Watch This: David Fincher's iPhone 3GS Commercial

I couldn't begin to describe how excited I was yesterday when I had to have my iPhone replaced at the Apple store due to it breaking a month after I bought it only to learn that Apple has just launched a new iPhone to screw with folks who recently bought the old one. Don't you love those guys? To coincide with the latest iPhone 3GS (which I heard features an app that will actually babysit your kids and one that will take your girlfriend to a boring chick flick -- but don't quote me on that), Apple has launched a new marketing campaign beginning with this commercial from director David Fincher, who's apparently a pretty big mac junkie.
To be quite honest, I was hoping for colorful dancing set to some sort of quirky hipster tune, but instead what we have here is some dude breaking in to iPhone headquarters (or some such place) in order to test out the phone's new video function. It's not exactly brilliant, but Fincher directed it alongside his Fight Club cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth. Will this be the first of a set of related ads? Guess we'll see.

Hey Erik, a small suggestion: To be saved from being screwed in the future by Apple, you may want to go to: the macrumors website and check their "Buyer's Guide". It can act as a reference point. Brilliant website!

My take on it was that he's not testing the video feature at all. The spy's just getting a look at it and noticing that from the outside it's the same as the previous iPhone. When the other guy comes in he checks the phone and notices the video of the spy's camera that the phone took (which is why he looks up). Therefore revealing that difference is not cosmetic but inside the phone. yes?

I don't really want to be that guy, but I felt that was quite obvious... Yes?

agreed. but in the article mr. davis states 'what we have here is some dude breaking in to iPhone headquarters (or some such place) in order to test out the phone's new video function' which made me think he missed the gag. or maybe thought the guy who walks in at the end was the same guy from above... no?

... and i probably should've pointed out in my original comment that i was referring to that particular remark by mr. davis. my mistake.

No, I didn't miss the gag -- it's pretty obvious. Though I was talking about why he's breaking in, and the ultimate reason could be to test the new iPhone. Aha!

Dude, you bought an iphone a month before everyone on the planet was speculating there'd be a new one?
And Apple has had a history of annual upgrades announced at WWDC?
Anyway, I found the commercial fairly boring.

A standard needs to be created so all phones from all brands on all networks (including computers with webcams) can video call with each other. (If hardly anyone can talk with each other, like if you could only talk to other iPhone owners, it won't ever catch on)
Cell networks need to be dramatically improved to allow for anything close to wide-spread usable quality. (people need to just know that video calling will work no matter where they are before they start regularly using it. If it seems spotty, they'll just forget about it)
Until then it will be an extremely buggy, gimmicky feature that you might use to show off but when it came down to it, would sit idle. They're BARELY getting MMS standardized between different carriers (even just a few years ago it was big news that Verizon and Sprint could send pictures to each other) and phones and imagine how simple that is compared to live streaming video.
share your views at http://www.iPhone3GS.org it's just for the iPhone 3G s.

I really like the music in this ad. Anyone know the song. It might have been made just for the commercial though.
