The Porn Star Who Loved Art Flicks
Filed under: Fandom, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips
I catch The Rotten Tomatoes Show pretty much every week, especially now that co-host Ellen Fox and I are officially engaged (but don't tell her; it's a surprise), and I'm always on the lookout for the best clips to share with you guys. Recently The RT Show had actress / cyber-smut starlet / attractive female Sasha Grey pop up to share her top five films, what with her 'legit' debut just hitting the scene recently. (It's Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience, and I'm still looking forward to checking it out.)So I'm guessing the producers of The RT Show were expecting a fairly standard list of favorite flicks from Ms. Grey. Maybe something like Pretty Woman or The Sixth Sense or (aha) Boogie Nights ... but Sasha is clearly a very discerning gal, and it sure seems like her tastes run towards the indie, the foreign, and the artsy. I won't ruin the surprises, but embedded below is a porn star who not only adores Cassavetes, Breillat, and Herzog, but she speaks about them well enough to prove she's not faking it! (I hate porn stars who fake it.) And then, just to add a little tweak to the list, her #1 pick is so cool, it made me want to ... give Sasha Grey a nice big kiss. On the cheek. Her face's cheek. Honest.
I of course mean no offense by the terms "porn star," "cyber-smut starlet," and "marionette of carnality," and am frankly impressed with how smart and cool Ms. Grey has come off in interviews. Plus, speaking as a film critic, there's little denying that the gal has true screen presence, whether she's clothed, naked, talking, or ... yelling.

This woman might be one of the most interesting living people. She seems to "get" life. Beautiful human being.

Wow yeah...she's very interesting.
It's not a list that says 'hey, I'm smart damn it'. In fact, those lists on RT are usually exactly what you'd expect.
She's got interesting stuff on the list, backs up why they interest her, then pulls out a pulp classic. Wow.
I am officially in camp Sasha Grey.

Well at least they're not proper arty like Last Year at Marienbad or anything pretentious and crap like that.

She used "escapism" to describe that one movie, but I think she meant it as "the characters in this movie escape" and not "a way to forget the troubles in one's life through entertainment". Aren't ALL movies considered escapist?
I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced that she's either down to Earth or complex simply because she watches foreign films or pulp action-flicks. I think it's all just wishful-thinking on the part of those that like to watch her work.

Yes all films are an escape, in fact after a hard day at work I love to jump on the couch and unwind by watching a little Schindler's List.

all films are definitely NOT considered escapist entertainment. Not sure why on earth you'd think that.
