Atari Video Game 'Asteroids' Gets the Big Screen Treatment
Filed under: Fandom, Newsstand
Hopefully some of you are old enough to remember the classic Atari video game Asteroids, where the object of the game was to navigate this space ship through an asteroid field and shoot down whatever crazy flying object got in the way. That was it -- no storyline, no insane graphics -- just a bunch of glowing dots on a screen. Obviously the cinematic possibilities are endless (ahem, sarcasm), and so that's why there was a four-studio bidding war (!) for the film rights. Yup, four studios fought to win the film rights for Asteroids. That's where it's at right now in Hollywood ...Read the rest at SciFi Squad

Remember when Hollywood could blow you away with fresh and original ideas that kept you clambering for more? (Yeah, me neither)

This probably would have been better 25 years ago... but it might be kind of cool though. Glad it's just retro instead of another horror remake!

That rocks! Asteroids is one of my all time favorite games. It kept me in suspense trying to destroy all those asteroids. Sure the grafics were terrible by today's standard. But the simplicity of it all was the appeal. I can't imagine what studio, writers, director could come up with for a story. I guess trying to the galaxy/world by stoping asteroids from destroying the said world (not necessarily has to be earth though). That's my two cents.

This would be awesome if every audience member got a controller, and the film averaged the inputs in order to control the little triangular ship. Or maybe some of the audience could control the asteroids instead of the ship! Also, we'll need new Asteroids t-shirts.

Jesus christ.......the only way this could be a worse idea is if they let Uwe Boll direct it. If I want to see a movie based on something with no story and with no redeeming value whatsoever I'll go rent Twilight.

*Somewhere in Hollywood* "Ok stop me if you've heard this... Check it out... So there's like these asteriods heading for Earth, and we got to get a guy up there to blow the shit out of these asteroids. So we get Bruce Willis... and his asteroid blowing up team with Ben Affleck, Owen Wilson, Dude from the Green Mile, yo pass me that bowl of cocaine, Dude from Fargo, and the other dude from Fargo!!! We'll base it off of this ancient video game and we get Michael Bay to direct! We can't go wrong! Are you listening to me woman??? Here take a hit! Be somebody baby!"
