Monday Night Poll: Why Did You See 'Transformers 2'?
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Fandom, Dreamworks, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Polls
The numbers are in. Moviegoers worldwide voted with their hard-earned dollars (and euros and other monetary currencies) and elected to go see Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Box office receipts placed the sequel at the top of this year's heap o' blockbusters, and by the time all is said and done, the film could rank among the top box office earners of all time. But why did so many people go buy tickets? Why did you?
As pointed out by Eugene Novikov, Transformers 2 "received the most hysterically negative reviews of 2009." Only 21% of reviews by critics at Rotten Tomatoes were positive. (Surprisingly, it fared better at the pickier MetaCritic, with 36% positive.) Eugene acknowledged that it's the kind of movie that defines "critic-proof." So, obviously, critical opinion had no bearing on the box office. Why did this movie hit so big? In his analysis, industry observer David Poland felt that producer Don Murphy and director Michael Bay should be celebrated, the former "for truly believing in this concept being a big home run" and the latter "for understanding the images that will draw massive numbers of people based on 2 minutes or less of images." So was it all about the concept and the trailers?
Marketing obviously plays a huge role in determining how a movie opens, as does, to a somewhat lesser extent, the cast and director. But what was it about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen that pushed your button(s), elevating it to "must see" status? Take our poll and let us know!

It was 11:00pm and was drinking and other shannanigans with diehard fanboys of Transformers and we decided "why not". ended up being wayyy too many people for the midnight. I remember vividly when before the start came up I quoted "What if this sucks?" and sure enough it was worse than finding a baby in several different trash bins. But I will let it have its day on Blu-Ray for 2 1/2 hrs. I also found myself staring at Megen Foxs tits than the robots going at it in the back. (then again it was the only time the camera stood still)

It's pretty obvious. People liked the first movie because it had giant robots fighting in cool locations. It appears part 2 had even more giant robots fighting in even cooler locations. You think the guy who says "Woot, robot fights!" is going to read the New Yorker's reviews before he goes to see it?
People like seeing a mindless action movie with cool effects. I don't think any summer blockbuster is ever particularly critically successful, with notable exceptions like Dark Knight. Why would TF2 be any different?
Sad to say, you could take Bay's name off the movie and watch that RT score go up 20-30%. Movie fans just hate the guy. But he knows what the general public likes.

Justin Harris, you don't seriously believe that 'movie fans just love to hate on Michael Bay' crap, do you? People hate Michael Bay because of the movies he makes. This would have received poor reviews from any director because it's an illogical, incompetent and boring mess.

I really do believe that Bay gets an undue amount of shit for his movies.
For the record, I haven't seen the movie as I didn't care for Transformers 1. I found just about every character in it to be annoying and unlikable and the action scenes weren't enough to make up for that.
But for the most part, Bay makes really fun action flicks. The Rock is an all time classic in the action genre, same with Bad Boys 2.
Pearl Harbor and Armageddon were both fun actioners, and I've never seen The Island. You could name half a dozen directors in the genre who are making bad movies, but none of them catch as much shit as Bay.
Basically, he gets shit because he's incredibly successful. Nobody will mock a director who is just getting by, but it seems to offend people personally that people like summer action movies and that Bay is good at making them.

This is the first movie of the so-called Summer season that I have gone out of my way to see on opening day. I despise his previous movies except for Bad Boys (haven't seen BB2 or Island) but I still thought it was near genius to have him direct a literal commercial for toys. I don't know anyone that thought his Got Milk commercial wasn't brilliant. I was so pleased with Transformers, although a blue sky on Mars drove me nuts. The sequel was even better, in that it was insane to think that you could walk out of the Smithsonian and into the desert. But also that giant robots fought each other for several minutes, that's what we paid to see. It's kind of like watching movies that suck but are fun to watch (Plan 9, Reefer Madness, Troll 2, Twins), although there are gaping logic holes it doesn't affect how much fun the movie experience is.

