Is Will Ferrell Too Much Like George Clooney?
Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Universal, Movie Marketing, Summer Movies
One big-budget box office disappointment does not usually signal the end of a movie star's reign. The woeful under performance of Land of the Lost has observers looking for someone to blame, however, and Will Ferrell is under suspicion. Writing in the Los Angeles Times, columnist Patrick Goldstein suggests: "He's in danger of becoming the comedy equivalent of George Clooney, someone who enjoys a great deal of goodwill but who isn't actually a real movie star."
Goldstein doesn't provide his definition of a "real movie star," but in the context of his column, it clearly is all about the ability to open a big tent pole production to big box office numbers. Goldstein claims: "The verdict in Hollywood: Ferrell hasn't done a good job of managing his brand. [Adam] Sandler is the master of dumb hijinks. Eddie Murphy has become a cuddly family star. But who is Will Ferrell? No one knows anymore."
The theory is that Ferrell made his bones playing "the stupid guy" in a string of raunchy comedies (Old School, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) but hasn't been accepted when it's branched out (Melinda and Melinda, Bewitched, Stranger Than Fiction). Ferrell evidently plays another "stupid guy" in Land of the Lost, but it wasn't sufficiently outrageous for the teen/20s crowd, who flocked to The Hangover, and was too potentially scary for families, who returned to Up.
Why did you skip Land of the Lost? Confused by the marketing? Burned out on Will Ferrell? Do you want to see him return to raunchy, R-rated comedies -- like The Hangover? Are Ferrell and George Clooney "real" movie stars?

First, I wasn't feeling the trailer for Land of the Lost.
Second, when he did that guest stint on that Discovery show, that reeked of desperation, and finally I really don't like studios trying to remake these big epic films of shows I grew up with.
Some shows should just be left alone.

If the definition of a movie star is "the ability to open a big tent pole production to big box office numbers", then who are the movies stars? I honestly can't think of one actor or actress who hasn't had some box office disappointments with big films over the past few years. I don't think people say "oh, I have to go see the new (insert star name here) movie" anymore. They go based on trailers and buzz and what's showing at the time they want to go. Release a family film around Christmas and you can have a hit ("Marley and Me"). Release a comedy in January when all the other films are oscar contenders and you can have a hit ("Paul Blart: Mall Cop"). Does that all of a sudden make Owen Wilson and Kevin James movie stars: financially bankable no matter what the film or when it's releases?
Maybe "Land of the Lost" came out at a time when it had other comedies and other special effects films with which to compete. Maybe few people remember or care about the original tv series. Maybe the trailers looked silly instead of funny. Maybe it's just not very good when there are lots of choices and new movies coming every week.

I'm still a Will Ferrell fan having seen everything from Night at the Roxbury to Anchorman/Talledega, the skating movie, the soccer movie, ELF Hell I even saw Stranger than fiction which honestly story-wise was subpar and it felt like a half ass version of Charlie Kaufman's Adapatation. but the script has nothing to do with Ferrell and I applaud him for taking a risk. I actually wanted to see Semi-Pro as Andre 3000 was in it but I certainly didn't want to shell out money in the theater. And Step Bros. I guess I skipped that one just because there were too many other movies to see including Dark Knight, Pineapple, Tropic Thunder. But either way his movies are making bank. NOW... as for Land of the Lost, I was kinda interested in this at first but once the trailer came out it looked more actiony cliche' rather than a funny fest with McBride and Ferrell. So, I don't hate him, still think he's funny but he churns out so many movies that I'll be a little choosy, I still rank him funnier than Stiller/Owen Wilson. And yea, I should have probably seen Step Bros. in theaters instead of Tropic Thunder definitely overrated, bloated film which aside from Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise just falls kinda falt.

In my point of view, if George Clooney is not a (huge) movie star , Patrick Goldstein is not a journalist...

