Chow Says Ciao To 'Green Hornet'

On Friday, Spoiler TV posted casting call information for the role of Kato in The Green Hornet, Seth Rogen's long-struggling feature based on the iconic radio and television hero. Prior to the call, Kung Fu Hustle star, writer and director Stephen Chow was attached to play the role, and it would have been one immaculately suited for the longtime fan of Bruce Lee, who originated the role on TV. But now it appears that Chow has another feature he would like to do, and the ongoing scheduling problems the film has suffered appear to have resulted in him bowing out of the project. Thankfully, the filmmakers are maintaining only the highest and most specific standards in their search for a replacement:
"[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20's - early 40's. Brit Reid's manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet's martial arts-skilled sidekick by night. Actor doesn't have to have Martial Arts experience."
According to the IMDB, Chow has moved on to CJ7 2, the sequel to his answer to E.T., which was released in 2007 (and, in the interest of full disclosure, a film for which I contributed the quote "a sweet, funny family fantasy film"). Meanwhile, Rogen is without his ass-kicking sidekick, begging the question: who do you think they should cast as Kato? Suffice it to say there are countless working Asian and Asian-American actors who could handle the role's physical demands, but given what one presumes will be a slightly more comedic bent to the characters' mythology, who would you suggest strap on Kato's black mask and share the screen with Rogen's hirsute Hornet?

What about Tony Jaa? (Nowhere close to the same fighting style, but would make for some great action sequences!)

Ken Jeong. He has a ton of experience working with Rogen and comedies.

Unfortunately, even the best actor for the Kato role won't make up for the poor choice of Rogen as Green Hornet.

I'm so glad that Stephen Chow (who I worship) is out of this mess.
That said, a good choice for Kato would be Shin Koyomada, who played Nobutada, Ken Watanabe's son in The Last Samurai. He's young and good-looking, he can act AND he is a martial artist, plus he's from Japan but now lives in the U.S. and speaks English.
The only problem is he'd probably blow Seth Rogen off the screen. ;)

I can't necessarily agree. While Rogen isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think "action star," he might be able to do a decent rendition.
If they were to cast a "serious" actor, (IE: Clive Owen, Hugh Jackman, etc....) it would be treading suspiciously close to the Batman franchise (which is what pretty much killed the TV series in the '60s).
So long as Rogen doesn't butcher the character like Steve Martin did with the Pink Panther series, I think it'll do just fine.

Well if they want to go the comedic route, Ken Jeong would be good. I don't know if he has any martial arts skills, but apparently it doesn't matter.

Brandon Lee WOULD be an awesome choice!
I just checked out Shin Koyamada on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1259103/) and have to agree with Paula in saying that he would be fantastic for the part.

I'm ok with Chow leaving the project, they would probably be better off with a younger actor like Cho or Koyamada to play off Rogen, but why a sequal to CJ7? It was a decent little flick, but most of his other stuff is much better. Although I guess there is a lot more money in making PG movies. Still, I'd rather see a follow up to Shaolin Soccer. How about Baguazhang Baseball or Hoong Ka Hockey?

okay fellow movie fans, we all know that we a re dreading this project only because its becoming most lethargic in its progress.
Seth Rogen not so much a clear cut choice as Britt Reed, but he may surprise us....as for Kato i grew up watching the Green Hornet. They have to think this one over.. no martial arts skill needed? r they @#$%^ nuts? thats like saying the sun doesnt need the damn sky!! Whomever they decide to portray kato must be efficient in the arts its the only way that we as fans can accept the portrayal...and one other little thing. DO NOT!! Please do not alter the masks to the point where it looks chessy! i know there was different variations but as a fan do this character proud....PLEASE!!

Roger Fan from "Finishing the Game," where he played a Bruce Lee wannabe. If they're going for a comedic version, this is their guy.
Other Asian-Americans - maybe Sung Kang?. If they're looking overseas, maybe Takeshi Kaneshiro or Nicholas Tse since they're English speakers - or I'd love to see Daniel Wu come back stateside for a bit.

Its a movie folks. The guy doesn't need to ACTUALLY be proficient in martial arts, he just needs to look like he is on screen. What did Keanu Reeves call the matrix moves? "Movie-Fu"? Those fight scenes looked pretty damn amazing despite the fact that none of those guys knew how to do any martial arts before they signed on for the film. Lets cast the best actor for the job and then make sure they get his ass training before filming begins.
