New Trailer for Martin Scorsese's 'Shutter Island'
Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

My first thoughts after watching the new trailer for Marty Scorsese's Shutter Island were ... "it looks damn creepy ... I dig it!" The trailer is over on Apple right now (watch it here in several different formats) and it sorta looks like a ghost story; a nifty psychological thriller for the director who took home Oscars the last time he had a feature narrative on the big screen (and I say feature narrative because if I simply said "movie" you'd all jump on me with "Nooooo you're wrong -- his last film was the Rolling Stones doc, Erik. How about you fact check blogger!"). Fact. Checked.
Based on the Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) novel, Shutter Island stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as a couple of U.S. Marshals who travel to the remote Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a murderess/patient at the island's strange loony bin where, naturally, a guy like Ben Kingsley runs the show. I swear, Kingsley totally knows how to creep you out with those freaky eyes and that bald head and that icy stare. Goose bumps. Film looks good; it almost feels like Marty took what could've been a simple thriller dumped into theaters in the middle of winter starring Jessica Alba and That Guy Who Guest Starred on Gossip Girl and turned it into a pretty meaty (and enticing) fall (or winter) snack attack.
What do you think?

Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Scorcese, Leo, and Kingsley and Ruffalo-though to a lesser degree. In any case, that's a lot of serious talent. It doesn't hurt that I'm a huge Lehane fan, and the (fantastic) books of his that they have adapted for the screen have turned out pretty damn great as well. I liked Shutter Island a lot; it was creepy, disturbing, definitely different, but ultimately awesome. I hope they adapt it right, because it could make for one hell of a flick. By the looks of the trailer, they nailed it.

"Shutter Island" is my favorite Lehane novel. I can't wait for the movie. As Dan said, it looks like they really nailed the book. The best thing about "Gone, Baby, Gone" was how faithful Affleck was to the source material. Scenes in the movie were exactly as described in the book. It looks like Scorsese has done a similar job here.

I've also read the book and it is great. Luckily a genius like Scorsese is directing it rather than any run-of-the-mill director who cranks out crappy thrillers. The ending is amazing, and Scorsese definitely has the emotional depth to pull it off.

Damn! Being an unconventional movie lover I'm not very good with thriller/horror, and it kind of disappoints me that this is his next film. I absolutely love his stuff, but don't know if I can bring myself to go to this one :(

Am I the only one that thinks this looks like sh$t? Am I also the only that that thought Gone Baby Gone was a horrible movie along the lines of Million Dollar Poopy, Cr$sh and Gran Tor-IsThisCrammedDownYourThroatEnough-O? Sorry, but this looks like a slick, well lit and fancily filmed piece of garbage that has no resonance with what made Scorsese "Scorsese"... well, modestly crafted, human, imperfect, painful dramas that make you feel it at the core. This movie looks like a car commercial. Call me the hater, but I was kind of expecting more negative nancys on here.

Just what kind of car would you be rushing out to buy after watching this? Seems you maybe identified a bit too readily with the looney bin aspect of the movie an have rushed out an bought yourself an ambulance!!
The trailer looks great an unless your surname is Pressburger then I doubt Scorsese is worried by your negativity:) Have a nice day xx
ps: If you need me to explain the reference Im happy to oblige.

A car that looks slick, has a shiny paint job but just got bought out by the government. I mean, seriously, does this movie really look that interesting or original? The trailer hurt me to watch. Respond please.

I see it as being a homage to the film noir type thrillers of the 30s, 40s. In the same way that Scorsese remade Cape Fear referencing Hitchcock there will be elements of Hitchcock and Powell in Shutter Island. Watch it with those references and admire the fact that hes not doing a period piece that isn't about Irish immigrants or crooked cops. Secretly I think you quite like it really! :) What would you rather see? I always use Biran De Palmas awful, awful, awful Black Dalliah movie as a benchmark and Shutter Island will be a masterpiece compared to that.

Im glad so many are digging the trailer as much as I am. I'm also very happy to see so many have read the fantastic novel, as have I.
I was initially skeptical about Di Caprio in the main role, although that fear has been completely put to rest when I reflect on how well he portrays the going crazy aspect.
I think the trailer gives a little too much away, but that is almost always the case. I expect this to be a medium length movie (a little under 2.5 hours) and the excellent cast should provide such a great atmosphere that it will be a joy.
Can't wait for this movie, and I'm passing on word that the trailer is out to friends and family in hopes they will read the novel.

Fuck me, that was awful.
It looks like some crap made for 12 yr olds. What's up with that ear-splitting soundtrack? They going for the ADD crowd with this?
More to the point, where's the STORY? It's just a bunch of random shots. I hope to god this isn't reflective of the movie because if it is Scorsese's just laid one big fucking egg.
