'The Ugly Truth' of Vibrating Underwear
Filed under: Comedy, Romance, Trailers and Clips
I now take back any defense I gave Katherine Heigl for her comments about Knocked Up. I was already on my way there when I heard about The Ugly Truth and its premise where a smart and successful woman turns to a chauvinist to learn about nabbing her beau. I hit the brink with the second trailer where she actually tries to deep throat a hot dog and stick out her chest to get the guy, while he says every pervish thing he can think of. And now ... now there's vibrating underwear. In the clip after the jump, so appropriately coming to us from Coming Soon, Heigl's character gets a little vibrating gift as she gets ready for a date. She decides to put on the panty rocket and then gets whisked off on a half-date/half-business meeting. At no time does she decide to excuse herself to take off these things, and in fact, gets into some hot trouble when the remote falls into the hands of a kid at the next table. Heigl channels When Harry Met Sally, poorly I might add, and Gerard Butler watches in amusement.
Heigl... How any woman who notes chauvinism in a Judd Apatow movie can then take on this schlock is beyond my comprehension. Furthermore, take away Butler's charm and put ... hmm ... let's say Steve Buscemi into the role -- is it still all romantically funny, or does it get downright creepy? Actually, now that would be a movie -- The Ugly Truth, where a romcom tries to deliver this bull pucky to audiences without a dapper leading man to make it palatable.

Give Monika a break. This is a pretty dumb looking romantic comedy, trying to be Apatow-like in pushing boundaries, but failing to actually be funny and instead comes off as sappy and a little creepy.

Monika makes valid points regarding both Heigl as well as the creep factor inherent in most of these movies. Plus, this particular movie looks absolutely awful so I would expect a review to say as much.

Lighten up! From a women's libber from way back it DOES look funny. Being uptight is not the same as being mature. If a 40-yr old male trying to get laid for the first time, three mature males with family responsibilities and commitments getting wasted in Vegas and a one-night stand turning into a lifetime commitment with a slacker can be funny, this can be funny. I just don't see why some are so offended. Could it be they sense the advice so far in the clips may be right on the money? Despite elevated principles? And that the pro bono civil rights attorney you have your eye on might respond more to your cleavage than your intellect - at least initially? LOL

"At no time does she decide to excuse herself to take off these things, and in fact, gets into some hot trouble when the remote falls into the hands of a kid at the next table."
But she does. When she first realizes what's going on, she tries to leave. She tries to get Butler's character to tell whatever it was as well, but she stumbles/moans through the information and then gets up to excuse herself.
Also, "Heigl channels When Harry Met Sally, poorly I might add" is probably a bit unfair because Sally is attempting to prove how easy it is to fake it and Heigl is attempting to not have an orgasm at the dinner table. So one of them is going for broke and the other is holding back while acting like she's not. Sure, the comparison is there, but I think it's an easy first grab but an incorrect one - entirely different intent.
In any case, the movie does look silly and idiotic beyond belief. I'm sure it's all rather predictable as well.
For my own information, "Heigl... How any woman who notes chauvinism in a Judd Apatow movie" what's that quote in relation to?

Long story short: Heigl made some comments about "Knocked Up" being sexist and now, some people don't like her very much.
I think they're right. How dare a successful woman have an opinion on anything. Seriously, who does that bitch think she is?

If you had a vibrator in your underwear, wouldn't you demand a moment to take it out BEFORE heading to the restaurant? :)
As for the Apatow/Heigl part, here: http://www.cinematical.com/2007/12/03/fan-rant-katherine-heigl-calls-knocked-up-sexist/

I imagine that taking it out would be the intelligent thing to do, but then you wouldn't have the slapstick sex joke for the movie, but more importantly, you can reason it through as well because she thinks to herself, "Hey, it'll be okay, I can just smoothly transition into work mode now because I have the remote, so I have all the control, and this won't bother me at all and it will be a normal business dinner. With that guy I think I like, and then hey, maybe fun later too!"
Besides that rationalization, there's also, "Oh shit, my boss just walked up and surprised me with a business dinner mixed with my date, what do I do? I better go right now!" and then she gets nervous and forgets about her underwear.
It's still silly, but I can see why we can assume nothing too specific about her character besides she's attempting to be adventurous and getting into hijinx because of it. On the bright side, nearly all of these movies are wastes of time.

people don't like her. It's because she badmouths EVERYTHING she's in. And what exactly makes her successful? Trashing the 1 mild-hit movie she had? It barely made 200 million in the box office, that's not much of a hit. Getting a man fired from GA so that she could make more money that she doesn't deserve? Badmouthing the writers of said show because of supposed bad storylines, storylines which BTW she ASKED FOR because of her non-existent movie career. These are all FACTS, condemned from her own mouth. She hasn't changed since Roswell and she's not going to change now.

so an actor can never take a role that run against their real life views?
i think you'd better give up the movie commentary business before you really embarrass yourself....

Not if they make a point of bashing roles that were LESS against their life views in the past.
Replaces sexism with racism here. Let's say an actor was in a movie that used mild racial humour for laughs, it was successful, and then the actor came out to badmouth the writer/director/producer/movie for being racist. Then their next film was a remake of The Birth of a Nation.
Do you not think they'd take some heat for being a hypocrite? If an actor does a movie, then they're endorsing that movie. If that movie runs against their very public life views, then that makes them a hypocrite, and they should be called out on it.

You are correct. She doesn't give a rat's ass what people think as she's amply demonstrated by co-producing this movie. The only interesting thing about Heigl is, for a while, thoughtful people thought she did care.
