Is Fox Rebooting 'Alien' Next?

In Hollywood, no one can hear you think. With a remake / reboot of Predator on its way, 20th Century Fox may now be setting its sights on Alien. (That "popping" sound you just heard emanates from the burst blood vessels of a million fans.) An anonymous source told Bloody Disgusting that Fox is developing a remake of Ridley Scott's 1979 classic. Another source says that the studio "is possibly working on an origins story, as opposed to a straight-up remake."
Considering how both the Alien and Predator franchises have been devalued, thanks to the low quality of AVP: Alien vs. Predator and AVP: Requiem, as well as Fox's recent, poor track record with action movies, my expectations are below zero. With Robert Rodriguez on board as producer and a July 2010 release date set, a new Predator is coming whether we want it or not. As a strictly business decision, it makes sense for Fox to keep remaking, rebooting, and making sequels to properties they own. As a huge fan of Alien, I just sigh. The picture, by the way, is from the Polish poster for the original.
For what it's worth, BD's tipster claims that Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, and Michael Costigan are on board for the next movie in the Alien series, and that Carl Rinsch has been hired to direct. (Here are four commercials he did for a car company.) Rinsch has worked for the Scotts since 2000. (Here's an article about how he originally got hired by the company.) Keep in mind that these rumors haven't been confirmed by the principals. Feel free to express your disgust and / or delight in the comments. In the meantime, enjoy once again the terrific original Alien trailer, as presented by our own Scott Weinberg.

For fucks sake, it does not need to be rebooted, how about stop making shitty alien movies. No more lame Alien Vs Predator BS. Get a good director who knows how to tell a compelling story and not someone who will just make it look pretty. (McG)

My question is, why even bother with a remake/reboot? Not just with Alien, but with a lot of these movies being made these days. If you want to call it a sequel just to make money off the brand, I get that. But if you're going to start from scratch, why not just establish a new property? Especially with some titles where there is no value in the name recognition. Would the "Day the Earth Stood Still" remake have made less money if it were called something else? Because it certainly didn't have a ton in common with the original, and I doubt fans of the original are going to camp outside the theater for the remake. In fact, the name probably kept a lot of moviegoers away because they're tired of the bastardization and cannibalism of Hollywood and didn't want to see Keanu Reeves ruin something they loved.
Make new shit. Even if you're rehashing old shit, just call it new shit. Instead of being the guy who made "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Original: The Beginning: For Realsies," slap some different wacky mask and nifty weapon on him and become the "creator" of something new that you can become known for. Maybe take that James Bond script you wrote, tweak it a little, hip it up and create Jason Bourne. Then you've got your own legacy instead of one chapter of a decaying one.
Sorry for the rant, but this one touched a nerve.

This is really getting to be some bullshit. It was bad enough when they started fucking with everything under the sun and getting the itch like a fiend to make a reboot/origin story, but now we're going to start messing with certified classics? Fuck that. I would go on, but since John above me already hit all the right notes, I'll just write a major CO-SIGN!

Nothing they could ever do would ever top the original. This really irks me.
I wish I could get ahold of the possible director/producer, grab them, shake them and yell "leave my shit alone/"

Sorry, but after Star Trek, pretty much everything is fair game. I hate the idea of ramakes/reboots (Star Trek included), but since ST made a ton of cash you better believe that everyone is going to try to do this.
This is similar to when George Lucas started cashing in on the SW prequels, suddenly everyone had to make a prequel. It's lame, but after remakes of Star Trek, Nightmare on Elm Street, and other iconic series, there is no reason why Alien should not receive the same treatment.

Call it Space Jockey and make a movie about the derelict ship that sent out the original distress/warning beacon. On second thought, nah, Alien does not need to be fucked with.

I'm going to break with the crowd and say: Go ahead and reboot it. Yes, Alien was a masterful suspense movie with shocking gore. And yes, Aliens was the rare sequel that is (almost?) the equal of the original. And all the other Alien movies are crap......but here's the thing: None of the Alien movies ever explained where the derelect ship came from, or why another alien species would be transporting these perverse killing creatures. Also never explained: Exactly when did the company that directed the Nostromo to "investigate" really encounter the creatures? I'd like to know. And I seriously wouldn't mind if they cast a young actress to play a younger version of Ripley if they can just make a good movie. There's a lot of cool stuff that can be done if they would just forget the Alien vs. Predator stuff and delved into the Alien mythology.

The first two Alien movies are great. Everything after that has been a poor excuse and does not do justice to the original. The last Alien movie plot could of been good if they didnt try to incorparate punch lines and other silly stuff. If they did another Alien movie it shouldnt be a remake and it needs to stay serious and true to the plot of the first two.
