Will Arnold's Cameo Make or Break 'Terminator Salvation'?

As much as I loved Adam West and Michael Keaton in their respective Batman roles, if either one had popped up in Batman Begins or The Dark Knight, I would have thrown things at the screen. They were good in their time and place, but Christopher Nolan understood that he needed to break from the past in order for the masked character to have a future. Thus, the confirmation from Variety that Arnold Schwarzenegger will appear in McG's Terminator Salvation -- in digital form, no less! -- does not fill my heart with gladness.
The trade paper relates Governor Schwarzenegger's comments in a webcast this week that he wanted to appear in the movie, but didn't want to act. (What, he was acting before? Could have fooled me -- I thought he was a killing machine from the future.) It turns out that "a body-cast mold of Schwarzenegger created when he first appeared as the muscle-ripped cyborg, provided the basis for a digital-effects version of his famous character. The figure appears in Terminator Salvation as a living, breathing actor."
From the trailers, I'm coming around to the idea that McG might be able to pull off a decent action movie. Christian Bale has been terrific in just about everything he's done. And I can live without seeing Moon Bloodgood's naked breasts. But the implied idea that an appearance by Schwarzenegger is so mandatory to the success of the movie that a digital substitute has been ordered up and inserted ... aargh!!
I say, let the movie live or die on its own. What do you think? Will Arnold's cameo make or break Terminator Salvation?

it's insurance. a lot of folks might otherwise say 'what, terminator and no arnie?! nah!'. also, as the story goes. it's arnie who's to kill connor.

I don't think it'll make or break the film, but it is a different beast than a West/Keaton cameo in that Arnold's character (presumably) existed in the context of this new film.
Whether it is played straight or is a mere tossed bone, however, will make or break the cameo.

Flatly saying "he didn't want to act" is not the full story. Regardless, this is completely different than Keaton appearing in a Batman film. Arnold is a machine and thus there can be multiples of him. It makes sense.
I agree that it needs to be well played into the story.

I actually like the idea. Cameos from the actor who used to play the role are one thing, but terminators who are seen in the past should definitely pop up, in some way, in the future. Esp Arnie -- who was important enough to kick off the whole save John Connor thing, twice.

I think if I were to add Arnie in, it would be to show how/why the terminators took his form/appearance.
Say, something along the lines of a captured prisoner who had an efficient body structure and something they could make parts and electronics fit into. Something strong and durable or whatever.
Don't use him as a terminator, use him as the base for a terminator... ie, the model.

It doesn't matter to me one way or the other if he's in it.

I don't think he needs to be the movie. From what I've seen in the previews it looks to earlier for his storyline to be added right now.

Of course he can make a quick show up, he was a machine. It's not like Batman because it's a sequel, not a reboot. Simple as that.

Why not? This is still a sequel(or at least an alternate universe).

I dont think McG and Bale's movie is good. Bale did crap too like New World,Harsh Times,Prestige and Im not there.
Sorry a cameo is nothing. Terminator is about Arnie and James Cameron for me.

Arnie's cameo is very important even in for a split second. He came off an assembly line so there has to be multiple of him in the future and for John Conner to run into him is just plain perfect to the story. In my opinion of course =)

Just out of curiosity...Does anyone know if they asked or invited anyone else from the original cast of the Terminator to be in this movie besides Arnold? For example, Michael Biehn or Linda Hamilton?

Saw the movie, it is a good action flick. I think the arnold scene was well done. I was sceptical about the movie without Arnold but it stands on its own. If you like Terminator movies, you will like this one.

The scene with Arnold was very well done--the right dynamics with the right people in the right setting at the right time. It wasn't overdone and I don't think it makes or breaks the movie--the film stands on its own. I believe the digital cameo was neccessary to begin to connect the dots between the past, the future, and the future past. This movie is as much a prequel as it is a sequel.
This is the first Terminator movie to take place chronologically after Judgment Day, without any time travel or flashbacks from the future. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Salvation trilogy plays out, with time travel and the possibility of infinite alternate realities and the butterfly effect. How will John Connor defeat Skynet while making sure key events involving humans and machines take place in the future past in order to secure his very existence?

Although Arnold was not needed to "make or break" the movie, he was needed to play the role of the T800 which was sent back to protect John Connor. I honestly wish he was in it more. I believe that he's going to be in the next two movies as well. Like Frankenberrie said, he was made in an assembly line, so there are thousands of him... probably...

Eh? T1 and T2 Arnies were T-800's, Model 101. T3 (sigh) was a T-850! Damn son!

Well, here comes geekness... whatever. Mike, there have been two different "Arnie" terminators (according to the story so far) seen. Here's how it supposedly works:
Terminators come in different Series of endoskeleton combat chassis. The Infiltrator versions have different Models of flesh coverings. The Arnie face is a Model 101 flesh covering. In the original film and Terminator 2, the terminator we saw that looked like Arnie was a Series 800 combat chassis with a Model 101 covering. In Terminator 3 the "Arnie" character was a Series 850 Model 101.
The REALLY fun thing, though, is figuring out why Reese described the T-800 as 'new' in the original film, and the T850 in T3 describes himself as 'obselete'. :)

Just saw this last night, really enjoyed it.
The batman analogy is inncorrect and not applicable in this case.
Terminator has a cronological apsect, the new film, allthough in the future, happened BEFORE the events of the first movie as we viewed it - therefore, for accuracy, it was fitting to have Arnolds face in on the machines. Note how it was Arnolds face circa mid 80s they used to be visually fitting to what we saw in first movie. This is simply good continuity. To even discuss whether or not this will make or break the movie is silly in the extreme - his facial image is only on the screen for a minute or two at most.
Its a cool tie in to the first movie (there were lots) that make fans like me go cold with excitement. Sad I know.
This franchise can be great if people let it - and can get their heads away from the Arnie thing. Plot, acting, effects all good - judge the film on its own merits, not a minute or two of CGi actor from 25 years ago...
