Terrific Trailers: Casino Royale
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Movie Marketing, James Bond, Daniel Craig, Trailers and Clips

If the true measure of a good trailer is that it makes you want to see the movie that's being advertised, my definition of a terrific trailer is one that makes you want to see a movie again -- after you've already seen it several times. The trailer for Martin Campbell's Casino Royale fits that definition to a "T."
Granted, any trailer for a James Bond movie has the advantage of familiarity. Yet that same familiarity can breed contempt, and the last two Bond flicks with Pierce Brosnan (The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day) had soured me on the spy that I once loved. The casting of blonde, undersized Daniel Craig did not inspire much confidence. But the Casino Royale trailer really raised my expectations, and the movie itself fully delivered on its promise. I've ended up watching the movie multiple times since its release.
In retrospect, the trailer gives away bits and pieces from the entire movie, but it starts smart by spending its first thirty seconds in black and white, then shifting to color and introducing everyone we need to know, squeezing in a bit of cheesecake (Eva Green in an evening gown), a touch of beefcake (Daniel Craig emerging from the ocean), and then revving up to full-tilt action, accompanied by a jazzed-up version of the James Bond theme music. Watching the trailer reminds me of all the high points and makes we want to see it again ... right now!
After the jump: Watch the Casino Royale trailer.

Great trailer, great film. The Quantom of Solace trailer was also great, can't say the same for the film.

The CR trailer was excellent, as was the movie. The QoS trailer was good, as was the movie. I'm hoping the next movie is more on par with CR, but it does seem the trailer is a good indication of the quality of a Bond film.

Wow, the trailer does show a lot from the movie. But It is a great trailer. Royale is my favorite Bond movie. Solace has the better trailer I think though.

I liked both of them. But I always hated what they do the poor Aston Martin DBS. Casino Royale rolls 7 times & Quantum of Solace it loses it door. It very dissappointing. But the movies were good.

Well, this film, like Iron Man, really surprised me. Craig was the perfect fit for the retelling of the Bond story. But he had his detractors in the beginning (me and my family were on that boat as well), but boy did he sink that boat with this film.
I didn't even care to see the film in theaters (wasn't keeping up with the ratings) until one of my family members gave it a rave review.
Now, anyone that I ask that hasn't seen it, I immediately pop it in and tell them to sit back and shut up.

Royale was brilliant.
it's a shame Quantum basically undid all of that.

I never understood how anyone could say Quantum ruined anything. It's the final act to Casino Royale, finishing the story arc and bringing us the Bond we previously knew, sans camp. It's more poetic, symbolic, and subtle in every possible way. Casino Royale is an amazing classically shot straight forward movie. Quantum was a necessarily more complex film for a character that had become more complex. The finale inside the flaming hotel when he genuinely faces death, rather than being a superman is one of the best scenes, if not the best, in the entire series, as he is reborn into the character we know and love.
