Special Agent Dale Cooper Heads Back to 'Twin Peaks'?
Filed under: RumorMonger, Fandom, Home Entertainment

Diane,
It's June 17, 2009, and I'm coming back to Twin Peaks.
How's this for a shocking piece of news: Seventeen years after Kyle MacLachlan last appeared as Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, WENN reports that the actor wants to resurrect the legendary show on the Internet. The actor says: "I have a crazy idea to bring back Twin Peaks on the net as five-minute webisodes." Should this become a reality, it will be without David Lynch, whose "focus is more on transcendental meditation now."
To be, or not to be ... I can't decide. At the very least, the idea doesn't fill me with revulsion or dread, but rather curiosity and a whole lot of questions. Would Cooper still be the same without Lynch molding him? And what of co-creator Mark Frost -- would he be involved? Even if the other quirky half is too busy meditating, Peaks webisodes are a much more worthy project than Frost's recent stints writing the Fantastic Four movies. Would these just be more tapes to Diane? Would other faces come back? Would it matter? *Spoiler Alert*
There's not many faces that could come back -- and definitely not many of the more desirable ones, unless MacLachlan is looking to dip into the Black Lodge more. Okay, should this get a little bit evil -- I'm sold. Who wouldn't want to see Bob's wicked control of Cooper, plus more Laura, Leland (Ray Wise!!), and of course, The Man From Another Place?
My fangirl has gotten the best of me, but what about you? Are you in for more Twin Peaks if it's without David Lynch?

At best, it would have to impersonate David Lynch, and really, there's no substitute.
I wouldn't be interested.

People forget that Twin Peaks by s2 had both Mark Frost and David Lynch bugger off to make films and thats why Twin Peaks ultimately failed as it became an 'kooky' version of itself... the same thing would happen with the webisodes but in saying that how much would I lOVE to see them!!

Sounds like he needs money.
Twin Peaks without Lynch is weak coffee, as evidenced by some of the limper sans-lynch second season episodes.

I'd be interested. I'm a bit younger, fell in love with the series when I got the gold box rather than when it originally aired. Fire walk With Me and the series ending didn't sit that well with me, so I'd like to revisit the characters, though it'll be hard to work around , ending how it did.

I'd watch anything Twin Peaks-related, anytime, no matter what sort of giant-chinned Dune star was behind it. But considering that Twin Peaks was awful whenever Lynch wasn't directly involved, this would almost certainly suck.
Unless, like you suggested, it was from the perspective of the Black Lodge. That might be good no matter who's behind the wheel (I'm looking at you, Diane Keaton).

David Lynch is the Internet now. He's said time and time again that he wants nothing to do with television and he's been putting all of his efforts onto the Internet (like his new interview project).
There's no reason that Lynch wouldn't be interested in doing this online (if he's interested at all). It seems to me that this is something MacLachlan really wants to do and he hasn't spoken with Lynch about it.

If you've seen Lynch's latest work, you can tell his more interested in returning to his roots (Eraserhead), then in making anything that has any form of narrative. I think Lynch has left narrative behind, and is headed out into avante garde, gallery type work. I don't think he would have any interest in returning to this kind of more accessible film making. Its too bad, his cusping the experimental with an actual story is what made him such a visionary. The world has plenty of of experimental film makers, but not ones who make experimental narratives with hollywood stars. Alas.

Speaking of Fire Walk With Me, that's when Twin Peaks really needed Special Agent Dale Cooper returning. The film had to tweak the show's continuity and introduce Special Agent Chester Desmond to investigate the Teresa Banks case because MacLachlan was hesitant to do the entire film as Cooper for fear of being typecast.
You're 17 years too late to come crawling back, Kyle. You're not Special Agent Phillip Jeffries.

I don't agree by any means that Twin Peaks episodes without Lynch were 'awful' - he only directed six episodes out of thirty and plenty others were really good, often better than Lynch-directed ones. Lynch often tended for darker, bleaker feeling episodes that removed some of the warmth of the show. This was true for the film Fire Walk with Me too, which wasn't popular, however much people might like to re-assess it. Lynch basically went the unpopular, anguished and rather iffy way with that film.
But in terms of this comment and its legitimacy, is there a genuine link to Kyle? There have been rumours of projects like this before, linked to Mark Frost too and talks of a Cooper mini-series, but nothing came of it.

MacLachlan doesn't need to crawl. He was the star of the show. When the show started to deal with the theme of... nothing at all, after Lynch left after episode 16, it was much due to him that a few people still insisted to watch it. ABC killed Twin Peaks by forcing them to reveal the killer's identity. To SOME extent it was also Lynch's fault for leaving when that happened, for leaving the crew alone to run the show without really much idea what it would be about. Kyle was also the one calling Lynch on behalf of the crew and trying to get him back.
About Lynch's input: It's true that he only directed six episodes. But when he was on board as executive producer and giving the story directions and as long as the Laura Palmer storyline was still alive, the show was still very good even with other directors. When he came back for the last episode one could again see a huge increase in quality.

Ah, that last episode. Ultimately I was happy with the second season because it all led to that.

What is he talking about with 'transcendental meditation'? Lynch is all over the internet with new shorts and all kinds of stuff. I see no reason he wouldn't be up for a Twin Peaks web series but for rights issues and nagging artistic integrity.

Lynch must be involved, even if it was just to give approval to the project. Twin Peaks was his brain child with Mark Frost (out of a project about Marilyn Monroe that was cancelled before it began). If MacLachlan is going to be true to the "Twin Peaks World" Laura Palmer can't be in these webisodes. In the finale she told him he wouldn't see her again for 25 years, its only been 18 since the finale.

Many of the best episodes of the TV show have no (or minimal) Lynch involvement. I adore Lynch's work but we should not pretend that the TV series was solely his creation, that denigrates the contributions of Frost, Engels, Scott and others.
As with everything whether this works or not will depend on the writing.

I'd watch. Kyle MacLachlan is a great actor and Cooper was a great character. If he knows the character well enough, I'll be sure to be entertained.
Heck, even if this was a "The Dale Cooper Show" - style spin-off, I'd still tune in.
