Monday Night Poll: What Did You Watch?
Filed under: Fandom, Summer Movies, Polls
We're four weeks into 2009's summer movie season. X-Men Origins: Wolverine got things off to a soggy start and was eclipsed by Star Trek as a popular favorite. Not many were impressed by Angels & Demons (though it did big business overseas), leading into this long weekend with Terminator Salvation and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian doing battle (and a little Dance Flick on the side).
So what are your general impressions so far? I was disappointed by Wolverine and loved Star Trek. My ambitious weekend viewing plans began with a viewing of Terminator Salvation, which satisfied the 12-year-old boy in me, but left the adult me sorely hungry for more substantial entertainment. So I watched two DVDs that came out last Tuesday. Fritz Lang's Man Hunt (1941) stars Walter Pidgeon as a British big game hunter whose "sporting stalk" of Hitler ends up with the hunter becoming the hunted. Lang is an elegant, efficient storyteller; Man Hunt is intelligent and thoughtful. Peter Yates' The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) features Robert Mitchum (pictured) as the weary, wary "Eddie Fingers," a loyal, long-term, low-level Boston hood. Really, though, the story revolves around his "friends" -- criminal colleagues and law enforcement officers, people who don't really care about Eddie. Even with bank robberies and intense stake-outs and stand-offs, the real impact comes from the characters and what happens to them.
What did you watch over the Memorial Day weekend? Feel free to elaborate in the comments section.

Saw two movies not listed here. Happy Go Lucky on DVD -- didn't really like it. The main character, Poppy, was just plain annoying. Then we saw Brothers Bloom at the theater and loved it.

I watched Valkyrie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Shotgun Stories. You know, because they just go together.

Besides Terminator Salvation I caught up on two excellent movies on DVD/NFLX - Memories of Murder, a South Korean Grand Bell Award winner (2003) and The Twilight Samurai (Japanese, 2002).

Good poll! Yeah, checked out Terminator Salvation, and I thought it was great! What was even better, the girlfriend actually WANTED to see it, and after it was done, she told me she LOVED it, and then was asking me all these backstory questions. So we immediately went to Blockbuster and watched the first one. Pretty cool, considering the last time I brought her to a "guy" flick, she walked out of Watchmen. Also rented Jabberwocky and Time Bandits cuz I randomly got a Terry Gilliam fix!

I caught Terminator on Wednesday night, Night at The Museum on Friday, and just watched Bad Boys II tonight. Interesting weekend, though I have to see both Terminator and Museum left me a little disappointed. Star Trek is still the movie to beat, for me.

I wanted to see Terminator or Wolverine but instead chose to stay home with a bunch of friends to watch Teen Wolf. Something tells me that I made the right choice.

Twilight on Thurs/Fri: Again, okay, thankfully not as 'Buffy' as I was expecting.
Star Trek on Sat: Excellent film (haha @ the fanboys).
The Pursuit of Happyness on Sat: Good, not great.
