Flickchart: Easily the Coolest Movie Site of the Year
Filed under: Fandom, Film Blog Group Hug, Lists, Best/Worst

Dictionary.com defines "addiction" as "the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice," and I offer the definition of such a basic word to illustrate a point: I am addicted to Flickchart.com. Tickled, fascinated, enamored, and addicted. It's a remarkably simple idea: You log in and you're offered two films. You pick which one you like more. (There's also a "haven't seen it" option, so be honest!) Then you repeat that process over and over for three hours until you realize it's 4am but you want to vote on just a few ... more ... pairs...
Flickchart is still in its beta mode, but it looks like the plan is to open the doors wide in mid-July. But what's coolest about the site is not the fun of picking your favorite movies ... it actually collates all your choices into one massive and mathematically unimpeachable list of YOUR favorite films. My advice is to pick the flick you like more, not the one you think is more reputable. Gone with the Wind is great, obviously, but Die Hard gets my vote. Also fun: You can post comments on specific matchups, as I did last night when greeted by a choice between Catwoman and Double Team. (Halle got the vote for being pretty.)
After the jump I've included a nifty little trailer that illustrates how Flickchart works (and a few cool notes), but of course you should visit the website and nose around a bit. Membership is currently accessible by invitation only, but it seems like they'll be opening the doors soon. Aw, what the heck? The Flickchart fellas say "Any friend of Cinematical is a friend of ours, so click right here to bypass the invitation process and log right in! Enjoy! (Add me as a Flickchart friend if you like: scottEweinberg. Just like on the Twitter.)
Flickchart co-founder Nathan Chase adds a few tidbits:
- You can see, out of the movies you mark as "haven't seen," which ones are the highest ranked by Flickchart users, which gives you some great recommendations when you need a new movie to watch.
- In addition to your main list, you can also see your top 1980's movies, top horror movies, or any other year, decade, or genre -- we'll be adding "by director" and "by actor" soon, too!
- You can share your matchups on social networks - currently at FriendFeed (and soon on Twitter and Facebook).
- We'll have Netflix queue integration hopefully before we launch, so you can auto-add movies you come across. Direct to your queue!
- You can watch movie trailers as you rank to help remind you of the films and help you make your voting / watching decisions.
How are the films added to your database? Do you have a feed, or do you have a bunch of movie freaks who comb IMDb by year, franchise, genre, director, etc.?
Nathan: We're using a combination of public sources (like DBpedia and Freebase) and supplementing with some privately acquired data, and some manual entry of titles and information. We'll be adding more titles as we get closer to our public launch (right now we have about 10,000 in our database). Our initial goal is to have all U.S. theater-released films, and then we'll move on to foreign, anime, and other requested titles.
What are some of your favorite movie sites? (No, it doesn't have to be any specific blog.)
Nathan: We like...
- Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes for finding critical reviews on film, although they use percentages - so how do you know which 74% movie is the better movie? ;)
- Ain't It Cool News has great scoops.
- io9, Cinematical, and /Film for excellent articles.
- IMDb and AllMovieGuide are unmatched for detailed information.
- and The Numbers and Cin-o-matic for cool box office and movie stats.
Flickchart aims to cover both, and it does so rather efficiently, but if you had to pick one: Is it a great resource to find a few good movies -- OR -- is it a place for movie geeks to sit and chat?
Nathan: Our hope is that it's a great debate starter - for your own personal choices, and for you and your friends to discuss the films' merits against each other. The discovery of great movies is an excellent byproduct of our ranking method, and ultimately, we hope Flickchart can be known for our definitive lists. When you think of the "Best Movies Of All Time", we want Flickchart's to be the first place to look. That's probably not picking one over the other very well, is it? :)
(Final word: Big thanks to @BrianTruitt for throwing me the Flickchart invitation last night!)

And then you encounter something where you have to sit back and think....which is better? Alien or Godfather II?
Gack.
In a really, really good way.

More Preston Sturges would be beautiful. Titles like "Sullivan's Travels", 'Unfaithfully Yours", "The Lady Eve" and "Hail, the Conquering Hero!" would be great additions.

Eventually, I would love to see the "Exploitation" genre represented. I'm currently working through the 70s and would like to rank the films of Jack Hill, Russ Meyer, Cirio Santiago etc.
Thanks!

