Fox's Plans for the 'X-Men First Class' Franchise

Fox's plans for X-Men: First Class became official back in November, assigning Josh Schwartz the enjoyable task of scripting an adventure for up-and-coming X-Men. At the time, it wasn't clear if the film would be based on the comic book series that follows a young Cyclops & Co, or if it would be a sequel to X3 that followed Kitty Pryde, Iceman, and Colossus. Lauren Shuler-Donner gave the answer during big interview on Fox's Life After Film School show and to the surprise of no one, X-Men: First Class will be a prequel. "It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that'll be really fun. I think [the plan] is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world. And hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up." Given that a young Cyclops appears in X-Men Origin: Wolverine, the plans are obviously already in motion.
Personally, I was hoping for a series that did follow the "new class," because then we could have a Wolverine and Kitty Pryde match-up. It seems a bit dull to have a series following characters you know survive to become X-Men -- but considering I happily read Wolverine: First Class my argument isn't exactly watertight. At least the transformation from Beast from a man to a furry blue cat would be interesting ... but really, shouldn't Fox be looking forward with their characters, not back?

I like this idea, but unfortunately, if they keep with the movie continuity, they won't be able to use Angel or Iceman. That's too bad, because it would be really cool to see an original X-Men movie, with them up against the original Brotherhood members (like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver). I wonder if they'll put Storm as one of the original members instead?

Since the first three X-Men films shifted the focus more towards Wolverine and Storm, I think the idea of showing the progresion of the original group is a great idea. In fact, I wish we could forget that X3 was ever made and see them do a real Dark Phoenix story, which is easily the best story arc the X-Men comic series has ever produced.

I'm with you on the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine thing. One of the best X-Men stories ever written, imo. Loved it. Far as a teenage X-Men movies goe, I'd much rather see them do The New Mutants than go backwards with the X-Men. I'm not sure which character they think is going to carry the film, to be honest. None of them are that great. Cyclops is a douche, always has been. Jean Gray is alright, but she doesn't really get awesome until Dark Phoenix. Iceman is a goofball, and we've already seen him in the other films... along with Beat and Angel. I'm not seeing what is to be gained here, unless it's intended to profit from the X-Men brand. Maybe they expect it to make a ton of money based entirely on the fact that it's another X-Men movie. Comic fans will go for it, sure, but what about everybody else? I can see it making a bunch of money or whatever, people have to go and see something, but I'd much rather see another mutant group and wait for X-Men IV. Just imagine the right script, the right director, and Magneto as Headmaster of Xaviers School...

If Star Trek does well in the box office, which it will, can you imagine how many new revamps/reboots will come out with a "young, hipper" version of the originals? This film may just be on the cusp of the next trend.
I'm looking forward to this one though. X-3 needs to be erased from memory.

This Josh Schwartz had better be skilled- Chris Nolan skills. Her comments make it sound as though they are going to generate a new franchise that will adhere to the film continuity. I don't see them making that interesting unless they go in for a whole new cast for magneto and xavier and jean, cyke, and beast and storm and if they are willing to go retro in a good way and bring on banshee and thunderbird. I think to make it plausible you'd have to get a new villain too like the hellfire club and if you are going to make it work for a trilogy set then you'd have to get into some outer space stuff. The hard part is all the kids you can't use because of the previous trilogy and the fact that if there is ever going to be a movie to follow up the cliffhanger of Xmen 3 then by the time they get around to doing it everyone will be too old. I think it is more plausible this will be a one-movie deal and the franchise they speak of is the constant origins idea. At least I get to continue to watch them and gripe about it online.

I guess I'm by myself on the opinion that X3 wasn't THAT bad (It certainly wasn't good, but it wasn't Howard the Duck either).
But I'm of the opinion that the only upside to seeing the current players as teens would be if Wolverine was involved. And I don't see them changing the movie storylines they've developed.
So, I'd much rather see them do a movie using some of the younger mutants that they currently have on the 'movie' team (Kitty Pride, Colossus, Iceman, Rogue, etc). The knock is there's no real 'star' in that group of actors, so they'd have to bring in someone, and that concept scares me (I don't want to see Zac Effron in an X-Men movie).

I'm sure I am not the only one who is looking forward in seeing Storm and Wolverine in this new film, because if you'll want to have a first class, a uncanny must be apart of it, as it was in the comics. I know that this film will be "da bomb" with or without these wonderful opinions and comments!

Am I alone here? After, count 'em, FOUR X-Men movies with Hugh Jackman/Wolverine as the star... haven't we seen quite enough of Wolverine, especially since he now has his own spin-off series? I can't fathom the amount of mileage they've gotten out of the character already but enough is enough. It's called X-Men, as in—a team. As far as I can see, the only "teaming" we saw was at the very end of X3.
