'Tomb Raider' Reboot Will Be a Prequel
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, Scripts, Games and Game Movies
You know, I always thought that Lara Croft got a bum-rap on the big screen. When she should have been the love child of James Bond and Indiana Jones, what we ended up with was a bored Angelina Jolie pouting her way through half-baked plots. Now, we already knew that a 'reboot' was in the works, but it looks like there are going to be a lot of changes in store for Ms. Croft. During a press event for Terminator Salvation, producer Dan Lin spilled the beans that the Tomb Raider reboot will in fact, be a prequel. Lin told journalists, "... - it's a great origin story that we're going to tell. A very character-oriented I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies." According to Lin, casting for the role has yet to begin (now that Megan Fox is out of the running), but they are definitely looking for someone a little younger this time around. Whether the choice for a younger Croft is to capitalize on multiple flicks, or just to pander to the mall crowd, I couldn't say. But what I do know is that I think an adult Lara Croft is a much more exciting proposition than a precocious teen with a Nancy Drew complex -- and isn't it about time that we got some fully grown ladies fighting the good fight on the big screen again, anyway?
The project is still in the early stages of development, but Lin has warned fans that we might be getting a less 'active' Croft this time around, saying, "I would say it's like Terminator - character-driven action. I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character." Now I might have only played a few of the Raider games, but seriously? When were those things about characters?
Tell us what you think about a young Lara Croft, and who you would like to see take over where Jolie left off.

I don't know. Character driven is allright, but Tomb Raider may work best as over the top and adventurey .

Given the quality of the 'majority' of mainstream consumer entertainment and the hundreds of billions of dollars it rakes in annually, carg0, seems like your description is a profile of global consumers, not just the Tomb Raider bunch.

Now that Eidos has been taken over by Squaresoft, shouldn't they wait to make a movie until after Square turns her into an anime character, complete with bigger more expressive eyes, larger revealing breasts and flashier clothes?

Rhona Mitra is the only British chick I know of that is Lara Croftish. One thing that bothered me was Jolie's accent -- there are probably plenty of gorgeous brunettes in the UK. Right?

How many times will I have to say this: Summer Glau, Summer Glau, Summer Glau, Summer Glau, Summer Glau, Summer Glau,Summer Glau... I'm getting tired of saying it, but you get the idea. Let's hope Dan Lin does.

Those guys should surely talk to Amanda Righetti from "The Mentalist". She has the perfect Lara Croft look and the right age as well. Actually, when playing Underworld for Xbox 360 I was impressed by how much they look alike.
I trust this so much that I may actually try to find Dan Lin and tell him that. lol

Jolie was the obvious choice, but not the best. I will be sad if Megan Fox gets the part, she belongs in the porno version of Tomb Raider. Watch them pick Emma Watson haha.

Didn't care much for the 1st movie, but hoped 2nd would be better--it was, barely. I've always thought of Lara as a female kind of Indiana Jones. The problem with someone talking about character development is: how much character development does Idiana Jones have in the 1st movie? And he was an unknown character when the movie was released. As to finding someone to replace Jolie, glad to hear it. But why go for a known actress to replace her? Why not someone who looks like Lara to begin with? I hear people complaining unknowns don't bring in the crowds to the movies. Anyone hear of a movie called Star Wars with only 1 really well known actor named Alec Guiness in it? I don't watch movies just because someone's in it. It may get my interest, but that's all. If the story/script is good, I go see it. Then buy the dvd if it's really good. I've checked the internet for Lara look a likes and found only 1 so far that really looks like her in her 20's. I'd also like Eidos to do a animation movie on Lara, preferably by the same company which did the movie Appleseed.
Maybe Eidos could give Disney/Pixar a run for their money as they show computer generated movies all the time in the theaters. And the Appleseed animation is the best I've seen.

There is no way that they can replace Angelina Jolie!!! She has always been tomb raider and changing the character would change the entire image of how we see Lara Croft. And the problem with changing the character would be that people would get confused and think of the wrong person when they talk about tomb raider. Also, the action in the movies can't be removed!! That is what tomb raider is all about and what she is!!! Tomb raiders purpose is to be adventurous, they never focused on character in Indiana Jones! That would be boring!!! I'm a tennager and we don't go to the movie theatre looking for movies that talk about CHARACTER!!!!!!!!! We look for excitment and adventure. This prequel would go against all that tomb raider stands for!! Angelina Jolie must come back, and there needs to be ALOTTTTTTTTTTTTT of action!!!!!!!! And if there isn't I'm one fan who will not go to see that movie. And many others also. Don't change tomb raider, people don't like change especially in movies. Especially main character changes. So please please don't change Jolie and keep the action!!!!!!!!!

i would not like the younger version. and the fans who have been playing tha games for years dont wanna see a "less active" lara croft no way. nd someone mentioned rhona mitra which i agree she is deffinitly croft material. She is beautiful in tha face and big in tha chest. she was excelent in underworld i think she would do good in tomb raider. but i think it would be rediculis ta make it less active tht is juss plain stupid..yea tha game is full of action and lara bein active but there is always an awsome plot like legend we found out wut happened ta laras mother and thts tha kinda stuff we need ta kno bout but with just as much action and "activness"
