The Game to Play B.A. Baracus in 'A-Team'?
Filed under: Action, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, 20th Century Fox
Set the bar low enough, and it can only be exceeded. That's how I feel about the upcoming big-screen version of The A-Team, a 80s television series entirely beholden to the staid formula of the day and ripe for reinvention. I didn't hate the series so much as I found it routinely mediocre. My colleague Monika Bartyzel loved the series as a kid, yet still questioned the casting choices that were being entertained: Liam Neeson as Hannibal? Bradley Cooper as Face? Adding fuel to the fire, rapper The Game is being considered to play the role of B.A. Baracus, according to blackfilm.com, which quotes "a very highly reliable source in the entertainment industry."
For me, the only thing that made The A-Team watchable was the bantering between the characters, and the choices so far all indicate that director Joe Carnahan is aiming for a more straightforward action picture, based on a script by Wanted's Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. Which is crazy, like moving Miami Vice to Seattle or transforming the lead character in Get Smart into a fairly bland, somewhat competent secret agent. (Even though the latter still made money.)
The mistake would be in confusing brand recognition with brand loyalty. If you're promising fans of the TV show that you're going to deliver the same thing, only bigger and better, then you damn well better deliver something in the same spirit. I haven't seen The Game's work as an actor (Waist Deep, Street Kings) yet; is he any good? If this rumor is true, could he wear the mohawk of the immortal Mr. T?

Oh PLEASE no!!! (Mediocre musicians should keep doing mediocre music, NOT A-list movies!)
Why not LL Cool J or Ving Rhames?

Rappers only play caricatures, but I guess he did that well. If there is such a thing.

His performance as 'Big Meat' in Waist Deep left something to be desired... I wouldn't have high hopes for the movie just based on the casting.

I saw Street Kings but I don't remember Mr. The Game's perfomance. Why not go with a unknown who can act and has some charisma.

Terrible choice. I agree, that Ving Rhames or LL Cool J might work. Or how about Cuba Gooding Jr.? Ice Cube perhaps. Michael Clarke Duncan has the kind of physical presence that B.A. should have.
Jim Carrey would make a great Murdoch. I know Dwight Schultz in person and Carrey is the only actor besides Dwight who I think would be perfect for the part. Someone suggested Steve Buscemi who feels right but might be too old.
Bradley Cooper as Faceman? Horrible! I don't think he can pull it off. Users on imdb have suggested Aaron Eckhardt and Nathan Fillion - and I must say, both would be much better choices than Cooper! Another suggestion I heard: Josh Holloway (Sawyer on "Lost"): and I'd say he'd be the perfect con man that Face was if they gave him a haircut.
And Liam Neeson for Hannibal? Well, he doesn't "feel" like the perfect choice but at least he is a suberb actor! George Clooney would be perfect if he were older, same as Bruce Willis. Leslie Nielsen looks right but is too old by now.

I think if they really want to give this movie some punch they should get Mike Tyson to be B.A. Or if they wanted someone with some acting credentials and some verbal punch I suggest Anthony Anderson. There are few people in Hollywood who can match A.A. when it comes to using the language of the streets.

God, this is so f'ing stupid. Did Common say no or something, because he'd be the perfect choice. And since Carnahan and Common collaborated on Smokin' Aces it would be a natural fit. Jeez this movie is gonna suck.
