What Do 'Transformers 2' and 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Have in Common?
.jpg)
While I have yet to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (mainly because a little newborn baby has kept me from leaving the crib), I've been real interested in the cries of racism being echoed throughout the internet when it comes to the new Transformers robots Mudflap and Skids (pictured above). Here's how director Michael Bay described them: "Some of the junior Transformers are just dumb. But it's great for kids because they're like the Little Engine That Could. They're (screw)-ups, but they get really heroic at the end." And here's how Movieline described them: "There are two robots in the film called Mudflap and Skids, and despite being red and green, respectively, they are voiced in a way that clearly designates them to be the "black" robots. Also, Skids has a gold front tooth (no, I'm serious) and both cannot read."
CHUD's Devin Faraci adds to the debate: "Simply put they are offensive beyond measure, and if their names were Stepin and Fetchit I could maybe argue that they were a joke or a bit of meta-commentary or anything except horrible, horrible racial stereotypes." So what does this all have to do with SpongeBob SquarePants? Well, funnily enough, those expecting a comedic black actor to be the voice behind both Mudflap and Skids will certainly be surprised to learn that, in reality, Tom Kenny (aka the voice of SpongeBob) is the dude who brought The Twins to life on screen. I'm not sure this info makes the whole thing any less racist, but I just found it kinda funny and interesting and bizarre. (Kenny also voices various robots in the Transformers animated series as well.)
For those who have seen the new film, what did you think of Mudflap and Skids?

Ahaha, okay because of this news that Tom Kenny did the voices for those two i don't hate those characters so much. Otherwize this movie was pure garbage, I left the theatre with a headache. Thank goodness i saw this movie with free advances passes. Not that I was going to actually pay for it when it came out, but atleast now I have the right to criticize it.

If these are racially-tinged robots it would not be the least surprising with Jazz from the first one being the only robot on the Autobot side to be killed albeit in the worst way, talking trash and then being ripped in half. He was also clearly the "black" robot of the group.

Saw the film yesterday and was truly shocked by the racially insensitive portrayal of the RC Twins. Michael Bay has given this generation our equivalent of the crows from "Disney's Dumbo."
In response to Michael, just because you cannot see (or refuse to accept) the RC Twins as detrimental stereotypes does not diminish their status as such. The words "minstrel show" kept popping into my head everytime one of the twins spoke. Political correctness means admitting the injustices of the past in an attempt to prevent them from ever happening again.

Monique, thank you for bringing up Jazz! I remember looking around the theater thinking "surely someone's going to be offended by this." Then again, they were there to see Transformers, so maybe they already had enough to be offended about. Hi-yo!

As a black professional I'm torn between disliking the glamorization of such "personalities" and the continued appearance of them.
Is it the chicken or the egg?
I don't know but there definitely seems to be some kind of disconnect since this country now has a black President.
I guess I'll settle for "both groups make me SICK!!!!!!!!"
Underachievers.

Ok, their robots! They have no race distinction (except the whole Autobots & Decepticons). They come in all shapes & sizes. So what if the guy that does their voices is black. I think that they are offended by it is offensive. Get over it!

I am a black female Engineer and I am very in touch with my race, yet did not find this offensive at all. I let people think what they want to think. I know who I am and could care less about stereotypes! I work hard, play hard and live hard so don't have time to play the oh pity me, "they talkin bout us" role, because I know they aren't talking about me. I am living proof that you can make lemons out of lemonade. Get a life people, its a Movie! If you want to make an inpact go volunteer to teach some kids in your spare time like I do, there's your impact!

Besides, if they sound like that, that means that they listened to transmissions of bet and other african-american centric telli

I am sure the majority of those who are "so offended" by these robots are white...why?, because somewhere in your subconsciousness, this is the way you see black people so you think someone is now reading your thoughts and putting them on the big screen. Black people do not see ourselves in that image, so it was pure comedy to me. People have taken this "political correctness" to a whole new level. I say it is just another phrased used by white people when they want to take the spot light off the fact that they are the creators of alot of these stereo types. Again, it is only offensive if that is how I see myself, I don't, so I laughed myself into a coma almost. Go somewhere and do some community service and stop ready so deep in to stuff all the time.

Shanina, speak for yourself. Just because you don't see yourself like that doesn't mean someone else doesn't. It was annoying beyond belief.

I really had no problem with Skids or Mudflap. While I was sitting in the theater laughing my head off, not once did I think any of that was racist. Just because they had an accent doesn't make 'em racist! Everyone needs to just calm down. I highly doubt any of their dialogue was intended by the film makers to be in anyway offensive. In fact, watching the ramblings-on of those two junior Autobots was, for me, one of the highlights of the film. Even in the seriousness of this type of movie, they can still throw in some comedy and keep the tone overall. I don't understand why, but almost every review of this movie was negative. I for one loved it. Not once during that movie did I lose interest. It was a movie that I am going to remember forever. Oh, one more thing before I go, in the theater I was in, White people, Black people, Mexican people, well, everyone laughed as hard as I did.

I didn't notice the racism. I just wanted them to die because they were really f**king annoying. My boyfriend and I were really excited when one of them got sucked up into oblivion, only to be sadly disappointed by his unfortunate return. In my opinion, why are people focusing on the "racist" subject matter? The movie is offensive in other parts as well and just as stupid.
Although if Michael Bay honestly said, "Some of the junior Transformers are just dumb. But it's great for kids because they're like the Little Engine That Could. They're (screw)-ups, but they get really heroic at the end." I'm gonna have to go kick him in his arrogant pompous ass.
What a freaking idiot.

you guys do know that its not one person who voices both robots right?
Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind SpongeBob SquarePants, voices Skids.
and i dont understand why people are makin such a fuss about there being racism in the movie. obviously the two actors that did the voices for the robots werent worrying about that, and they were black and white. people are just looking into it too much. but once movies first come out everyone becomes a critic.......

first of all. almost every poor review ive seen has been from a reviewer that didn't like the first one. right off the bat, biased review. i personally enjoyed the movie more so than the first one. i thought it was a great experience. all i wanted more was a little extra face time with a few of the transformers (arcee, sideswipe, jolt, and even sideways). other than that it really won me over for best action movie of the year. i understood the story, and not once was i bored. in my opinion, the acting in the movie was underrated. yeah, they were a few corny quotes from the old cartoon. so what. and about this whole stereotyping BS. they were based upon the children's fisher price transformers go bots. one had a gold tooth and they both couldnt read. apparently black people are the only group of people that cant read. the critics who are saying the twins represent a black stereotype are literally ignorant. skids and mudflap picked up their accents and behaviors from the world wide web just like prime explained in the first one about jazz. they arent black or white... they are fucking robots. YOU PEOPLE are unbelievable. all in all, very enjoyable movie, fox is hotter than ever, the cars are sick, explosions are amazing, i must be racist just like michael bay, paramount pictures, and go bots mudflap and skids! i accidentally said YOU PEOPLE.

Yes, they are robots. Its called anthropomorphism, dumbass.
Lemme guess, you couldn't see what the big deal was about Jar Jar Binks either.
Because hey, he's an alien, right?
So if I write a story with a character who speaks in ebonics and says he can't read, it's okay so long as he's a robot, or a talking fish, or a hamster with a gold fucking chain?
You also called them "go bots." Nice.
