Terrific Trailers: Miami Vice

Michael Mann's latest crime opus has already hit theaters, and like most of his devoted fans, I was there opening day. Granted, my desire to be first in line for Public Enemies mainly had to do with my preoccupation with pretty boys in nice suits, but trust me, there were some loftier ideals at work. One of the reasons I love Mann's films is that he finds new ways to tell relatively traditional stories...which brings me to Miami Vice. Vice definitely wasn't one of Mann's most popular films, but I always defend this flick, and here's why: growing up, I watched Miami Vice, and I might have loved it, but even at the tender age of 10 I knew it was kind of silly. I had always wondered what the series would have looked like if the show had a little less cheap humor about Crockett and his alligator and a little more 'dignity' -- fast forward to 2006, and that's exactly what Mann did.
Gone were the over the top white suits and wise cracks (I mean, thank god I didn't have to watch Colin Farrell yucking it up with 'Elvis'), and instead, Mann replaced them with a darker, meaner, and (dare I say it?) more realistic Miami Vice. But just because Mann brought Vice into the present, didn't mean that those traditional touches were gone, and the teaser was proof. That first trailer had it all -- the music perfectly timed with every shotgun pump, speedboats, helicopters, guns and hot girls...and you can't get more Miami Vice than that.

I couldn't finish it, it was just so boring. It was like, boats, cars, fast drone talking, explosions, boats, girls, boats, drugs, boats, boats, and boats. I love Michael Mann to death and I'm going to give this movie another try but seriously. Miami Vice was a lame movie.

What alot of people forget is that prior to 1984, Miami was considered a 'low rent' old folks home. Miami Vice introduced a nation to the latin culture and it's darker underbelly of poverty and the emerging crime wave fueled by the drug trade. Sure it was cheesy, over the top, and down right stupid at times. Hollywierd has never allowed the truth to get in the way of making money.
Michael Mann took this movie and made it grittier, meaner, and showed how the drug trade has evolved into a truely global business that is capable of anything. He had to hold back in some areas to keep it from being a "Drug running 101" class. In other areas he was frighteningly accurate. This was a very good movie, for alot of different reasons...

I like this movie too. Maybe I need to watch it again. I do know, listening to Mann's commentary added to my appreciation for the flick. Is it a great movie? No, but there's not very many GREAT movies. Few and far between, really.

I had a special place for this trailer, because it was the first thing I ever saw on a digital screen, and I was blown away. This still remains as one of my favorite trailers of recent years, it was well-paced, well-timed, and really captured Mann's very modern, digital style.
Of course, the movie was a bit of a letdown, but I still thought it was okay.

Miami Vice was the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen coming from Michael Mann. A total career low. Accuracy and attention to detail always great, but at the expense of the ingredients that keep audiences interested. What a bore.
