Porn Movies Shun Plot in Favor of, Er, Porn
Filed under: Newsstand, Home Entertainment
I am shocked -- shocked!! -- to learn that the porn industry is shunning plot, dialogue, and narrative arcs. Instead, they are increasingly focused on shooting ... wait for it ... more sex scenes! Who wudda thunk it? According to no less an authority than the New York Times, the pornographic movie industry is concentrating on creating "more short scenes that can be easily uploaded to Web sites and sold in several-minute chunks."
The article is accompanied by a photograph of porn star Savanna Samson looking pensive and sad as she stares into the distance. She laments: "I used to have dialogue ... I couldn't wait to get my next script," Nowadays, there is little reason for her to even look at the script. And doing one sex scene after another "just isn't as much fun." The industry is feeling pressure to cater to the short attention span (three to five minutes) of Internet users, claims Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. Industry observer Paul Fishbein says that DVD sales have fallen sharply "because the Internet has made it easy to watch snippets of video."
Declining DVD sales are also cited by the mainstream film industry as a major threat to their survival. Can Hollywood learn anything about adapting to changing viewing habits from the porn industry? I'm not saying they should start including explicit sex scenes designed for the Internet, but maybe the big studios should examine more closely how and what people are watching online. Right now the Internet is viewed as a last resort destination for films that can't get theatrical distribution. What if certain "A-list" films were rethought for online-only viewing, with big stars and a big marketing strategy?

I think there will be a convergence in the viewing model over time. The biggest problem now is that the infrastructure has to improve broadband-wise in order to accommodate the heavier loads.
I know that if I could have a dedicated "channel" for IP TV, I'd use it through a PC. Having Internet and TV on one channel choke big time - especially with cable modem pooling.
Of course, no one wants to put the big bucks up but they lobby for other crap. This would be an improvement. They could actually sell IP boxes that have different viewer sizes so a bar could get a 100+ viewer box while a family could get a 5 viewer box. It could even extend to theaters with "super-boxes" that can do IMAX, etc.
The cable companies have to get in on it too and realize that I CAN'T WATCH 100 FRICKIN CHANNELS. I'd pay the same amount for REAL PROGRAMMABILITY over 10 "channels."
Maybe I watch one or two shows on LifeTime but more on SciFi and even more on HBO. Servers can push all of this content to one channel on demand - especially with boxes that have storage. People could download their next day's content over night or just choose a channel or two to watch "live."
I don't have super fast cable modem (about 3MB/s MAX - depending n the pipe from the server) but I can get HD content pretty quick.
As far as porn, it all sucks now anyway. They've gone gonzo crazy with the assumption that you need dialog for passion or "wild and crazy" sex where the women are prized not prizes.
Let's not get started on that.

I guess Pirates 1&2 are the exception to this trend. They are quite plot heavy (and hilarious), plus they spent a ton on costumes, sets, and even CGI skeleton battles.

This is pretty sad news to anyone who needs some emotional attachment to character/fantasy to get their thrills. Without roleplay it's hard to escape the fact that you're watching heavily tattooed, crass and profane people screwing.
There's always hentai I guess.

Uhmmm ... yeah ... yeah ... that's it, I've just got a "short attention span" when I watch porn.
Come on, everyone knows if it takes more than 5 minutes to "kill kittens" when watching porn, you're not watching the right porn.

Industry observer Paul Fishbein --- what are the qualifications and application process. Sounds like an internship like none other for college kids.

I would never buy a porn DVD just because everything is available online so easily. i.e. there is a seinfeld spoof porn and within days its already online. I will say the reason people have a short attention span to porn is because the acting is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.
First off they dont give them mics so u can BARELY hear what they are saying. U can blast ur volume but once the sex starts u gotta turn it right back down because u dont everyone to know ur watching porn.
Put some damn mics on them so we can hear without having to adjust our volume every 2 seconds.
Come up with a proper story I dont care if u have to spoof real movies. But stop making it sound like they showed up 5 mins before it was time to shoot and u said do what u want.
I like the build up to a decent scene if its properly done. Otherwise its terribleeeeeeeeeeeee.

I actually like watching a good seduction scene. That includes dialouge. I'm actually not a fan of compliations where they just take a scene from different movies and they start right when the sex starts and snip out any dialouge between the characters involved.

Pornography is just a sick sham, disguising itself with supposed "story".
The fact that they are abandoning the whole story act just proves how shallow and disgusting the industry really is.
Pornography is a tasteless and disgusting mockery of everything beautiful in art and film. To even remotely compare it to filmmaking is useless.
PORN SUCKS!

When you are watching porn, it is like the greatest film you have ever seen but once you climax, you think it is the worst film you have ever seen.

Poor Savanna isn't having as much fun?
Declining DVD sales are a threat to the porn industry? Let's see....monthly access fees or pay-per-minute viewing by a huge audience versus the occasional DVD purchase.
Porn stars are showing up in mainstream films, the AVN awards are on cable TV along with reality shows following the filming of feature porn movies and you can order porn movies to your TV with your remote control by the film, in time blocks, or via channel subscription.
Sounds like the end is near.

@Quentin: Sorry you think sex is so disgusting. I'd hate to have lived through whatever made you that way. Have fun in seminary school. Please don't touch the children.
