Review: Star Trek

When it comes to a franchise as beloved as Star Trek, I suppose it's important to let people know where you stand, right at the beginning: I never was able to get into the original Star Trek series (probably because I'd already been indoctrinated into the Star Wars religion), but I knew enough to become a big fan of the first three cinematic adaptations. I think The Motion Picture is a fine (if slightly overlong) re-awakening of the franchise, and I'm a big fan of both The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. The rest of the features are slight and forgettable (at best) or drearily familiar, which is slightly annoying because I absolutely adore The Next Generation on the small screen. On the big one? Not so much.
But beyond the impact and popularity of a lone franchise, I'm just a huge science fiction fan. Anything that can delve deep into the future and dazzle me with something flashy or fascinating is a good thing indeed. But what makes Star Trek such a long-lasting and rabidly adored franchise is that it goes beyond simple "alien adventures" and touches upon ideas, questions, and issues that we always contend with in the "real" world. If you have to travel 100,000 miles and deal with purple aliens to make a clever point about, say, racism, then let's hear it for basic-yet-admirable subtext. So yes, Star Trek has always been a smart, insightful, and topical space adventure, but this time out ... it's mostly just fun.
Yes, it's an all-new reboot of one of the most beloved series of all time. Which means director J.J. Abrams and his filmmaking crew are walking on very thin ice. True, it's not like the Star Trek series has never seen a bad film, but when you're retro-fitting a mega-franchise in very loud and expensive fashion ... the fans take notice. And they're not afraid to call bullshit at the drop of a hat or a crack in the canon, which is part of what makes the new Star Trek such a pleasant surprise. Not only did they "pull it off," but they've done so in rather grand fashion: This is the best Trek since Khan got all wrathful and such.
It's an origin story, which is normally snooze central, but in this case ... well, do you actually KNOW how Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, etc., all met up at the start? I'd assume that only the hardest of hardcore fans know that stuff, and the "flashback" approach allows us to accept an all-new cast as a simple part of the equation. The story of young Kirk, who lost his father only one second after being born, turning away from a rebellious streak and enlisting in Starfleet, only to slowly acquire a rather eclectic crew of friends while battling a mercilessly evil villain ... yeah, this stuff is just plain old fun.
And what a entertaining film this will be for the movie geeks to dig through: Shot like a dream, cut real tight, scored with majesty and power, packed with dazzling sights and sounds and sly little pieces of banter. We've also got the requisite chase and escape stuff, a few nifty creatures, a sweet dash of romance, and even some time-travel twistiness that all but demands repeat viewings. Hell, you could know nothing about the words Star Trek and still find a lot to enjoy here.
Any of the old-school Star Trek fans can tell you: It's the cast that makes or breaks a series. And while it's way too early to tell if this new gang will make a fan-friendly impact, going only by one fine film, this ensemble is aces across the board. So while we don't have that friendly sort of familiarity that we normally have with Star Trek, it's replaced with the sensation of meeting interesting "new" characters who might be a little bit younger (and, yes, a lot prettier) but are still just as likable. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto excel as Kirk and Spock (respectively), but big chunks of the film are stolen by the likes of Uhura (Zoe Saldana), McCoy (Karl Urban), and good ol' Scotty (Simon Pegg). Compliments also to Eric Bana's brooding villainy, Bruce Greenwood's classy authority, and Ben Cross' overt Vulcanosity. (And was that ... Winona Ryder? Nah, couldn't be.) No, this is not the Enterprise crew we know and love, but I know enough to crave a few more adventures with the new guys.
As Star Trek is character(s) first and plot second, it's understood that we spend a lot of time getting reacquainted with everyone, but of course there's just enough of an adventure story to keep the flick cooking. Eric Bana stars as a horrific Romulan with a massive grudge, one who's not afraid to leap back in time to satisfy his lust for revenge. But the real arc of the flick is Jim Kirk, and his journey from Enterprise stowaway to captain. The screenwriters run through a whole lot of road-blocks and temporal contortions to give the Star Trek faithful a reboot to remember, and I'd say they've done one heck of a job.

Don't you mean the other way around? Quinto is Spock.

UM... No ! NO NO NO NO NO !!!
What?!?!?!?! I loved Quinto but Nimoy is Spock.... and always shall be!
Look at this:
http://www.amazon.com/I-Am-Spock-Leonard-Nimoy/dp/0786861827/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241789544&sr=8-3
When Quinto writes a book titled "I AM SPOCK" (as Nimoy has) then you can think about making this statement!

Oh, please. That's not even what I meant, and you know it. When this review was first posted, there was a sentence that said Kirk was played by Quinto and Spock was played by Pine. I was simply pointing out that the roles were actually the opposite. I said "Quinto is Spock," but I simply meant he plays him in the movie. Don't have a heart attack.

I just got home an hour ago from seeing the movie, and as a person who used to watch the original series all I can say is "freakin awesome!!!" The facial expressions the dialogue, especially the actor who played bones, it was dead on. Also, Kirk, Spock.,Scotty they captured the essence, the personalities of the original cast. To the new generation of movie goers who never watched the series, you might not get it . But for all us old Star Trek fans, let us hope that this is the new beginning for the continuing voyage of the star ship ENTERPRISE. "ANJARD OUT".