Goldstein is right...Clooney not a movie star. He makes flop after flop and then quickly does a Ocean's sequel(w/Pitt, etc,...) to prop up his career.

Agreed. Clooney is a movie star the same way Paris Hilton is a movie star, which is to say they both happen to be very famous people who happen to be in movies.

I think will ferrell is an aquired taste. i have a friend that hates him. while i enjoy him. i think some of his movies u need to watch more than once. i was hyped up to see old school saw it and hated it. i watched more than once and its now one of my favourite movies of all time.
HOWEVER i think he overdoes his humour and should scale back on some of his roles.
blades of glory was garbage. the guy that played napoleon dynamite IS NOT FUNNY why does he continue to get roles?
i think will needs to get in and do old school 2

Land of the Lost looked too much like a Will Ferrell movie. In a way, it almost looked to me like he wasn't straying far enough away from his "brand". Or at least that's how the preview tries to sell it; stupid, gross-out humor and dim-witted characters.
Plus, bad special effects on an old TV show can be funny and charming. In a movie, bad effects cheapen the experience. I don't blame this flick's failure on Ferrell, so much as I do on it being an all around bad idea.

Nobody knows anymore? The guy just turned a silly premise (Step Brothers) into a 100 million dollar movie?
Land of the Lost was a bad idea. Who was it for? It looked too dumb for 'tween, not really a little kids movie, no appeal for anyone over 16. If anything, it proves that Ferrell is a real movie star because he could somehow convince someone to fund a movie that seemed like a terrible idea from the start.

George Clooney is an actor and a very good one at that- he has integrity and is willing to risk his popularity to shift focus from trivial celebrity onto his political campaigns Darfur being the most prominent. In what way does that even remotely resemble Will Farrell? If LOTL didnt open well then it was because of negative word of mouth and a dated cheesy concept. The idea of he movie was too far removed from the movies Farrel normally does- lets face it he has a very limited range- an didnt appeal to the teenage young adult fan base that like him. This was a silly comparison!!

I went to see The Hangover instead because I had people to go with (I still don't like to go alone). Now that I have someone to take to see Land of the Lost, I will see it.
I think it just got put up against other movies that would be funnier to a wider range of people.
I like Will Ferrell's humor, but there are many who don't. I think he plays the stupid guy perfectly and that's what he should stick to. It's his thing.

hahaha,so funny.....if the ability of an actor was to be judged based on the box office, it's just so naive and silly.
just look back the silverscreen history: most of the meaningful, Oscar awarded films that needs skillful play of actors and actress usually can't attract huge bunch of audience.those artistic and meaningful films are too deep, and perhaps too dull for many people. Is this mean that the involving actors can't act? come on! no doubt George Clooney may not be the best actor alive, he is definitely a fine quality actor with grade A acting skills. if good box office results signified great acting skills, errrmm....can Zac Effron act? Moreover, every actor has his own niche of talents and fans. you should never ask everyone to love every work of a particular actor. Judging them based on their certain products is just mean and stupid.Everyone should remember this: before you look down on someone that good, you should judge yourself! Can you act in front of camera as good as both the actors? do you have the great sense of humour as theirs? do you have what it take to be that famous or influential? It's just like an article written by anybody. you can't hope everyone to love it even though it is good!

I skipped Land of the Lost because The Hangover was opening, but also because Ferrell hasn't had a good movie in 5 years. Even when he is in a good movie (even if he's the lead) it's usually the supporting cast that holds him up anyway (see especially Anchorman).

Oddly, Land of the Lost is actually the first Will Ferrell movie I've wanted to see in a while, while I had zero interest in Semi-Pro, Blades of Glory, or Step Brothers, and kinda thought Talladega Nights sucked. I did like Stranger than Fiction, though.

I watched the TV show as a kid and was looking forward to the movie - until I saw the trailer. It was painfully unfunny. If I'm going to plunk down eight bucks or more, the movie needs to draw me with decent reviews or an appealing preview. This movie had neither.
