Martin Scorsese Directing Frank Sinatra Biopic
Filed under: Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, Newsstand

Over at Deadline Hollywood, Nikki Finke is reporting that Martin Scorsese will direct and produce a film about the life of famed singer Frank Sinatra for Universal, after the studio acquired the project from Mandalay Pictures and secured the hard-to-get blessing from the Sinatra family. Tina Sinatra will executive produce, along with Phil Alden Robinson (who's also writing the script) and Gary LeMel.
Right now there's no word on casting, though logically we all must turn to Scorsese's latest muse, Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio. One imagines his name will creep its way to the top of the list, though, in my opinion, DiCaprio looks a little too boy-ish to play Sinatra. Maybe he'd pass for really young Sinatra (especially the hair and the eyes), but even so I think it would take a little work to turn DiCaprio into a convincable Frank. It also depends on whether the actor playing Sinatra will perform Sinatra's songs, or if they'll simply lip-sync? That little factor could introduce a whole new crop of actors, some of which may be complete unknowns. Would Scorsese cast an unknown in the lead? Doubt it, but it'll be fun to watch this one come together assuming Finke's reportage is true.
Who do you think should play Frank Sinatra? Is DiCaprio our only solid option?
UPDATE: Variety has confirmed this to be true.

Harry Connick Jr. has the look and the voice. He's not a bad actor either.

That's interesting, considering that just a few years ago there was talk that Scorsese would be doing a Dean Martin biography... here's Army Archerd reporting in Variety in 1998:
GOOD MORNING: Martin Scorsese has placed his Dean Martin feature biopic "on the back burner." He wants to have a dream cast in his movie -- and that can't happen for a while. Tom Hanks is his choice to play Dean (there's nothing Hanks can't do!) in the script by Paul Schrader who, last year, told me the rest of the hoped-for cast would be John Travolta as Sinatra, Hugh Grant as Peter Lawford, Adam Sandler as Joey Bishop and Jim Carrey as Jerry Lewis. All of them are currently busy in projects taking them well into the year (and next). Instead of starting the Martin biopic, Scorsese will probably next direct "Bringing Out the Dead" starring Nicolas Cage.

DiCaprio the only solution? Mother of god! That would be comic. And tragic.

harry connick jr. is certainly the most logical option. he's got the voice, and if scorsese can't get the performance out of him, no one can. dicaprio is a hack, and i don't even want to go through the pain of hearing him try to sing. ugh!

I'd LOVE to see James Franco play a youthful Sinatra. I think he'd be brilliant. Although having already played James Dean on screen I don't see it happening.

Kevin Spacey? He may be a little bigger than Sinatra, but I bet he could pull it off.

Spacey was already Bobby Darin. I think Hugh Jackman is a shoe in. He can sing, he looks the part, and hes riding a huge wave of success. I'm callin it now.

The bigger question is who plays Ava Gardner. ;) She's way before my time but when I see pics of her in her heyday, all I can say is, WOW. My first instinct is Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. She already has the look and those sexy curves.

to the 7th commentor DANIEL. I totally agree! i can really see Franco steppin into the role, and raising his game to another level. Franco would be perfect and scorsese would make him shine all the way to the oscar podium!!! The fact that he played James Dean doesn't have a big affect on him getting this role in my opinion, that was a T.V movie and i really think a lot of people don't remember he played him. Man, now i can't wait for franco to take the role, and i think i would be pissed if he didn't get it,lol. NO TO DICAPRIO!!!! HES PLAYED OUT ALREADY,UGH!!!

Well naturally Harry Connick jr comes to mind, but Jon Cryer (from two and a half men) always reminds me of Sinatra looks wise, can he sing though?

wow, this is tough. i'd suppose there's a script in hand that makes it interesting to scorsese. this couldn't be one of those lifelong bios like 'ray'.
nobody can sing like sinatra except perhaps connick or michael buble, but neither has the actor chops.
it'd be more open to a lot of actors if they didn't have to stumble over the singing. can't even imagine how this gets done without an absolutely brilliant choice. also an absolutely brilliant performance couldn't hurt.
i'd think a relatively unknown (or completely unknown) actor
or a series of actors like the dylan thing. get kate blanchett to do one of them.

Here's a thought:
Vince Vaughn (with lip synched songs, of course)
How money would that be?

Mr. Scorsese:
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is your Sinatra. He's Sinatra in every way- young, fresh, scrappy- has the moves, has the eyes, the lanky build, has the attitude- and is a brilliant actor. A young scrappy Irishman playing a young scrappy Italian from New Jersey. And he's musical. You need a fresh face for this role.

i don't know if he has the acting and singing chops to do it, but Adrian Grenier face and body type resemble Frank, right down to the dark hair and blue eyes. Is thin like Frank too. Cut his hair, slick it back and put him in a suit...and voila!

First and foremost...unfortunately, Harry Connick or Michael Buble are not popular enough to have Sinatra or Scorsese fans to go see the movie...so they are not going to work.
I think they should get someone fresh and new..It worked in many instances and I trust Scorsese to find that right person...This really isn't going to be easy at all....by far the hardest I think...but I like that Vince Vaughn thing..lol (lose weight)

An actor. Hire an actor...and I think it best if he have BLUE EYES.
Evan Rachel Wood MUST play Mia Farrow...and I have no clue where they'll get an Ava Gardner.
