Monday Night Poll: Are Zac and Miley Movie Stars?

Strictly as an outside observer, I'm always surprised / perplexed by teen sensations making the leap to the big screen. The latest examples are Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron. Are they really movie stars already? Or are they beloved by millions simply because of the character(s) they've played?
When Cinematical's Dawn Taylor recently expressed her horror at the idea that Cyrus, a "marginally talented, pudding-faced 'tween idol," would be starring in a movie written by Nicholas Sparks, commenters were divided between hating Miley and hating Dawn. Nick Schager's review of Hannah Montana: The Movie was quite negative ("enduring the film is akin to being drawn and quartered"), but fans had clearly already decided to flock to theaters no matter what the reviews said. The narrative follow-up to the 3-D Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour proves, if nothing else, that 'tweens love Hannah Montana. But do they love the actress who plays her enough to follow her in other roles?
Efron has been making an effort to demonstrate his range beyond the High School Musical movies. He took on a dramatic role in Richard Linklater's yet to be released Me and Orson Welles, decided not to dance in Footloose, and stars in the comedy 17 Again, which opens on Friday. Is he a deft comic actor? I don't know. I missed Saturday Night Live, which he hosted last weekend, and the recent Pool Party video was not very funny. He became beloved for his singing, dancing, and romancing, but will his fans follow him to comedic and dramatic roles?
Do Zac Efron and/or Miley Cyrus have what it takes to be movie stars? Take our poll and let us know.

My personal definition of a star is:
A name with a rabid enough fanbase to attract audiences regardless of the film's other qualities.
I'm sorry, but neither can attract audiences no matter what, because Zac Efron, were he to say play a gay character or a character that is hideously malformed, would completely lose his fanbase.
Same thing for miley, only aside from the hideously malformed aspect, she would lose all of her built in fanbase were she to do anything that warrented an R rating.

know everyone's going to hate me but i don't think its fair to judge Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron quite yet. They're only just starting out in the movies after all. Plus I think the thing about the characrers they've played is true. At this point, people are probably going to say I'm a moron because they're just popular for their looks and merchandise, which is the reason behind the tension of the fans and the haters because of the overhype the companies cause so they can get it that whenever they stamp Efron and Cyrus' names on it, they know it will make a load of cash..
This is true but it just means that they haven't gotten a chance to proove their acting chops yet. There are some good examples of their acting skills like Zac Efron in Hairspray and Miley Cyrus in Bolt. I thought they were great. And no, I'm not a High School Musical or Hannah Montana fan. While I do like the first High School Musical and I've seen several episodes of Hannah Montana, I'm not a fan of either series overall. Personally, I'm just going to wait and see what the future holds for them.

Miley wasn't bad in Hannah Montana: The Movie. She surprised me. It wasn't mind blowing or amazing, but it was good. Zac was great in Hairspray. We can't really judge them since they haven't been in anything that can display their talent or show what they are capable of yet. Miley has The Last Song and Zac has Me and Orson Welles. Both are dramas. We should have more of a decision based on those.

I think it depends on what you definition of a moviestar is. If we consider Nailbunnys defenition, how few actors even fit into that category? I can think of Will Smith, maybe, but even he would have trouble selling a movie about a hideously malformed gay man.
Right now, I think Miley Cyrus has the type of fame similar to what Hilary Duff had a few years ago, due to the fact that she's well known for one character on television. Looking at her IMDB, she hasn't done anything outside of Disney expect Big Fish. For that reason, she isn't a movie star yet, although it will be interesting to see how she does in the next few years. It's hard for anyone to judge her acting abilities based on what they produce in Disney films.
Zac Efron, however, is different because he's already attempted to branch out of doing Disney films. Firstly, the kid didn't start out doing Disney stuff. His first role was Young Simon in Firefly, and he guest stared on a few TV shows and was in the main cast of another one. Me and Orson Welles, Hairspray and 17 Again are enough for me to consider him as someone outside of the Disney machine, and I think that's mainly where all the critisim the two of them face comes from.
Both of them are pretty early into their careers, Miley isn't even 17 yet, so I think it's way too early to judge them. But Zac looks like he's on the right path. And the HSM4 sketch on SNL was funny too.

Zac has the potential to at least be a real movie actor. Miley on the other hand, stands a pretty good chance of ending up as just another "child star" who finds it difficult to get adult roles. She doesn't seem to have the acting chops.

I'm kind of with Vegimorph here. As much fun as it is to knock down people who make more money than we do, it is a little embarassing.
That said, I'm a little confused by the use of "movie star" here. Do you mean "actor?"
I see a movie star as a celebtrity who stars in film and an actor as a thespian. Two very different things.

I'm not going to call anyone crazy here because I'm writing this with the results of their latest movies known, but I would have said the same back in April.
Zac Efron is a movie star. He not only can pull in an audience; but, his movie made as much overseas as here. A fantastic result for his first non-franchise effort.
I don't know why people are out of the loop; but, Miley Cyrus is a SUPERSTAR!!! Her film is on track to make 1 1/2 times it's domestic take, a result comparable to Angelina Jolie's last action movie. Her fans will watch any movie she puts out.
Frankly, I'm angry at the movie critic establishment because I feel they successfully stopped her film from gaining a larger audience beyond her fan base. Still, it's going to make $200,000,000 worldwide!!!
All of her projects do better than her previous efforts which means her career is still building. I'm hoping her next movie can do $100,000,000 domestically as the critics will not be able to label it a movie for little kids.
See you at her successful Arena Tour!

p.s
75 cents per ticket sold at her concerts will go towards cancer treatment and research. About one million dollars:)
