh, Gerard Butler. How do I reconcile my feelings towards you? I go from crushing hard on you to wanting to smack you in the face when you show up in the tabloids and TMZ. (I miss the days when I knew you only as "that Scottish dude from the Tomb Raider sequel.")
But don't take that too personally Mr. Butler, because it's also how I feel about the trailer for The Ugly Truth. (I miss the days when I knew you only as Pillow Talk.)
I mean, it looks funny. I laugh and yet it also causes me to wince, not only at its predictability, but at what it might really be saying about men, women, and dating. Even knowing how it must happily turn out, it's still the kind of story that makes me feel all squirmy and insecure, and tempted to join a nunnery lest I encounter "hilarious" situations like this.
So, without further whining, here's the latest trailer for The Ugly Truth, courtesy of MySpace's Trailer Park. You might remember that the raunchy romantic comedy was supposed to be released this month, but was pushed back to compete with Judd Apatow. Some scenes were played at ShoWest last week to a lot of laughs and thumbs-up, which made Sony very confident in that July 24 date. See what you think.

My verdict:
Could have some hearty laughs, but will ultimately be weighed down by its formulaic plot.

Elisabeth: I feel EXACTLY the same way. The guy is such a good actor at times. I want to see him in good parts with a good director (to rein in his tendency to want to inject his personality into every part). I want more Dear Frankie. I mean, he can act and when he really dials it down -- wow.

I have to agree with you on a few points. I'm not a fan of rom-coms in general and I wasn't looking forward to this one, even though I knew wild horses couldn't have kept from doing so. (Gerard Butler's in it! C'mon!) I admit to being swayed by the "R" rating and thinking that that alone will lift it above familiar. I also admit to being dazzled by this new trailer. (Oooo shiny!) I think the comparisons to Pillow Talk are no accident (it's what I thought of as well) and have no delusions about it being anything other than formulaic.
However, if for no other reason than the presence of Mr. Butler (I like that is one is steeped in "the Juice"), I can see this becoming a guilty pleasure movie that I turn to again and again.
But, having said all that, I too wish he'd turn his considerable chops to something a little meatier. I hope the announced Burns biofilm fills that bill. And if a high profile bit of fluff like this one means they will get butts in the seats for that one, I can deal

Hi, Elisabeth - Thanx (once again) for your candid and (for me anyway) spot-on observations about TUT. I've been a big GB fan for over 4 years (ever since 'Phantom') and have really winced myself on several occasions thru relentless tabloid and other slick expose-type 'offerings' that do nothing to enhance a celeb's profile. And on the rare occasions they do, well, it's almost like a breath of fresh air. I probably will go to this one, but only expect to see it once. Yes, bring on 'Burns' and next year 'Law Abiding Citizen' and even the violent 'Game' set for release in September. (At least it will be a hard-hitting action flick that GB pulls off so well...) The typical, raunchy comedies that have become de rigueur in the last several years rarely display an actor's true range and expertise. Cait

Hey Elisabeth! I always enjoy you (prob b/c I agree 99.9% of the time & I always laugh).
Mr. Butler, wow, where to begin? I think we can establish that he's opted for fame & fortune (to each his own). Re: "Burns" I withhold my opinion until we can see if they devote 90min-to-2hrs to Burns' love life. Somehow I kind of don't trust them. Re: his personal life, I honestly don't believe 80% of what is printed. But I also think he's a good-looking, somewhat famous guy, with more money than he should have, enjoying himself. Sue him.
Here's the thing tho: I honestly wish there were preferable outlets for Heigl & others rather than playing the stereotypical, Hollywood, man-hating, bitchy, humorless, businesswoman, who of course can't find love. (They've even thrown in a cat for good measure.) The men are always womanizing (which inexplicably translates into woman "loving" ??), sweet, doofy (but not stupid), funny, & misunderstood guys-guys who in a particularly malicious twist just happen to have a lot to teach the bitch about how to understand & love men.
Enough already (both men & women writers). It's getting beyond endurance. It's embarrassing as "Pillow Talk" was released 1959. That's 50 yrs of this crapola. And Columbia & Lakeshore are betting we will pay lots of $$ for this.
And SEE, now I'm sounding like the "mean, humorless" woman in this dopey movie! Ack! Look, I love movies and end up watching everything. All movies don't have to be award material. That's not the point. But come on how long are women (b/c they work & have an opinion) going to be the 'bad guys'?
There are no good guys and bad guys. It's just life & the people in it. They're writers & they can't find stories funny enough, weighty enough, meaty enough, that entertain?
Don't tell me they're 'Going Green' by recycling. They're just falling down on the job.
