'The Time Traveler's Wife' Finally Gets a Trailer
Filed under: Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, New Line, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

The Time Traveler's Wife is one of those sad cases that has gone from "eagerly anticipated" to "when's that coming out?" to vanishing off most people's radar, which is dangerous considering it comes out this August. Hopefully, the trailer can awaken interest again, although it may be of the "Oh my God, they ruined the story!" kind.
The trailer is up on Yahoo! Movies in high definition, but I've put an embed below the jump to make things easier for you. I haven't read the book (I know, I know. My to-read list is endless, believe me), but I was under the impression it was a lot more heart wrenching and serious, whereas this looks rather lighthearted for a separated-by-time romance. I was hoping for a tear-jerker on the level of The Fountain, where separation is truly terrifying and horrendous, and not just a minor inconvenience for the holidays.
Now, I know there's some major fans of Audrey Niffenegger's book out there, and I'm eager to hear some knowledgable analysis in the comments. Even if this isn't the kind of love story that will tear out my heart and leave me emotionally battered, at least I know there will be Eric Bana to enjoy. He does cut a dashingly dissolved figure!

I really enjoyed the book but this trailer sells it like lightweight romantic fodder, that's not what I got from the book at all. Looks like it could be a washout - very sad...

I'm going to hope that it's a matter of the trailer reflecting the marketing peoples' desire of what kind of a movie they could be selling instead of the much more serious story that is TTW. Looks very nice though, and the kids playing Alba is almost perfect looking for the role. (For that matter, I know they had to come up with some sort of visual for the time shifts, and that works pretty well.)

I'd heard from a huge fan of the book that the film's script was terrible, but I was holding out hope. However, after seeing this preview, I'm convinced that the book has been ruined.

By tear jerker and The Fountain you meant tears of pain watching it, right?

The trailer doe seem a lot fluffier and lighter than the book, but honestly who cares, we HAVE the book, now we're getting Bana and McAdams together. Let's just take what we can get

I don't see anything that wasn't in the book, so that's good, they're turning it into something we can't recognize. Let's just hope that the important elements that made it so poingant are in there too otherwise it will be a waste of time and money.

That looks pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty crap. I enjoyed the book, though, and this film coming out won't spoilt that. So, whatever.

I was so excited when I first saw the trailer posted on themoviebox.net, but it quickly turned to horror upon watching it. This is one of my favorite books and the movie looks absolutely terrible. I also saw it in front of a sneak preview of "The Proposal" and it took everything I had not to groan through it. This looks like "The Notebook"-lite. Lighter than a Nicolas Sparks novel! I do like Rachel McAdams, she is a good choice but I don't think she's going to be saving this movie on her own. Too bad.

Usually when you've seen a trailer, you've almost seen the whole movie, at least that's the junk the studios usually dump on us. This trailer is a big relief - I've seen the finished version of the film and nearly all of the best scenes have been kept OUT of the trailer, which is great. This is going to be surprise blockbuster when it hits the screens. The film is certainly much more emotional than the trailer would hint at, and keeps true to its origins. Can't wait.

I have no idea from the trailer, but I have heard in general the ending is still supposed to be what it was in the book. I think this is supposed to lure people in and then it'll probably have a mood whiplash.
What did bother me in the trailer was the whininess of "I didn't choose this, wah, waiting sucks." Clare wasn't a whiner in the book. If it's all whining, I won't be too thrilled.

I read this book and absolutely loved it. I've been eagerly awaiting this trailer and unlike others am not dissapointed at all. While it may be a bit more light-hearted and cheesy, it looks like they cover alot of the story, as well as Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana's acting seem perfect!! Especially the part on the divan, towards the end of the trailer...that is exactly how I pictured that scene. As for tears, I had them in my eyes just watching the trailer (New Year's scene), because it reminds me of the book and how beautiful the story is. I am so excited for this to come out, even if it does flop, I'll probably love it.

I hope Cornelius J. is telling the truth because I LOVE the book & feel that it is a very tough one to translate to the screen.
Even though I don't have high hopes for the movie I'm glad they made it, love the casting & hope it is great. I've been wrong before. (I feel that book to screen adapts have a 50% success rate.)
If the film keeps the dark parts of the book in it (& Bruce Joel Rubin wrote Jacob's Ladder) then this film could be the next Benjamin Button (which destroyed me).
The effect of Bana dissappearing is fantastic. I can't wait to see it.

Like many of the other commenters here, I am a huge fan of TTW book and I have read it a couple times. The trailer seems very much leaning only to the soft romantic parts of the story, which are very important but not all there is to this incredible story. I hope the film does not leave out the gritty dark portions of the novel, these are just as important and weave a counterbalance.
We shall see, maybe there will be an alternate trailer that will include all story aspects of this movie if they are indeed there to begin with.
