Could Johnny Depp Be Scorsese's Sinatra?
After yesterday's news that Martin Scorsese will direct a Frank Sinatra biopic, people are asking: Who will he cast in the lead? In fact, some people are even going the extra mile and asking: Whom will he cast in the lead? That's how important this is! The obvious answer is Leonardo DiCaprio -- not because he's particularly well-suited to the role, but because he's Scorsese's muse and good-luck charm, having appeared in the director's last four films (including Shutter Island, due out this fall). But Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily, citing her usual no-named sources, says the studio wants a different superstar: Johnny Depp.
My gut reaction to this is that it's typical studio knee-jerk casting: "Let's get the most famous, most popular actor in Hollywood! He's perfect for the part because he's the most famous and the most popular!" But I concede Depp looks enough like a young Sinatra that it wouldn't be completely ridiculous, and obviously he's a good actor. So maybe it could work. (That picture is him in Public Enemies. The hat and old-school suit definitely helps his Sinatraness.)
Depp can sing, as we learned in Sweeney Todd, though Finke says that doesn't matter, as Sinatra's own recordings will be used in the film. But that doesn't mean there won't be, say, scenes set in rehearsals, or other non-performance settings, where the actor (or a voice double) would need to sing a bit. Then again, singing is one thing -- singing like Frank Sinatra is something else. Can Depp do it? Can anyone do it?
For more, Moviefone has picked 10 actors as potential candidates for the role. Vote for your favorite right over here.
Some commenters yesterday suggested Harry Connick Jr., who looks a bit like Sinatra and has the voice down. He's not a bad actor, either, though I don't know about carrying an entire film. He certainly doesn't have the star power of a Depp (or even a DiCaprio), either, which is presumably what Universal wants.
What do you think? Could Johnny Depp do it? Or would it look like stunt casting? Who -- or whom, even -- would you cast?

They could use Brendan Perry (prev. of Dead Can Dance) as a voice double. It's ridiculous how much he sounds like Sinatra on certain songs. (And I'm not even a Sinatra fan.)

I really think Leonardo DiCaprio is the best choice for the role. Leo as Frank, George Clooney as Dean Martin.

I think Benjamin Clark should play Old Blue Eyes. Get a fresh face in there. He's a brilliant actor and perfect as far as look and singing ability goes.

Johnny Depp looks nothing like Sinatra. For one thing, he doesn't even have blue eyes. He might be able to sing, but word is that the voice will be Sinatra's. I know all you guys love to hate on DiCaprio, but he looks more like Sinatra than Depp -- and he's actually Italian.

I agree completely, what were you smoking when you said young Sinatra looks like Depp. No way. That casting is a tough one.

Mr. R, were you asking me what I was smoking? I didn't that Depp looked like the young Sinatra. In fact, if I had to pick between DiCaprio and Depp, I think DiCaprio looks more like Sinatra, at least when he was young. I actually don't think either of them look much like Sinatra but Depp doesn't even remotely look like Sinatra.
I like both DiCaprio and Depp as actors -- and I think DiCaprio takes a lot of sh** because of "Titanic -- but I can't even see Depp acting this part. He's more suited for the off-beat types, I think.

Wait! What did we learn in Sweeney Todd? Mr. Depp might be able to sing better than Helena Bonham Carter. But to say that he can sing is over stating the case.

Here is the thing. Ed Harris looks almost damn near Sinatra in his 50's and 60's. I like Leo in the role, however, and when I say this, I say it with the upmost respect for Leo. He can't carry a Sinatra movie. He isn't the right type. Too boyish, and almost too good looking. Johnny Depp could carry it off. Someone said "He doesn't even have blue eyes", and you don;t think they can't add contact lenses? I just think Johnny would be the better choice because I think he has a wider range of acting chops. Leo is good, but I think Johnny is better at adapting or morphing into who these people are. Just my 2 cents. I just hope they hold true to Sinatra because all those miniseries they did sucked ass, and the Rat Pack movie was ok, not that good. All though, I do remember hearing Tom Hanks was interested in playing Dean Martin. So we shall see.

Aidan Quinn all the way. Facially he is extremely close to Sinatra, and at his age, he could be made to look younger or older. He has a lot of acting experience too.
here's Frank,

I personally sent a letter to Marty Scorsese when I heard of the Sinatra film in the works and I suggested he cast Harry Connick Jr. who DOES have blue eyes and the looks plus he can act and sing- if the studio has the good sense to go that route. Harry may lack the obvious current Box Office of some of the other names bandied about but I predict the life and songs of Sinatra will ultimately draw people to the show. No to Michael Buble'.
