New '2012' Trailer Destroys ... Everything
Filed under: Trailers and Clips
No one makes things go "boom!" like the German "Master of Disaster." Director Roland Emmerich introduces a new trailer for his end of the world thriller 2012, which you can watch over at Yahoo! Movies. After taking a look, all I can say is, "Holy crap! John Cusack is in this movie?"
Admittedly, I haven't been paying very much attention to the project. The first teaser hit last November, and featured gigantic waves washing over the Himalayas (or a similar huge mountain range). The waves return in the new trailer, which starts with a newscaster talking about the Mayan calendar's prediction of the end of the world in the titular year and then leads to John Cusack's instant conversion from doubter to believer (maybe) before everything -- and I mean everything! -- starts to slip, slide, crash, burn, and, yes, go "boom!"
From the brief glimpses of dramatic scenes included, let's just say that the main, and possibly only, reason to see the movie will be to appreciate the creative work of hundreds of gifted visual effects artists. (In other words, it's in line with Emmerich's previous disaster flicks Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow). This is destruction depicted on a truly grand scale; Emmerich and his team have clearly been thinking BIG. The film was originally set to open next month, but Sony Pictures bumped it back a few months. If we're all still around, it will open on November 13.

Sure, the story looks terrible, but MY GOD that CGI was amazing! I'm one of those people that is sick of the over-use of CGI in movies these days but even I have to admit those effects were mind-blowing.
p.s.- I found the scene with the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel cracking directly between the touching fingers to be hilarious for some reason...

Cusack's not that surprising (but no Joan? Aren't they contractually obligated to be in the same movie?), but Chiwetel Ejiofor showing up surprised me and took it from "hmmm, brainless disaster film in theatre, could be a good way to spend a couple hours" to "Aw damn, now I have to see this."
A bit cheesy on the symbolism though. Jesus over Rio crumbling, the crack in the Sistine Chapel coming between God and Adam, the USS JFK being the aircraft carrier... at least nobody will accuse Emmerich of being subtle.
Definitely looks visually impressive.

Ha, it LOOKED like independence day and the day after tomorrow rolled into one. I guess it is better than a re-boot of both movies!
I think it will be a beautiful looking disaster.

I predict that it will do okay, but not great (or even good) at the theaters and DVD, but it will be huge on cable in 2012.

I predict it'll due huge numbers and then sink like an aircraft carrier after the first week.
Great cgi, overt, ponderous symbolism. Get a tub of popcorn, turn off your critical brain and enjoy teh ride.

While we're on the topic of prophecies I predict this movie will suck ass. Roland Emmerich is a hack and his movies are empty, laughable CGI-driven train wrecks. Impressive or not, effects only go so far before the lack of story turns into boredom. Heck, I got bored with the trailer.
Sure, it'll put butts in seats but in November? This is a summer movie. That release date doesn't bode well for its box office.
I agree with Slappy, I laughed way more than I should have at the trailer.
John Cusack, what were you thinking man?

I saw a preview of this movie and it ROCKS. Surprisingly a very well told story...better than anything Roland Emmerich has ever done. Can't wait to see it finalized.

so i went to see a movie yesterday and saw this trailer.. and it starts off like a cartoonish explanation of the theory behind 2012.. .. "SOO the sun emits radiation that causes the earth to heat up and melts the earths core.---which cause the plates to move around destroying everything". because plates dont move before 2012? i have to admit the visuals looks great .. but did these poople pay any attention in science class!!???????