I forsee many wasted hours on this site, but maybe I'll pinpoint what my favorite movies actually are.

I've been on it since last night. It's addictive trying to rank my favorite movies ever. And it works great on my iPhone too so that's not helping me get off the site anytime soon.
One glaring omission from the site is "Dr. Strangelove", which is missing from sitting somewhere in my top 20.

No wonder it takes you until 4 am to rate a few movies -- the site is reeaally slow…! ;)
Seriously, loading up new movie posters takes way too long, I hope they'll be able to optimize that before the "public" launch…!?
Other than that it's nice and fun…

I should have mentioned this in my article (and I may go add it now) -- but Flickchart is still in beta mode -- which means it's alllmost done, but technically still a work in progress.
I was on the site for several hours last night and it was easily twice as speedy. That *will* improve, but thanks for bringing it up!

Uhm, here's a little addendum though: it seems that no matter which poster I click on to choose it as a favourite the site still saves both offered movies in my favourites list…!? What's up with that…?! Why would the movie I dismissed be listed as one of my favourites…?!
Maybe I'm not getting the concept, but it just doesn't make sense…

It works like this: If your first vote is E.T vs. Tron, and you (smartly) vote for E.T. -- then technically (since you've seen both) E.T would be #1 and Tron would be #2.
Just extrapolate that to your entire list and you'll see how it makes sense. Every film you vote for AND against gets measured into the list.
Short answer: Do a lot more voting!

I agree that it's extremely slow right now, 1:30-2 minutes just to log in and get to the next screen.
The idea (I think I read about this and forgot to click somewhere, maybe Lifehacker) is cool. Though I don't really NEED any more suggestions for what to watch (My Queue is maxed out big time), it should be fun to rank the few I've seen.
Great, thanks Scott, more ways for me to waste time!! ;E

Def addicting - and a promising idea.
Loading time is a huge problem and will make anyone who's not a huge movie nerd give up.
I would suggest these things:
a)the ability to start trying the service before becoming a member... once you start its def addicting enough that you would sign up so your picks would be stored
b)a nything you could do to help this slow load issue... whether its taking a more graphics-free approach... text-only? I dunno... whatever it is - I have to say I would prefer just seeing the names of the movie over having this slick graphic site layout.
c) the ability to step outside of the regular ranking zone and say... ONLY rank within the top 20 picks. When I see Ghostbusters at 20 and Sideways at 10, I feel over-eager to say that Ghostbusters is a million times better than Sideways.
Anyway - great site - def has a future. Handle it well!

Eric -
Thanks for the comments. Here are my best answers...currently:
a) That's actually how we started out, before we added our "closed beta" splash page. Once we officially open up the site, you'll hit flickchart.com, get a (hopefully) awesome matchup, and (hopefully) never look back.
b) I just made a chance in the database that's taken the average matchup time from around 12-15 seconds to more like 4. I have more optimizations to go.
c) Right on, glad you found it. The filters are kinda subtle... not everyone notices them.
Thanks for the compliment. We've been improving at a decent pace so far, and we'll keep it up until we run out of ideas (and ideas are unfortunately not the hard part).

*chance = change, although technically doing it on the live site with a couple hundred users counts as both. :)

To Jeremy -
Thanks for responding...
regarding B:
I keep having an issue where I take a break and go to another site/movie/whatever for 20-30 minutes and return to the Flickchart tab and the site freezes up on me (indefinitely)... I end up having to redirect and come back only to wait again for everything to load up again (takes over 2 minutes).
Good thing is - it always brings me straight back to the voting process. [my set up is: mac pro/intel/quad core/firefox]
Very fun site though...
My biggest compliment is that this algorithm seems to be more to my liking then Netflix's rating system. Mainly because it is entirely based on my preferences - and not (with Netflix) based on "Users like me"... wtf does that mean anyway?
Hope you all the best - I also want to warn you that netflix/google monster might want to steal/buy/legally reproduce this site's infrastructure - so either let it loose now with good PR or prepare a good sale. Good luck!

Looks like 2009 is a bit lite... which is really an understatement. I'm getting the same handful of clicks to compare over and over. Yes, UP is better than Star Trek and Watchmen. I know, I know. Give me something else, heh. Otherwise digging the obscure stuff by genres.
