Do Guys Quote Movies More Than Girls?

Reading through Todd's interview with The Proposal director Anne Fletcher, I came across this quote that stuck right out. While discussing Fletcher's most memorable summer moviegoing experience, she says, "You know, it's funny, but I have this generalization, it's completely general, but I really believe in my soul that men quote and women don't. Women will experience a movie on a totally different level, generally speaking, and they'll go, "I loved that movie" or "I didn't like that movie" and that will always stay on them, but they won't remember a single quote. And men will experience a movie in an entirely cerebral way and be able to quote lines 50 years from now – and they connect with each other through them."
Now of course there's always an exception to the rule (an example being our own Elisabeth Rappe, who can probably quote me under the table), but this is generally the case for most of the women in my life -- where they're perfectly happy discussing a movie at length, but the ladies around me will never randomly quote. Meanwhile, all my guy friends do is quote movies; in fact, I'd say they're all movie quote whores.
I'd love to hear from both sides on this -- especially from those females who love movies, but never really find themselves quoting any. Is it that guys are more interested in the quick reference, whereas the girls would rather sit down and have a conversation? Is Fletcher right? What do you think?

No idea what kind of women she's been hanging out with. Honest to God, my friends and I can't go one day at work without quoting Star Wars, Transformers, The Simpsons, or something ridiculous. I did Denis Lemieux's opening monologue from 'Slap Shot' for my friends the other day.

Its a rare thing indeed to come across a girl who actually loves to quote movies as much as the guys I know. The ones I know that do it are quite nerdy and less girly. I think girly girls tend to spend their time in other ventures, like looking good and getting what they want. Guys dont have the same luxuries as good lookin girls so i think priorities are in very different places. This goes the same for guys who are in a very different head space. Movie quoters are a particular sort of people I suppose. I agree with the idea that girls experience movies on a different level, but I wouldnt limit it to them. There is probably a higher percentage of women that are like that but many men lack the quality also.

Yeah, I disagree with Fletcher. I think I quote more than I say original sentences. Hell, I even quote 27 Dresses.
"- What about you? You don't have any needs?
- No. I'm Jesus."
Seriously, that movie is surprisingly quotable...
Okay, someone can rip my geek card now.

I don't think it's entirely gender based. I'm a guy and I almost never quote movies, it makes me embarrassed to, and for the most part, unless I've seen the movie a few times or it's a David Gordon Green movie, it's hard for me to remember any quotes. A (male) friend of mine quoted a line near the end of my favorite movie of last year, only a few days or so after I'd seen it, and I had no idea what he was talking about.

For some reason I picture Vader quoting about "Dude, where's my car?!"

Anytime my wife has a strange experience at a hotel she aptly questions, "What kind of hotel is this?!"
come to think of it, for some reason 85% of her movie quoting comes from Tommy Boy.

I'm going to have to disagree also. I quote several times a day when the situation calls for it. It's something I've done since I was young. My brothers, and my friends will shoot some quotes back, sometimes making a game out of it. "Betcha you don't know what that's from." So I find it remarkable to assume such a thing is gender based.

Although I agree, not many women quote movies.
I think they probably quote movies that guys don't watch or care about... Ladies could quote Sex and the City all day long and I'd have no idea what they're talking about.
Case in point; I was doing the humpty-hump with a girlfriend years ago and she said something about "Princess Sofia"- I thought she was crazy/stupid. Then a couple years later, for some reason, I watched '10 ways to lose a guy' and I finally knew what she was quoting... I still wasn't amused, but whatever.
Conversely, when I quote ‘Commando’ lines back and forth with my buddy, my girlfriend thinks I’m a tard. Just a thought.

While I find that men do quote movies more often, it seems mighty elitist to say that "Women will experience a movie on a totally different level". I think we all experience movies on different levels and in different ways, but it has no correlation to whether or not we quote them.

More often than not, I'll find myself in a situation where a quote would be perfect, but my brain never fires it immediately, and I'll end up remembering it like an hour later. HOWEVER, I could quote The Office all day long, I don't know if that says anything about the two mediums of entertainment...Probably doesn't, but I'd like to think there's some significance behind it.

I think the reason why I don't quote movies more often, is that I can't ever think of fitting quotes in time to say them in conversations.
I wish I could quote films more often, but it's my memory that brings me down :P

I'd have to disagree slightly ... I'm a woman and I quote movies constantly. But maybe I'm an anomaly.

My best friend and I, both of us women, will sometimes have entire conversations in movie quotes.
This is stereotyping.
The movies that women stereotypically watch don't tend to be as "quotable."

I quote movies with my little sister all the time! My all-time favorite to use when something annoying happens is from Dogma : "It never ends!"
I can't count the number of conversations I've had with either her or my guys friends that have consisted of about 75 % quotes from every type of genre. Don't really know if that's healthy or not, but they sure as hell were fun :)

Yeah, I really think this is a random stereotype. I quote movies more than anyone I know. I'm most proud of being able to fit in, "I'm like Christmas morning" into a conversation. Though, "So you agree, you think you're really pretty?" is a close second. But who knows, maybe I'm the exception to prove the rule--though based on this thread that doesn't seem to be the case.

I think this is completely true. I actually *just* had this conversation recently because a male friend of mine said he has a tendency to watch a movie he likes 10 times over (he's already gone to see The Hangover three times in the theater) so he can get all the quotes, and he'd rather do that than go see a new movie he's never seen.
Granted, that behavior is a little crazy, but it made me realize I almost never watch the same movie twice. And I can't quote movies (or the more commonly quoted thing with the males in my life, The Simpsons) to save my life.