Just got back from this.
I was thoroughly impressed. The reboot was handled in a very Star Trek way and they spell it out for those who missed the idea.
Pine and Quinto I think nailed their characters and made the film really enjoyable to watch. My 9yo loved it and he's never seen a Star Trek show or movie in his life. He wants me to get all the shows and movies for him now.

loved it great from begining to end. Lots of action with a fantstic cast. I by the end I wasn't even thinking about the actors sense I have seen them in so many other things, but truly saw the charictors. And as far as I could tell only a couple. Breaks in cannon that weren't explained my the time travel. Great job.

I must be the only true Star Trek fan. This movie was horrendous! Absolutely horrendous! As were the "facts" in this review. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

False false false false false! It is not an origin story, a prequel, or anything that can possibly relate to Star Trek. It is the same characters in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STORY LINE! THEY SAY SO IN THE MOVIE! If this movie is to be taken as "canon" all of the future series and movies that exist, i.e. ALL OF THEM will not exist because they are following a new and horrible story line. Vulcan destroyed?! Spock and Uhura?! WTF JJ Abrams: Butcher of Star Trek.
The End

Get over yourself. It's a movie. Plus Nimoy/Spock clearly said the events that have just transpired will alter the timeline. Coolness.
"True" Star Trek fans like yourself killed the franchise and got Enterprise cancelled after only 4 seasons. The new film rocks and JJ gets props for doing a great job!

I just saw the movie with my wife and i can tell you we have two completely diffrent views of the movie. She loved it. I hated it. Now dont get me wrong the movie was perfectly for what it is. The characters were beyond phenomenal, the filmography was first rate, and so on and so on, but did anyone really get what actually happened to the star trek universe in this one movie? It was comepletely wiped out. Given a blank slate. And for that i call bullshit. Scott mentioned earlier about the fact that this is an origin story and that we might never have known how these characters met before. Has anyone not realized J.J. Abrams has completely rewrote star trek history and there is more than likely no way that these characters actually met this exact same way in the "other" timeline. If you dont believe me think about this line of the movie Kirk asked the future Spock if he knew his father and Spock replied about how he knew him and that he was alive for his taking command of the Enterprise. That line right there sums up the fact everything that once was is no longer. And why is this?? Can you think of a better way to recreate a classic series? Neither can i and i bet the producers of this movie are betting heavily on the fact that they can make even more money on new movies and tv series and for that i call bullshit because they just gave a big "fuck you" to every other series that came before this!!!

WhatTheF#$%, I absolutely agree with you. This movie doesn't tell us one thing about how the characters meet, because they didn't meet this way. This movie is set in a parallel universe. In and of itself, that's OK for a story, but ST has a long history of screwing up it's own canon, and after a while it gets annoying. Example: where's Finnegan? Example: why isn't Lt. Kirk teaching a class at the academy, sine he was called "a stack of books with legs"? Example: why isn't Kirk ever going to now fight the cloud-thing that drinks blood, since he's no longer going to be a midshipman on the Farragut? I'm not a Trek-obsessive, and I can remember this stuff, so why can't they? To me, when the ST writers screw up thier own canon, it just grabs me as lazy scriptwriting. If they tried they could have written a story that was just as entertaining, but also lined up with the story as it has already been told.

Here's the fun thing about scifi--you can interpret things as you will. It is possible that Nero's return to the past created a branching of the timeline. So that in one universe, we have the original events, and in the other, a whole new reality to explore. And no, Spock Prime would not necessarily know if that's what happened, so he might not mention the possibility. It's just for fun, so create a story that makes you happy. No problem.

Agreed. Giving Abrams (who doesn't care about the franchise) control of the reins for the movie is like giving your prize car to a demolition derby driver...don't expect to get it back in one piece.
This was a sci-fi adventure film, pure and simple. Lots of action, special effects, etc. so it satisfies those moviegoers who don't want anything more. For those who say there's a lot of depth, etc., I think our standards must be lowering pretty quickly. I didn't find much depth in the characters, and it's about how I would have THOUGHT Abrams would have done it. Kirk comes off pretty much as a punk frat boy rather than a dedicated cadet. And please...we must be deep in universes indeed to find one that puts 17-22 year olds in command positions on capital starships.
BTW, to an earlier post, there were 3, not 4, seasons, and it was 40+ years ago bubba so the original poster to whom you replied likely did NOT kill off the series. And the only way this movie would have been filmed is because of Trek fans like us. So why don't YOU get over yourself?
Let's see...Vulan is gone...Romulus is gone...all because Abrams couldn't think of anything more clever and less convoluted as a story line. The Enterprise is commanded by fresh boot cadets...sure.
Sometimes, Mr. Abrams, it takes more than a Transformers-type eye to make a good film. Hopefully next time somebody else gets a shot at holding the reins.

OK people listen up. This movie rocks! The one's that don't like it are simply crazy! I am a Trek fan from day one 1964. The series had to "begin" somehow and we never knew much if not anything of how the characters began. This movie was done right in every way. (And injected with a little 21st century ideas.) I could not believe how good this movie was. The theater was sold out in IMAX and everyone I spoke with after, absolutely loved it. No one had a bad opinion. I rest my case. We all stood in the parking lot and talked about it. All that was missing was Scotty's Romulan Ale. It was just good old fun! When was the last time you have seen a movie that was so much fun? I bet not in a long time. I can't wait for round 2.
Live long and prosper!!!

I loved it, too, and I am a Trekker! Scott was great. I can really see this turning into something more than just the socialism that STTNG turned into.

Bob, were you in a time machine or what? You must be a REAL fan, since the series didn't start until 1967. :)
