Jason Lee Reunites with Kevin Smith!
It sounded promising when Jason Lee was set to get Thicker back in 2008. Perhaps we'd finally get another taste at the old Lee, the one that made every Kevin Smith movie he graced all the tastier, especially when he'd rant away with all of his comedic snarkiness. He may have left that film, but Lee found an even better project to fill his now Earl-free days. Variety reports that he, along with Michelle Trachtenberg, have signed on for roles in A Couple of Dicks -- Kevin Smith's first project not written by his own pen.The film, which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, focuses on two cops who search for a stolen baseball card, rescue a sexy Mexican woman, and face gangsters. With the buddy cop roles long-filled, Lee won't have much face time, but hopefully it will be quality face time. While Trachtenberg plays Willis' daughter, Lee will play her stepfather.
At least it's something. Not a lot, but a hell of a lot more interesting that the family fare that Lee keeps doing. That being said, and even loving Willis' classic cop ways, I wish Lee was taking the role. Wouldn't he make an excellent gruff detective? (If he can't be the new Fletch, he could at least get a blockbuster buddy cop film! Willis and Morgan are already a far cry from the originally cast Robin Williams and James Gandolfini.)
But maybe better fare is on the horizon. What sort of starring role would you like to see Jason Lee take on?

The afore-mentioned Fletch, a film where he is constantly running from bees the entire film, Ant-Man, a random movie where he overdubs all of Seth Rogen's lines, Mr. Limpet, an old shoe in Disney's new movie "Bolo and Shoe Come Out of the Closet", Colonel Sanders, or a reboot of "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai" possibly as Bonzai's son breaking into the 9th or 10th dimension and sporting a much less gay nickname would all be acceptable roles for him to take... in my opinion.

Yes, Stan! Yes, we do need to see more of him! Earl was a great show, and Jason Lee is awesome. I'm going to really miss the show, but I hope he gets some good roles now. As the quirky sidekick, Wexler. ("Hey how do you know *he's" not the sidekick?") ;-)

I have to say I prefer Lee as the quirky side character over the main character any day of the week.

Just wanted to add that Wexler is right. Jason Lee's best roles were as the best buddy or part of an ensemble cast. But whenever he plays the leading man, the movie itself is usually awful, or just blandly okay.
Some of his best roles: Banky in Chasing Amy and Skip in Mumford may have been the best, and totally different from one another. I also liked him as Puggy in Big Trouble, Jeff Bebe in Almost Famous, Azrael in Dogma.
But his starring roles were in A Guy Thing, which was just okay. Stealing Harvard was just plain awful. He was pretty bland in both. I think the problem is the writing - apparently leading men in comedies need to be boring and have no personality. Too bad.
Oh, forgot one of his very best roles: Earl Hickey. He was fantastic as Earl, and I think it's ridiculous that he never won an Emmy, let alone got nominated for one!
