'Drag Me to Hell' ... On A Scale of 1-10?
Filed under: Horror, Fandom, Summer Movies, Polls

Honestly, if we left the horror film off our 1-10 poll list this weekend, I would've heard complaints from the entire Cinematical staff -- most of whom were just smitten with Sam Raimi's latest creeptacular. Which is why we had to include it, along with Up, even though the latter will probably do better at the box office this weekend. Hopefully Raimi can take all the great buzz from this film and inject it into the next Spider-Man installment. Guess we'll see ...
From Peter's review: "Raimi has made a joyful romp through his personal horror playground and come up with a very entertaining horror-comedy that gets back to the basics. By that I mean creepy shadows on the wall and things that go bump in the night: all the odd, unexplained sights and sounds that keep anxious children awake at night, hiding under the covers. Any inkling that Raimi's soul might have been irretrievably chewed up by the Hollywood studio machinery -- a well-founded concern after the disappointing Spider-Man 3 -- quickly evaporates once the story gets underway."
Let us know how Drag Me to Hell ranks among the summer elite in the comments section and by voting in the poll below.

Once again, I'd like to request two small changes.
1) Add a poll option for "I just want to see the results".
2) Post the poll on Sunday after people have had the chance to go out and see it.

The poll goes up as soon as the movie opens so that all of us fanboys can see the very first opinions as soon as the first showing ends. They keep the poll going all weekend so you can track the numbers as more and more people check out the movie. I like the way these polls are used on cinematical.com.

All the more reason the poll should be held back until Sunday or Monday. Fanboy opinions skewing the numbers aren't going to help the general public.

@Wayne
I usually just press vote without selecting any thing and shows the results. But I agree with you.

Didn't know that worked. I'll have to try it. That would negate my first point.
I'd still rather the see the polls Sunday or Monday, though. Who wants to wade through the site to find them at the end of the weekend?

@Wayne... I don't visit as often as I used to, but yeah, having a poll about how good a movie was the DAY it comes out is ridiculous. It's like saying, "Did you like 'The Dark Knight'?" at 12:01 AM, the day it was released.
Polls, reviews, ratings, they're all skewed to the psychotic, and those who haven't seen the movie, but want to vote on whether or not they like Sam Raimi or Justin Long.
I voted 10 by the way... despite having to change seats twice (Nearly 3 times... I could not get away from talkative morons).

If Raimi never did another Spiderman flick, and churned out a couple more horror flicks with this kind of quality, I would forgive the man for all eternity for the misgivings that were S3, but as it is, I'm pretty close. This was an AWESOME movie. It was fun, genuinely scary, well written, and it kept me tense throughout the whole thing. Aside from all of the gag-reflex moments (which were both hilarious and disgusting) the best part is that he doesn't rely on heaps of gore or CGI, or a masked killer whose seemingly invinicble--not to diss other movies, but this is refreshing! To have a movie that relies on shadows, and sounds, he really took it back. It captured the spirit of Evil Dead, all while having legs of its own. The first really good horror movie I saw (in theatres) since The Mist.
Mind you, I still need to catch Let The Right One In.

"Let the Right One In" is good, really good, but not life changing as you may have been lead to believe.
I agree with the tenseness the viewer feels watching DMTH... the way he uses jump scares really cracked me up - it was obvious he was pointing out a cliche in horror movies that has thankfully slowed down a bit in recent years.
Side note... what popped into my head during the scene in the car was the movie "Flight of the Living Dead", and underrated gem where a certain zombified old lady "gums" a man. I laughed hard watching both movies, and the scenes are very, very similar.

This Sam Raimi supernatural horror film is exactly what the genre needs right now. Drag Me To Hell revives all of the typical horror techniques by using them at the right times and in the right proportion. You've got the startling moments, the wonderfully disgusting gross-out moments, the creepy sounds, the dark shadows, the odd camera angles, the fear of the supernatural all created with an expert hand. All of it was done to perfection. Nobody uses sound and editing in horror films as well as Raimi and I think these techniques were every bit the star of the picture along with a great performance by brave little Allison Lohman who proved that she can dig a grave faster than anybody. What a fun movie to watch. I dare you to see it and not jump out of your seat at least a dozen times.

Loved it. The perfect combination of the supernatural and the visceral, as only Raimi can do. Scary but also funny, as Raimi does best. I liked his use of quiet/LOUD/quiet pattern, but whereas most horror films just throw in a few of those LOUD moments to make you jump out of your seat, Drag Me to Hell seems to actually move in a constant rhythm of quiet/LOUD/quiet/LOUD/quiet/LOUD, which over the course of an entire film is much more unsettling than just a few token BOO! moments. Great old style scares.

One of the best horror movies Ive seen ever. Thrills, screams, suspense, gore, comedy and all the essentials that makes a great horror flick. The theatre was jam-packed and everyone jumped out of their seats at least 10 times---some of the loudest screams Ive ever heard. Definitely a movie that I could never watch alone ever. This movie has the perfect blend of horror ingredients to satisfy the taste of all seeks to devour.
