Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the WTF Trailer

You'll never hear me say a nasty thing about Robert Downey Jr., as I have a lot of respect for the man and a lot of appreciation for the films he's done ... but having said that, I cannot help but express the following opinion: The trailer for his new movie looks like, well, like no Sherlock Holmes story I've ever seen. Obviously one can never judge an unfinished film by the quality of its promotional materials, but if this clip is what we can expect from the whole of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, I'm ... well, I'm still interested. But now highly skeptical. And a little shocked.I guess my main question is this: If your goal is to make a Victorian-era action comedy, and that sounds good to me, why must it be called Sherlock Holmes? (I'd suggest Sherlock Holmes and the Deluge of Weird Changes.) I'll leave it to the experts to pick the specific nits, but I'm betting the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories didn't have quite so many gunfights, boxing matches, explosions, and crotch jokes. At this point the thing looks like Young Sherlock Holmes meets The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vs. Van Helsing: At World's End ... which, I'll admit, could still be a lot of fun.
Thoughts from the crowd? Am I being too rough on what's clearly a tongue-in-cheek mega-revision of the classic character? Aren't I the one who's always telling people to rent the Holmes farce Without a Clue? I guess I just wasn't expecting that many explosions is all. Indeed, Erik Davis has clued me in that, yes, Sherlock Holmes DID know how to brawl, and his point is backed up by Wikipedia. Still, is the flick even a mystery story?

See, I really like this trailer; it looks fun, exciting, colorful and doesn't take itself too seriously. Seems Ritchie nailed the right tone; hopefully his style doesn't get too much in the way -- but I absolutely LOVE the look of it. And yes, old school Holmes was a brawler, a lover, a fighter - a little bit of a nutcase. And so was Watson, the military man. Both guys know how to kick ass and take names later.
Good stuff.

I'm in no way a fan of Guy Ritchie's work, but it does look like Young Sherlock Holmes meets The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vs. Van Helsing: At World's End, which could indeed be very fun.
I didn't want to before, but now I think I might go see it.

Im with Erik on this one I think it looks great. I've never been a big fan of S.H. because my memories of earlier movies have all been of boring a man with a magnifying glass to the ground trying to solve a case. And The crotch joke was the best part RDJ is awesome! lol

This is the week after the new Star Trek was both a critical and box office success, and a year after Heath Ledger of all people turned in a great performance as The Joker.
Reinventions no longer scare me.

This isn't a standard Holmes film, but the tone of the trailer looks like it would fit in with the Seven Percent Solution, Murder by Decree or The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. I could easily see Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett doing this material.

I am very impressed and excited about the trailer!! It looks fantastic!!!! Some people just can't pull themselves out of the "old" representations of the past and enjoy the presence of the new! It looks like a great , fun and exciting ride. Only Robert Downey Jr. could pull off doing a new rendition of Sherlock Holmes and make it so enjoyable. I look forward to welcoming this new version and enjoying it!!!! Robert and Jude Law seem to act very well off of each other, and I love Irene Adler! Not every woman could knock Holmes to the floor ! I really loved that part! I think it's going to be fantastic!!!!!

What? I thought it looked fantastic! Odd, not traditional, way more action, lots of comedy....could it be that Richie is doing what Abrams just did and respecting the source material while upping the FUN?? "The key to my release is under this pillow...." lol

This looks like fun, like the spiritual successor of Young Sherlock Holmes, a movie I enjoy a great deal.
Gotta concur with some of the other comments, who cares if it doesn't look like classic Holmes, as if there aren't dozens of Holmes movies already. I just want a good, entertaining movie. This definitely looks like at least one of those.

The original Holmes wasn't a lover at all. He was rather cold and removed (and a bit of a druggie).
Still, I like the the trailer enough and I'm happy that Guy Ritchie is sticking to his wheelhouse rather than trying to branch out ala Revolver or Swept Away.
I'm a bit nervous that the action will take away from the Whodunnit angle but I'm still looking forward to the movie (and expecting nothing more than a standard Guy Ritchie film, just in a different time period)

i'm scared that too much of guy ritchie will go into this movie. the pause and dialogue thing grew old after lock, stock and snatch. however, if anyone can pull off the tone they seem to be going for, it's robert downey jr.
btw, i'm assuming they didn't include anything about the whodunnit part in the trailer to save it for the movie. which i'm glad they did, as that's how a real mystery trailer should be.

Could fit within the growing pantheon of excellent trailers that fail to do live up to promise when expanded into movies. Ritchie bless him is a derivative one trick pony, who has made some stinkers in his career. There is however the possibility that now he is away from Madge - the curse of Madge- will no longer blight him an this - although I say this with gritted teeth- might be passable. If not historically ridiculous!!! Good for all you Americans without passports though who think Britain is a stuffy Victorian playpark full of pea soup fog and butlers!!

I thought I recognized that name, so I went back and looked at your past posts. Good to know we can always rely on you for a random, unnecessary "America is full of insulated uneducated fools" comments. Not really sure where you got that us Americans assume britain is still full of carriages and top hats, but if you want to stereotype all of america because you believe that it stereotypes all of the UK then knock yourself out. Seems somewhat hypocritical and more than a little bit ridiculous, but hey, whatever makes you smile pal.
