'MacGruber' May Be Next SNL Film

The season might be over after Will Ferrell wrapped it up in a nice bow, but the Saturday Night Live train keeps truckin'. When the George Foster Peabody Awards were held the other day in New York City, it became an SNL news releasing zone. Besides talking about their hunt for new writers and stars, Lorne Michaels talked about movies. Specifically, he told The Hollywood Reporter that a big feature film for MacGruber is being considered, and that "it would have to be in the summer because we are back in production in the fall." Not this summer, I'd imagine, since they're "still in discussions."
Hello timely spoofs and product placement! You might remember that New Line started the quest for a new MacGyver back in March, so naturally it'd make sense to match that with Will Forte's MacGyver spoof. And oh, the product placement that's possible! If you Google "MacGruber," you'll be greeted by a sea of blog posts and clips of the SNL/Pepsi commercials where the hero hands in his mixed drink for an obsession with Pepsi products.
But could this be anything other than a short skit stretched way too long? The skits are a silly laugh, but I fear a feature might send it into eye-rolling Rob Schneider territory.
Are you primed for an hour and a half of supreme MacGruber action?

Don't you mean the Saturday Night Live Train Wreck?

The best thing about the MacGruber skits are that they are about 30 seconds long. A quick joke, then everything blows up. I cannot imagine how they could possibly make a movie out of this character.

MacGruber isn't funny when it is short skits... why would it be funny if it were an hour and a half?

I rush to hit the mute button whenever MacGruber comes on. It's a tired gag that -- like much of Saturday Night Live's recurring characters -- gets old fast. The only thing that would make this idea less appealing would be to pair it with Kristen Wiig's Gilly character. Egad! Try something fresh already!

Definitely agree that the length of the MacGruber skits is one of the elements that makes it funny. To make a movie out of this, they would have to really expand upon this one-dimensional character. But I am not a SNL hater like a lot of people. It has its ups and downs.

It's a one joke sketch. Let's not make another one joke movie. The backstory and plot is always so forced and so stupid with most of those SNL flicks.
Plus, Will Forte isn't very funny.

An unfunny short sketch turned into an unfunny feature-length movie? I think not.
Maybe Lorne was being funny.
That said, while Will Forte isn't very funny, if you imagine him as clone Abraham Lincoln, he becomes far more amusing.

If anyone's gonna do it, it better be The Lonely Island guys who co-write/direct the sketches. It'd at least guarantee some weird laughs, just like Hot Rod.

Because all of the previous SNL films based on one-note skits and characters have done SO well! They should have stopped at Blues Brothers and left well enough alone.

They absolutely have to make this movie. The movie will suck, but the fact that anyone decided to make it will be the funniest thing that's happened in a year of Sundays.

I like Will Forte so I'd hate for this to be a vehicle that would expose him to a wider audience. I think he's capable of much better material.
