Terminator Salvation ... On A Scale of 1-10?

This was a tough weekend to pick a film for our 1-10 Poll, but since Terminator Salvation seems to be the fan favorite (and the only movie opening up early, as in last night at midnight), we'll go with that. I'm sure you pretty much know the deal by now with our 1-10 polls; essentially, we're asking you to rate all of the big summer movies on a scale of 1-10 so that we can see what you think of them, as well as determine which film moviegoers enjoyed the most (and the least) this summer. So far Star Trek is in the lead ... will Terminator beat it?
From my Terminator Salvation review: "Terminator Salvation roars to life on screen with enough gutsy firepower to literally shake you in your seat. She's a mean, loud metallic beast that hasn't eaten in years, and the only commands she understands come in the form of growls, snarls, bullets and explosions. You can't really ask for more from an action picture (well you can, but we'll get to that); with Terminator Salvation, director McG proves that he's more than a punchline for online jokes -- his action scenes are fierce and eye-popping; he gives us the post-apocalyptic Skynet world we've always wanted to see and then asks if we want seconds or thirds. This is the Terminator film for a generation that expects over-the-top; an audience who likes it rough, but still PG-13, so we don't get carded at the door."
Sound off below ...

great action...pointless movie. I really could have done without this one. The whole fun of Terminator was the going back in time and seeing them interact with people who had no real idea about the future of Skynet. This was just explosions with a bunch of mumbo jumbo thrown in.

A handsomely produced movie, no doubt, but...
I can't remember the last time I went to see a movie theatrically and was so completely uninvolved in the movie. I had no idea a movie with so much action could be so dull. It was just 'stuff' happening, and I can't say that I was interested one bit in what it was. The only remotely likable character who was the most human, other than Anton Yelchin's, was the one who was a damn robot!
I actually yearn for "talk to the hand" after this movie. What a disappointment.

That's exactly it. I was rather looking forward to this movie. I love Christian Bale and I love the other Terminator movies, but man. I will never see another movie directed by McG ever again. It was just pointless explosions (and 2 helicopter crashes with the same character, really!?) I only read film reviews after I've seen the movie to see if anyone out there agreed with what I felt and articulated it better than I did. Last night I read Harry Knowles' review and while super harsh, I think it was spot on. The film had zero soul and nothing to connect you to any of the characters and some of the acting was SUPER BAD.
I wish i could go back in time and funnel the millions and millions spent on this film into T:TSCC instead.
I, too, am actively discouraging people from seeing this and pushing them to spend their holiday movie money on Star Trek.

The whole point of this movie is to introduce us to the world we had heard so much about in the previous Terminator movies. Well, we saw it and that was it. It pretty much was just setting up the sequels by introducing the characters. Still, it will probably be confusing for people who have not seen the other movies. Good cast - I like the guy (kid) that plays John Conner's dad (he's also in Star Trek). I gave it a "7" and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Just bad. Some of the action was good and the cinematography was nice but it was dull and almost laughably bad if only it hadn't taken itself so seriously. Ridiculously cliched at parts, nonsensical in others, I'd say skip this movie. If you want action, rent "Taken". If you want a good movie, see "Brothers Bloom".

The only lasting impression the movie left me with:
The TV series was the swan song of this franchise. Story-wise, even the weakest episode was more interesting than this heap of CG crap.
Warner people are idiots for dumping the show as well as for trusting a director who not only lacks vision but can't even frame a coherent thought in interviews.
Only in Hollywood.
I'm actively discouraging people from seeing the movie.
Warner Bros, I hope you rot.

Very dissappointing indeed...I have to agree with most of the reviews from above. It was like watching a video game. The character development was bare minimal or none, John Connor's character was contrived and angry (good sign of global resistance leadership!), and there was absolutely no bulid-up in any of the three acts! Just action, blah, action, blah, blah, action, action, blah, blah, naked digital Arnold, blah......
The first film still destroys the rest. Cameron please come back! Get rid of these crappy MTV directors!

Just due to the fact that they canned the excellent TV series, and this looks weak, makes me not want to bother seeing it.
What a waste.

