Trailer for 'H2'! (Gesundheit.)
Filed under: Horror, The Weinstein Co., Remakes and Sequels, Summer Movies, Trailers and Clips
I'm a horror fan, but I'm not one of those demented geeks who sits in his cluttered basement wishing he could remake Frankenstein in order to explain the monster's tortured family life before he was resurrected by the good doctor. Thus I was more than a little perplexed when self-professed hardcore horror fan Rob Zombie so eagerly jumped into the director's chair to make his own version of John Carpenter's classic Halloween. What made him think he could improve on perfection?
I agree completely with Cinematical's Scott Weinberg, who recently Tweeted: "Corpses and Rejects are to horror what Epic and Date are to comedy." Of course, he was talking about Zombie's initial forays into the horror field, House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. If you haven't seen them, don't worry: they're simple, fanboy pastiches of earlier, better films that influenced Zombie. Rejects was a modest improvement over Corpses, but, by all accounts, his Halloween in 2007 was a total misfire that pleased no one but the studio bean counters.
I confess, I haven't seen it yet -- my most trusted horror guru (read his review) advised me to save my money -- and the new trailer for H2: Halloween 2 does not inspire much hope for the sequel to the remake. The trailer promises that "the secret" will be revealed. Like Halloween II, the original sequel directed by Rick Rosenthal, this one features a lot of hospital footage. You can watch it over at Yahoo! (or below) and glory, if you choose, in the prospect of more Sheri Moon Zombie. Tyler Mane returns as Michael Myers, along with Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell, and Danielle Harris. H2: Halloween 2 Electric Boogaloo hits theaters on August 28.

Your flippant dismissal of Zombie's work is kind of ridiculous. And I don't know where anyone gets off comparing his contributions to flicks like "Epic Movie" when there are far more limp and useless horror movies out there. Why reserve your hatred for Zombie when assholes continue to churn out quality work like the remake of "Prom Night". Excuse me I just threw up a little.

His movies aren't as awful as those stupid films, but they're basically basically constructed the same way.

I think that Rob Zombie is a great fan of horror. I still think that Devil's Rejects is a great homage to the 70's grindhouse films. I thought 1000 corpses was a good attempt. He is a fan of horror and the 1st thing that they teach you in film school is film and write what you know. On that point.....
Halloween I thought was a disaster! The original still stands the test of time and I thought if he just stayed closer to the original material and didn't cop out by making Myers as a victim of circumstances or environment was a complete cop out. It was an ok attempt, but a remake was totally unnecessary.
I think this might be a whole bunch better than the 1st one he did. I can see him adding his brand of style to a strong story. We'll see. As a horror fan and an aficionado, I am skeptical but will go in it with a clear mind of judgement!!!!

I like Zombie's movies. They are better than 75% of the junk horror that comes out every year, and a 1000 times better than Epic Movie. They may not hold up well compared to the greats but I find them very entertaining.

I like to refer to the Zombie hate as horror elitism. I cant figure out what it is about him that pisses off the horror the elites. Sure, you could compare the original Halloween to RZ's Halloween. Obviously, RZ's was inferior but to stomp on and then defecate on is just ridiculous when you consider how other horror remakes are just given a pass.
Here is a guy, who I believe, really puts his heart into making a well thought out film. It's his vision but it doesnt always work. Personally, I think Devils Rejects was a steamy pile but there are moments in that movie I will never forget (tuttiFu***Frutti). His films are rarely forgettable.
Yet, we give a pass to Prom Night (remake), My Bloody Valentine (remake), Friday the 13th (remake), The Hills Have Eyes (remake), Last House on the Left (remake)... And on and on...
Those movies were made by hacks... Yet Rob Zombie should be run out of hollywood for making creative and memorable (though not always good) low budget movies.
Yea... I can so see the logic :-\

I love generic horror, as well as generic remakes of horror classics that never needed to be remade because they still work.
As a film maker, Rob Zombie doesn't have an original bone in his body. I'll save my $8.50.

Zombie's ego is his down fall. Corpes and Rejects, they basically suck, but thats okay, alot of horror sucks, But Rob should have known he didn't have the skills to pull off a remake of the greastest piece of horror history. Zombie just couldn't admit that to himself and as a result we have a crappy Halloween and probably a crappy sequel. I will however promote the problem and see the movie when it comes out. Not for Rob but for Michael.

The thing is, I liked it and a lot of my friends did but we're huge horror movie snobs, especially when it comes to remakes. I remember seeing the trailer for "The Hills Have Eyes" on the front of "Wolf Creek" and within the first three seconds, I looked at my friend and said, "what the deuce is this, Hills Have Eyes?" Sure enough, it was...
I liked the whole idea behind it, explaining the beginning story and whatnot. What I can't stand right now is the fact that they, the company, pressured Zombie into making a sequel even with the ending he had given the first one.
Who knows? All I know is I'm pissed about them remaking "Hellraiser" and I'm just waiting to hear if they remake "Candyman" or "Dr. Giggles".

I prefaced that with "by all accounts" and linked to a review. The general critical reaction was not favorable. I talked to many horror fans at the time, who were not favorable. For this article, I researched various horror sites as well, and that was the consensus I reached.
Thanks for reading.

Why is it so hard for people to separate the original and the remake? Cant they both exist as their own separate things?
christ.
JC's Halloween was great.
RZ's Halloween was not as good as the original SURE but it WAS a decent movie.

Damn right. RZ's Halloween basically flipped Carpenter's on its head, and the result was an inferior but still pretty good horror movie.
And so far as I'm concerned, you can talk to as many 'horror fans' and read as many negative reviews as you like, but if you haven't seen a movie you shouldn't call it crap -- that's just lazy.

I can't see how anyone who is a big fan of Carpenter's original also liking Zombies remake. Why? Because Zombie had No interest at all in developing the Laurie Strode character. None. She's written as an after thought as Zombie only cared about Myers. Jamie Lee Curtis's Laurie was the heart of the original. Once you cut out the heart the rest dies! Also-Myers mother haunting him in this new trailer is just stupid.
