Katie Holmes Will Face Guillermo del Toro's Darkness
Filed under: Thrillers, Casting
Mad Money certainly didn't do anything for Katie Holmes' career, and proved to be a supremely crappy follow-up to Thank You For Smoking. However, she may just have found a gig to thrust her back into the cinematic spotlight. Variety reports that Holmes will star in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark -- the thriller written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins, which Troy Nixey (a del Toro protege) will direct.Remember the project? It's the remake of the 1973 ABC television movie that got cooking last summer. The telepic followed a young girl who moves in with her father and new girlfriend. Rather than having to deal with the frights of new mommies, the girl faces creepy, napkin-stealing monsters -- classic '70s chills.
Now the obvious question is: What will this do for Ms. Holmes? Nolan's Batman didn't help at all, and in fact hurt when Maggie Gyllenhaal ruled the role, but facing devilish creatures is a lot different than being a woman of Gotham law. Does Katie have what it takes to face del Toro's demons? Or, do you think it will follow in her tradition of Disturbing Behavior and Teaching Mrs. Tingle? I'm hoping for the former. I've been waiting a while to see the magic of Libbets Casey come back to the big screen.

So Guillermo is officially a scientologist now? Welp, I'm out. It was good while it lasted, Toro, but I knew I wouldn't be able to support your work forever. Too bad you went to the dark side.

I think this is the stupidiest comment I've read all day and it just started. Just because Toro's working with Katie doesnt mean he's a scientologist. He's the director and she's the actor plain and simple I think if they just wanted it personal they wouldnt need to make a movie to do so.

If you are considering actresses for your role, religion (Even made-up ones) should be a huge part of who you cast, because it states that you support said religion if you decide to cast someone so devout in their belief. Not to mention how many young actresses are out there dying for roles, yet you pick Katie Holmes, and established freak.
So if you cast Tom Cruise, you might as well be Tom Cruise, because you're that dead to me.

You're entitled to your own opinion, and ordinarily when I see you on the same boards as me, we enthusiastically agree, but I just can't get with that. I don't think one has got anything to do with the other.
And am I the only guy left in the world who never stopped liking Tom Cruise? Yeah, he's weird, but he's still the man.

So you are saying Stanely Kubrick, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood in his his time,, chose Cruise and Kidman because he was into scientology. Please! You just want attention.

Katie is becoming Nicole. She stands regally and queitly in her designer clothes and looks off into the distance like the good little Stepford wife she has become and now she is beginning the "dark" movies phase. This stuff is weird. Tom really is proud of his little girl with her animation and individuality but does not extend that to his wives.

Reader poll: does anyone who's not a fan of Dawson's Creek ever need to see another Katie Holmes 'performance' again? Tom and his Scientology ways did us a huge favor taking her out of circulation.

You failed to mention Katie rocked in Pieces of April and the Gift. Critics and fans loved her in Arthur Miller(she charmed NY's Broadway's economy). Put down the tabloids and you will see every poll, youtube poll and Batman forums all preferring Katie than Maggie in the Batfranchise.
Cant wait for this.

I want more movies for Tom also Katie. So wise for Katie venturing on blockbusters,Broadway,tv and diverse genres but I hope she remains an Indie actress. Gotta concur she's Rachel Dawes in Batman not Gyllenhaal.

She's a bright star to come and quite a classy young lady which is so rare these days particularly in Hollywood.
Hopefully an action movie is up her alley next and she wont be pressured to do pornish roles or jewish plots to entice Hollywood Oscar politics.

Katie also got many love from Broadway quite impressive considering Denzel,Freeman,Piven,Garner and Julia Roberts didnt get that kind of love from critics and the people vs the Broadway vets.
