'Up' ... On A Scale of 1-10?
Filed under: Animation, Comedy, New Releases, Fandom, Summer Movies, Polls

It was tough to choose one film to highlight for our 1-10 poll this weekend since both Up and Drag Me to Hell are worthy of your opinion and your hard-earned dollars. So, with that in mind, we'll be doing two 1-10 polls tonight: One for Up and one for Drag Me to Hell. First, um, up, is the annual Pixar flick ... and, like Pixar movies in the past, this one is quickly shaping up to be one of the best reviewed films of the year. But does that mean you folks at home will like it more than, say, Star Trek, which is currently leading the summer 1-10 poll pack?
From Jette's review: "Is Up a children's film with side jokes for adults, a family film, or a film that's made for grownups but has many elements that children also can enjoy? At times it seems to fit in any of these categories as well as others -- it would be a great date film -- but ultimately it boils down to being a very good movie that defies demographic categorization. In other words, if you're old enough to sit quietly through a feature film, go see it. (And bring tissues.)"
Now tell us what you think in the comments section and by voting in the poll below.

I just went & saw the movie Up. I really liked it. It was funny. It had great characters, ie. Dug (new favorite animated character) & Alpha (love his first voice). It was touching. I liked it better than Wall-E. Wall-E was cute. Love story, but this was just a good story. I think one of the best Pixar films to date.

Just a side comment to the one I had at the beginning. I only wished I saw this in 3D. The movie was awesome. I think it would have been even better in 3D. At least in some parts.

Up is an adult film, that was then animated and given cute characters. The kids in the audience around me were restless halfway through. The back bone of the film is sentimentality, something I think kids just haven't lived enough to comprehend (I'm childless, so I could be wrong).
I think it is Pixar's best film to date. The scenery is gorgeous, the story sharp, funny and *real* (even in this complete fantasy world they've constructed). I had no interest in seeing this, and went solely on the great reviews the film was receiving. I am not regreting it.

an adult film? you're kidding right?
the first, i dont know, 5 minutes was a grown up film.
the other 90? not so much.
i'll let the balloon on the house thing go, because if you dont then you shouldnt have walked into this film, so beyond that.
-talking dogs
-the bird
-kid with parent issues
-old pissed dude
-more dogs
-a chase scene
what the hell was this movie? it sucked. i'm not even a pessimist, i always think the glass is half full. but wow, i just wasn't digging this it all.
the kids around you were restless cause it sucked so bad that they even knew it was worthless.
the films premise should have been a pixar short that would have won awards. take the first five minutes, then erase the kid and the other stupid plotline, and have the house land on the mountain.

i have a hard time believing some people would put "totally sucked" for a Pixar movie. I guess some people would be against "family friendly" movies, and others just want to skew any kind of poll for the hell of it, but there is an artistic purity that cannot be ignored in Pixar's films. Even if one doesn't like the premise of the movie, at least they would appreciate the art of story-telling and the animation. I think even their weakest movie was still pretty damn amazing when I sit back and think about it, and would never rank even that one below a 7 or 8.

i appreciate pixar, but you know they can make bad films right? the art of story telling wasn't too engulfed in this one either. you may hate me when i say the last great movie they did was ratatouille. wall-e was just borderline ok.

Absolutely loved it. Though it didn't quite top Wall-E for me, it was amazing. Hilarious, sweet; I was really surprised at some of the things they touched on, it might be Pixar's most adult movie yet. But that's why I love these boys. They don't compromise a great story just because it's supposed to be a 'kid's' movie. They continue to impress, because this was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Great movie, great weekend. Aside from Trek, this and Drag Me To Hell were the first really impressive movies this summer.

Both Partly Cloudy and Up were top notch. Dug the dog is the funniest character, but the other dogs aren't as funny as they could have been. I got the biggest laugh when Dug told the joke about the squirrel.

what makes a pixar movie special? for me: great story, intriguing characters and a strong heart. wow, did this movie fall short. i still, for the record, "liked it" but why did pixar fall back on so many over-used formulas? kevin's introduction was uninterestingly dull. i rolled my eyes when russell looked for what was rustling in the bushes one way, & reached his arm with the chocolate the opposite way. how many times have we seen this before? it should've felt like an ode to old wb cartoons, but came off as a poor rip-off. & what's with the dog collars? the dogs apparently can comprehend full english sentences? & apparently stop every now & then to have conversations in english about where their prey might be? huh? put "translating ear-phones" on also, & i might buy it. & russell, regrettably, is the first pixar character i have completely been annoyed with. i wanted a hearing aid so i could turn it down like carl did. & charles muntz was just a thug with a gun, reminding me of the villian in disney's tarzan, note-for-note. i appreciated the film for the emotion that pete docter & team put into the characters even though i didn't feel any myself, and it fell short on so many other levels, it is easily the worst pixar movie i've seen since a bug's life. i am going to watch it again when it comes out on blu-ray because i really hope my opinion changes for the better!