I didn't see Transformers 2. I absolutely refuse to pay any more money to Michael Bay...and here's why:
I used to be a Bay apologist to an extent. I figured that, no matter how stupid the movies were, they would have some great action. After all, Bad Boy and The Rock are really cool action flicks, right?
Well, Armageddon has good action, but the characters are cardboard and the acting/directing is WAY over the top. Pearl Harbor took a horrible event in American history and turned it into a popcorn flick. (Imagine if they did that with 9/11...War Of The Worlds notwithstanding.) Bad Boys II took characters that we kinda liked and turned them into complete assholes. It was, quite possibly, the most mean-spirited action movie in recent memory. It took the fun of the first movie and pounded it into the ground.
Then came the cinematic abortion that was The Island. There was nothing good about that movie beyond Scarlet Johansson in a tight, white uniform. Everything was bad. It was a two hour commercial for about 15 different products. An absolute insult to its audience.
Transformers was his third best movie and it's a load of crap. Prime saying, "My bad"? Bumblebee peeing on John Turturro? Michael Bay peed on my childhood. There was NO story at all. It was just a bunch of piles of broken glass going at each other. But then you couldn't even tell what those piles were doing because the camera was constantly moving in WAY too close! Bay has COMPLETELY forgotten how to shoot an action scene! He thinks it's enough to just have two big, metal behemoths bang into each other. And, sadly, it appears to be.
So, yes. I refuse to pay to see Transformers 2. Michael Bay should stay true to his word of 10 seconds and stop making terrible summer action movies. There's a way to make them good, but he has lowered the bar so much that no one wants to make them even decent. Intelligence has left the theatre and it's his fault. He is Uwe Boll with a budget.

Peeing on your childhood? have you ever rewatched some of the old cartoons. The acting is oscar material by comparison

I can get behind an occassional mindless action flick, but Bay's problem is he's making a career of mind-insulting flicks.
I agree with your analysis - he's gone from "The Rock" to gravel or worse. Now he's like the Ed Wood of action. The scripts and acting in his films are dreck. I hope his "stars" are getting a % of the films, because they surely aren't doing any career-enhancing material

And, ya know, I don't even have any thing against the actors. I don't judge them by their acting in these movies because they're given nothing to do except react to blue screens. I actually LIKE Shia LeBeouf. (I can't spell his name, but I think he's cool.) It's like judging someone because of a Star Wars prequel...except Ewen McGregor was actually given somewhat of a character to portray.
And, no, I haven't watched the cartoon lately. But that's not what matters here. It's my memory of the show and how much fun I had playing with the toys. And the movie kinda screwed those memories.
TRANSFORMERS AREN'T PETS!!!

I really enjoyed the first, really enjoy seeing movies at Imax, really enjoy watching giant robots fight and really enjoy watching Megan Fox being Megan Fox.
TF2 offered a pretty potent cocktail of those elements so I went and saw it. It wasn't as good as the first, but it was still great fun.

I watched the movie because i thought it was just going to dumb Michael bay fun but instead i was kinda bored with the movie and the second reason i saw it was because initially David Chen on the SlashFilmCast talked about how bad it was and i was like how can this movie be worse the first in terms of plot and story and then the days following the internet was buzzing including this site about these racist stereotype characters and i had to know what stereotypes and how bad (and they were really bad and i wasn't really offended because of racial aspects to the characters more because in a movie in 2009 we still have lame one dimensional and to me it came off like "Fuck You, I Bet They'll Eat It Up" to the audience and their intelligence). I'm glad i didn't go to the midnight screening and paid full price for this movie and instead saw it for half price at afternoon matinee last Thursday, but with the crowd I did see it with made sad because they would clap and cheers every five minutes in the fight scenes and gasp in awe when (Spoiler Alert) Optimus Prime is killed halfway through the movie in the forest fight scene, which the movie hadn't earned that emotional moment. In Closing the movie is okay if you don't pay full price and it a an okay movie to kill time with.
Tanget: I liked the blunt foreshadowing in the movie where optimus prime talks sam in a cemetery, real subtle guys
