First Trailer for Richard Kelly's 'The Box'

Our good friends (and partners) over at Moviefone have just debuted the first trailer for Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales) much-anticipated freaky little sci-fi thriller The Box, starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella. Due in theaters on October 30th (just in time for Halloween), the film follows the story of a couple who receive a mysterious box that grants them one million dollars, but with one catch: once they open the box, a person who they do not know will die. Pretty catchy premise and based on the trailer alone, the movie definitely looks to bring the thriller-ish vibes. I've always loved the look of Kelly's films, and The Box is no exception (something about it -- the cold, stark wintry chill, perhaps -- reminded me of The Shining). Perhaps a more commercial tale will help heal Kelly's former box office woes. He's a darn good filmmaker, and so I hope that's the case here.
Check out the trailer after the jump (or in HD over on Moviefone) and let us know what you think.

Frank Langella looks & sounds perfectly creepy but the rest of the trailer reminds me of the boring recent work of M Night Shamalayan.
I'll be in the theater to see it eventually with very tempered expectations.
Am I the only one who thinks Kelly seems to have tripped into making one excellent movie (which is just a collage of craziness & ambiguity that people have filled in thier minds as genius) but doesn't look like his career overall will go anywhere useful?

I'm hoping he's capable of more than Donnie Darko. It was good and I'd like to see just as much effort and inspiration in more of his work.

Completely agree with everything you said. I'm sure I'll see this, but I'm not going to mark my calendar for it.

I'm excited for it... but the music near the end of the trailer made it seem too much like a run-of-the-mill action flick.
Not liking that.

I'll give it a shot. Looks entertaining, though not particularly creepy or clever.
I was enjoying the trailer well enough until someone decided to drop in the theme from the Saw movies.... ugh.
Did they think we wouldn't notice??

I've heard it in a lot of trailers and several movies not called SAW (Though it was in Saw first, of course). I would be OK with hearing it in every trailer for the rest of my life because it's simply awesome. How many modern composed songs can you say that about? I would love to hear Hedwig's theme in every movie trailer as well... why not, if "Just Dance" (Lady GaGa) is being licensed to everyone with cash?

you're right. The theme is quite good, but it wears thin after five (soon six) Saw movies and then several other films too.
Would you want to hear this theme for Wolverine, Terminator, Star Trek or Transformers? I just want them to let it go for awhile, then bring it back a few years from now. You know... "what's old is new again" ?
Could you imagine the theme from Star Wars being used for movies that have nothing to do with galaxies far, far away?

Interesting premise, but the generic trailer undermines it.

This has already been filmed once before, on the surprisingly good 1985 revival of "The Twilight Zone." Mare Winningham played the woman. It was also around twelve minutes long.

I interested how much the story has been expanded. The original had 3 characters and concluded in under 30 mins. My interest is peaked.

Oh yeah. Looks like a good expansion of the premise. This is the episode that I most remember from that revival & it looks like I might not be alone.

I saw the Twilight Zone episode once when I was little and it has stuck with me ever since. I am excited to see the story fleshed out into a feature length movie. Hope it is at least as good as Donnie Darko.
