'30 Days of Night' Sequel Going Straight to DVD ... Probably
Filed under: Horror, Sony, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
There's nothing quite like the phrase 'straight to DVD' to kill a film's chance of a little dignity, is there? The first thing that usually crosses my mind is, "It must be pretty bad if they aren't even willing to put it up on the big screen" -- which might be a tad unfair of me, but no one ever said gut reactions were fair. Hopefully this time I'll be proven wrong, because in a conversation with MTV Steve Niles (co-creator of the original graphic novel, 30 Days of Night) confirmed that a sequel to the 2007 vampire flick was already in the works, and that it would most likely be going direct to DVD. According to Niles, a script has already been submitted, and he is hard at work on the project with Ben Ketai (director of the 30 Days webisodes). The sequel will be based on the comic book follow-up Dark Days, and the story centers on "the character of Stella Olemaun [who] heads to Los Angeles after surviving the vampire attack in Barrow, Alaska. She intentionally attracts the attention of the local vampire population in order to avenge the death of her husband, Eben, during the Barrow incident."
After the jump find out how Sam Raimi got involved and the possibility of a 30 Days franchise...
So what was the reason for the DVD decision? According to Niles, it all came down to money; he notes, "We didn't hit that magic $100 million." But, Niles has come around to the DVD idea since a good fairy by the name of Sam Raimi convinced him the DVD strategy wasn't all doom and gloom. According to Niles, "[Raimi] called me and just said, 'Don't be too quick to judge this direct-to-DVD market, especially with the sci-fi market." Which I guess was enough to convince Niles that there might be an upside to selling straight to the fans; namely, the possibility of even more 30 Days of Night films in the near future. Niles told MTV that a direct to DVD strategy meant, "...we'd be able to do all the comics, we won't have the massive competition of the box office, and theoretically, we could move on to 'Return to Barrow' and to the other series and short stories."
Good news if you're a fan of the original books, though I can't help but wonder if quantity over quality is really the way to go -- how about you?

A group of us of varying ages (6-27) went to see the 1st one in theatres.NONE of us liked it. (which is a rare thing since usually at least 1 of the gp will like the movie the others wont) And so, considering how awful the 1st movie was, I could only hope that the straight-to-dvd thing might be good for it. Maybe this will fix the problems in the last one.
I wanted to ck out the comics but after how bad the movie was I just wasnt interested.

I just read Dark Days earlier this week. Weird.
I think the 30DoN movie was a missed opportunity ruined by poor pacing. What worked on the page became a real slog on film.
BUT... the story for Dark Days has potential to be MASSIVE! Like "Road Warrior as compared to Mad Max" massive! It's a better story and could stand on its own without drawing attention to the fact that it's a sequel to a movie that wasn't a blockbuster. I didn't like the first film and I'd see this if the right people were involved. It just needs a good action director and whatever actress is perpetually second on the list in case Angelina Jolie says no to any project.
HUGE missed opportunity if they aim low on this one.

Im not sure how many of the previous comments were made my people who had read the comic, but i have and i believe the comic was a accurate portrail of the books and even though the film wasn't fast past neither was the comic, and the comic has never been a big hit as others like spider man or x-men, but people who i have introduced to the comic (30 days of night) have enjoyed the comic. I could understand the principle of releasing in to a straight to dvd market, but in fairness i would rather no more films get made. 30 days of night was a great film imo but it should stay as a stand alone film, a singular media represenation of a great comic. That way it cant be tainted by the film industries obvious willingness to make substandard films compared to the original as long as it makes a quick buck at the exspense of the original rather than making something that films that give a equal or greater theatrical experience to the precious , the film industry just cant make good sequels or trilogies, let alone spin off's, a few films for examples, x-men 3, terminator 3:rise of the machines, lord of the rings 3, x-men origins:wolverine, the hills have eyes 2, spider man 3, chronicles of riddick, grudge 2. All of these (prob except the hills have eyes) did well at the box office even though personally they were less than average films in my mind and reduced the brilliance of the originals. Just because a film does well at the box office doesn't make it a great film, and just because it doesn't, doesn't make it a bad film.
30 days of night is aimed at a select target market and its target market like it. Leave the film as a stand alone......make some more comics.
sorry if this makes no sense, or i haven't got my opinion across.