Yeah, the movie had it's problems, to be sure, and it was not as great as it should have been, but screw it, I still liked it and I'd see it again. I am hoping the director's cut on DVD will put back in a lot that was obviously cut, and I think we'll see a better movie.

How does I guy like McG even get to direct a film this big?
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was a horrible film. McG should be working at McDonald's not directing films. So he directed some Music videos and the "Chuck" pilot, big deal! McG basically bullshitted his way into this project. McG reminds of Renny Harlin another one hit wonder. He strikes gold with Die Hard 2 (Which wasn't very good compared to the first one) and than delivers a whole slough of stinkers. Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island, Deep Blue Sea, Mindhunters to name a few. It baffles me how guys like this continue to work in the entertainment industry. They're B-Movie Directors with mega-budgets. Michael Bay is another one of these hacks.
He couldn't tell a good story if his life depended on it. Directors like these are not innovators. They are not artists and do not understand basic character and plot development. They mass -market commercial garbage to young impatient audiences looking for a quick fix. The quality just isn't there as these types of films tend to lack substance, soul and are disposable.
What was once "spun sugar" of the elite is now nothing more than "cotton candy" for the mindless masses. "There's an ass for every seat" and guys like McG, Renny Harlin and Michael Bay know this. You're better off downloading the T4 video game if you're seeking retribution. It's probably the only satisfaction that you're going to get after kissing ten bucks goodbye.

The action was decent and the visuals were very good. There were a few of those surprise moments where people were snatched by large terminators or a terminator came out of nowhere, but the movie definitely lacked a compelling plot, a human element and some sort of interesting theme.
Christian Bale (who I thought was overrated in The Dark Knight) was pretty horrible in this movie. The character gave the viewer no reason to root for him. Only the Kyle Reese character was particularly compelling. The Sam Worthington character was only mildly interesting. Overall, the plot and the human aspect was kind of a mess.
If the next one continues the downward trajectory, I will root for the terminators.

The writing was so laugh-out-loud awful that the whole audience was, well, laughing out loud. The acting was horrendous, and the direction, well, maybe "McG" should stick to simpler themes. It was like the matrix done by the WB.
what a waste of time and money. no wonder christian bale freaked out on set.

In general, I loved the new film. True it has it's weaknesses. Most notably is that John Connor didn't get enough time to shine. He kind of got a little too lost in Marcus's shadow. If you really think about the main plot it's always been Connor's destiny to fight Skynet. Marcus's story searching for Salvation was really more of the sub plot in the grand scheme of things. So it's an odd choice narratively to make the sub plot the focus of the movie and the main plot second to that. I really did like Marcus and I thought Worthington did a great job but I think if they gave just a little more of the screen time to Connor then it could have made his character more dimensional. Like if we got to see a scene where he talks about his wife pregnancy with her and his fears of bringing a child into this world. I think it's odd that we can clearly see that she is pregnant yet they never bring it up in the movie at all. You think that would be a great motivator for John. People can't relate to a guy whose destined to fight machines in the future but everyone can relate to a man fighting to protect his family and to ensure their future.
A lot of critics say that Connor felt flat and that is why. It's not Bale's fault. He did the very best with what they gave him. The problem is that they didn't give him enough. Certainly not in the first half of the movie. If they make a sequel, which I really hope that they do, they should make sure the focus is where it should be. The focus should be on John and Kyle and their relationship. Marcus, if he returns, should serve a similar role that Han Solo did in Star Wars. He is the cool character that everyone likes but, like the Skywalker's, John and Kyle need to be the main story. I can't wait to see the scene when John has to send Kyle back in time to protect his mother. That's going to be some dramatic stuff. John wanting to tell Kyle that he's his father but not being able to. The knowledge that he is basically sending Kyle to his death. That's going to be a big moment.
The action was exciting. The visuals eye popping. The acting respectable for a film like this. The story solid for the most part. It has some great moments for the fans. Things that were hinted at or talked about in previous films are finally paid off here. Everything from Kyle Reese's origins to the birth of the T800 to John's rise to power. I'm both an avid fan of the cinema and the Terminator series and on both levels the film works. I definitely recommend that anyone who is unsure because of some bad reviews to go out and take a chance. As you can see, apparently a lot of people are enjoying the movie. I think it's the best thing out this summer so far.
