New Web Series 'Purefold' Takes 'Blade Runner' and Runs
Filed under: Fandom, Tech Stuff, DIY/Filmmaking
We could argue for days if androids really dream of electric sheep or what those damn origami unicorns mean, but one thing we can know for sure is that copyright laws are more confusing than Mormon underwear. An excellent example of this is a new project from Ridley Scott's RSA Films' called Purefold.Free Scott, a part of Ridley Scott Associates Films, is hooking up with indie studio Ag8 to develop Purefold, a web series that will grapple with the themes in Blade Runner without actually referencing that world in any direct fashion. The web shorts, will could eventually become a TV series, will evoke the grand themes of the sci-fi classic -- compassion, humanity, identity, a dystopian future -- without using anything from the book it was based on ... due to copyright issues.
However, in a data-mining twist that Philip K. Dick could perhaps appreciate, Purefold will be a collaborative effort. According to the Ag8 website, "Purefold is an open media franchise designed for brands, platforms, filmmakers, product developers and communities to collaboratively imagine our near future... Taking place in the near future, Purefold enables participating brands to take an alternative route to brand integration than traditional product placement and embrace invention within a narrative framework."
And because Purefold will be using a Creative Commons license, "audiences, brands and platforms [will have] unprecedented equal use rights through their participation." While the idea of allowing fans and artists to participate in creating or enhancing bits of Purefold is exciting and interesting, similar to the world of fan-made machinima films, bringing ad or marketing agencies into the mix gets just a little too meta for me. It's remarkable that Hollywood is getting friendly with CC licensing, but this is definitely something I have a wait-and-see attitude about. It reminds me of William Gibson's Pattern Recognition and "cool hunters" at bars dropping the name of the best new vodka you should drink in your ear. Or perhaps the Tyrell Corporation.

Wow, way to take a cheap shot at a religion! Try to be a little less ADD and a little more focused on the actual subject of your blog. Your attempt to be funny at the expense of a religious group, whatever the group, is pretty lame.

Get over himself? You know, it *did* stick out. And it *was* wrong.
Even though I'm not Mormon, I had a WTF moment right there in the article. It was awkward, didn't fit the article's subject or tone, and really came across as purely mean spirited.

I agree with gurv. If a similar "joke" had been made about Jews or blacks, it would obviously be in bad taste. Hard to take such a "writer" seriously...

Freedom of speech! You get this for free, go read another blog where people are equally tight assed and word fearful. America is so pure with words and so loose on actions. Yeah, it's a joke, get over yourselves, you should be able to make joke out of everything.

Mr. R,
The free speech argument is tired and irrelevant to this discussion. Sure, the blogger has the freedom of speech to make inappropriate comments but just the same, commentators have th freedom of speech to point of that those comments are mean-spirited and distracting. Your whole little "freedom speech" is just calculated to draw an emotional mob reaction of "how dare someone threaten our freedoms!!" while blatantly ignoring what has actually been said in the comments: who on this board is arguing for censorship??!!
You want to take freedom of speech? Here's how it works: You have the freedom to make as many stupid remarks as you want. I have the freedom of speech to point out how stupid your remarks are.
If you want to disagree with something, fine. But don't argue in the name of free speech by criticizing others for sharing an opinion you disagree with. That's just stupid (hey, that's me exercising my freedom right there!).

Hope that rant made you feel way smarter than me. Still, that doesn't change the fact that copyright laws are more confusing than Mormon underwear

I am going to make the Mormon underwear issue a little less confusing for the readers and contributors: The Mormon belief system is an unavailable option in Iraq, I swear on my dead Mother’s grave that this is so. Therefore, I will clone, copyright, and parade as many of these panties in the crisp color of bright orange for the benefit of all true Blade Runner fans around the world that don't confuse their passion for a movie or proposed series with their thin arguments exclaiming the existence for yet another iteration of GOD.
Do you really want to know why no one can save you nor hear your screams…., little man?
Ex. Mankind is truly gifted in its ability to abuse the privilege of conscious-awareness, reasoning, and communication; in that too many of you accept concept alone as definitive proof. You seem to be capable of convincing yourselves of anything. You tend to be easily manipulated, you fall victim to mind control, you work as slaves and you throw the majority of your earnings away; never questioning your misery or the course leading to it. Many of you are quite passionate in avoiding any form of critical thought. You do not follow through with a line of reasoning that causes you mental or emotional discomfort. You refuse to evolve socially or cognitively. You blindly refuse to accept the following:
Only true Blade Runner fans understood that Eldon Terrell = GOD
So take your synthetic Mormon rear back to genetics class, and have a big glass of Higgs Bosoms' while you’re at it!!!
And remember, for the purposes of this article: PUREFOLD is going to rock! The Scott Family really knows how to think outside the box! BR fans UNITE!!!
P.S. Dick Cheney is, and always will be your only true savior.
Jenni Miller is smart, funny and she knows how to make things go!

Terrible. Come on guys use your brains. You cover many of the wrong things. Do you know about Hollywood or not? Even laymen are talking about this more intelligently:

Please I seriously beg of you to stop re-typing whatever branded press release crosses your desk and start covering and elevating stories that are actually valuable.
