Check Out Some Red-Banded Fun From 'The Ugly Truth'
Filed under: Comedy, Romance, Sony, Fandom, Newsstand, NSFW, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

First off, I should be fair and post a classy publicity still that's fair to Katherine Heigl, but I feel the girls need something to balance out this week's Megan Fox overload. So, here's a solo Gerard Butler. Pretend he's holding that heart out while saying "I could never love Optimus Prime or Megan Fox as much as I love you." (Not that I'm implying Transformers is just for the boys. I'd never do that. If you like, you can reverse it to have him begging for you to love him more than Shia LaBeouf and Optimus.)
If you want to hold onto that lovey-dovey image, you might not want to watch this Red-Band clip from The Ugly Truth. But if you're feeling in the mood for some raunchy, naughty talk from Butler (be sure to listen for a slip of that Scottish accent), then go right ahead and click. In this very NSFW clip, Butler's boorish Mike offers Heigl's highstrung Abby some helpful tips on how to really attract and please a man. Surprise! It's all cosmetic, ranging from short skirts to push up bras, and just what she can do with her ponytail. Could all this R-rated dialogue mean The Ugly Truth is destined to be July's Hangover? Or will the romance drive away the ones looking for raunch?
As I wait for your comments (please come back to post one after you watch the clip) I'm off to go hate on myself because I fail all of The Ugly Truth rules. I live in jeans and a ponytail ... oh, who am I kidding. I've gone beyond Heigl's "comfort and efficiency" into fashion evocative of Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. Butler will never love me. I might as well die.

Personally, I had absolutely no interest in this movie when it was announced. (Of course I would have seen it anyway-it's got Gerard Butler! What'm I crazy?) But I digress. The point is every clip or trailer I see makes me want to see it more and more. Perhaps I'm being naive but this does not look like your standard rom-com. While, as far as I can tell, the "surprising result" at the end of this will still surprise no one, the journey will still be a helluva fun ride. Who cares if this is or isn't the way men really think? It's funny!
I'm thrilled that thus far Sony hasn't seen fit to water this down and it is, in fact, a "hard R". I wish producers/directors would stop insisting he use an American accent (in this day and age, a person can live in the US and be FROM anywhere w/out having to create an elaborate backstory) but I'm up for watching Butler's mouth mangle the phonebook. So count me in!

Only a woman could come up with that line. Men have been telling women what they really think about forever, but for some reason you all believe that its just an act and we secretly sit at home writing poetry and daydreaming about sunsets. If you don't realize it by now you probably never will, but yes, the way Butler is talking is EXACTLY how EVERY man thinks. We are visual, put it on display if you want us to notice you. No guy ever saw a woman and said "she looks sensitive and caring. I'd like to ask her out" :)

Sorry, Kevin I guess I didn't make myself clear. I've been reading quite a few comments all over the web regarding this movie and there seems to be a recurring theme that women should not support male stereotypes any more than they should female. The point I was trying to make was "who cares? it's funny!" One of the reasons it's funny, is that it's true. Not only that, women wrote the script.
Like the writers, I'm well aware that stereotypes and cliches surrounding men's behavior always have at least a partial ring of truth to them and I don't delude myself otherwise. The poetry writers and dreamers of sunsets are the exceptions that prove the rule.

I am usually an up-tight chick who is not into raunchiness and vulgarity. But this movie intrigues me enough to make me want to go see it. I'll leave my prudery at home this time and have myself lost in the sight and sound (and fury?) of the battle of the "sexes" (wink wink).
By the way, Shia LaBeouf looks like a young Gerard Butler, somewhere around the eyes and chin.... Hmmm....

Look, Gerard Butler has a heart on for you!
Just seeing if it works in real life like it does in the movies. No? Well ok. I rest my case.

This still doesn't have me convinced. Yes, it seems raunchy, but isn't the point to be funny AND raunchy? Gerard is a fine lead man, but I don't know if he is in any way funny. Too bad Ryan Reynolds wasn't available...

Yes, Gerard Butler is funny. See some of his interviews! I've been looking forward to this movie for several months. It looks funny and different from the run of the mill romantic movies. I think that Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler are great together. Excellent casting.

I've been very negative on this film since the early days of its conception. I've ragged on it in every way imaginable. While I thought the first trailer/clips were cute, they really just solidified my opinion that it was going to be another 27 dresses kind of thing. The only thing I found interesting was the character of Mike. Now, this trailer has me sitting up and saying, hey, maybe I won't be wasting my movie money just to see Gerard Butler, maybe there is actually something more here....

Despite appealing stars, I have NO interest in paying $11 at my local gigantaplex to see this. It will hit OnDemand before Christmas, I can wait.

cablebfg, Ryan Reynolds is a fine comedian but of a different breed of comedians from Gerard Butler's. Reynolds could easily turn himself into a Hugh Grant-ish comedian, stuttering, nervous and sweaty-palmed, with a tendency for fist fights over girls. In my opinion, he is definitely not a right choice for the role of Mike Chadway in The Ugly Truth.
Butler as a comedian, on the other hand, exhibits overbearing confidence in male experience this role demands, perceived or actual. He seems to brilliantly mix it in with appropriate doses of male puerile mischievousness. I think Butler is the pairfect choice for this role.

This doesn't need to be a men v. women thang but sorry Kevin I'm going on a limb and betting that (most) women don't believe men "secretly sit at home writing poetry and daydreaming about sunsets." Call it the fact that I'm a woman & I actually know what women think & talk about or just the fact that that's, well, stupid. I just don't know women who think that. This in fact is the reason I kind of don't get the point of this movie. Women know this stuff: look taller, thinner, younger, act dumber, spend all your money on clothes you can't wear to work, don't talk about anything real (like less pay - same job), don't have a cat for a pet, & don't talk about your job. Look, obviously it's just a movie & it's meant to be funny (I laughed at parts of the trailer). . . but I don't think I'm into spending $11 to watch a personification of this part of every day life.
That's just me though. It'll probably sell as 'counter marketing' against the blockbuster summer stuff. "The Proposal" did well.

My girlfriend and I both saw an early screening about 3 months ago in Dallas, TX. It was horrendous. Straight-to-video horrendous. Unless there were massive rewrites, reshoots, etc...I wouldn't recommend this movie to my worst enemy. They rounded up a focus group afterward, and picked about the two stupidest 18 year old girls in the theater once they saw how excited they were. I'm no movie snob- I saw Transformers 2 this wknd. I'm also no movie moron- I'm a student of Kubrick, Hitchcock, the good stuff.
Please, do yourself a favor, and don't watch this trainwreck. The "When Harry Met Sally" rip off in the restaurant alone made me want to get up and leave, but I stayed so I could let the filmmakers have it in my written comments. It was just...bad. Not funny, not anything really.
Here's what I'd guess the filmmakers are banking on: OMG Butler is soooo uncalled for!!!!
