SDCC: 'Avatar' to Screen 15 Minutes Worldwide in August
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Exhibition, Comic/Superhero/Geek, ComicCon
The Avatar panel just ended and the consensus on Twitter is that the footage was pretty breathtaking. Perhaps the biggest announcement for you folks who didn't get a chance to attend today's panel was that on August 21st, James Cameron will screen 15 minutes of Avatar in 3D at IMAX theaters worldwide ... for free. Yup, we'll all get a chance to see what all the hype is about a few months prior to the film's official release date of December 18th.
Off the top of my head, I don't know if anything like this has ever been done before. Sure there's the occasional press event where footage will be screened and we'll write it up afterwards (Watchmen and Star Trek both did this), but 20th Century Fox must have tons upon tons of faith in this film to go ahead and splurge on a worldwide screening of only 15 minutes of footage four and a half months prior to release. Whatever the case may be, I think it's pretty awesome that we'll get to taste this bad boy ahead of time -- though on the other hand, part of me would rather wait to experience it as a whole.
What do you think? Will you be seeing the 15-minute preview or waiting for the official release?
We'll have more from the Avatar panel later; in the meantime, check out the rest of our Comic Con coverage.

At the panel Cameron cited Star Trek TOS as his inspiration; this, with his track record, gives me confidence that Avatar may well be worth the hype and the wait....

Oh sweet I have an IMAX closeby to where I live I can't wait to view this footage.
I don't remember something this extensive being done before should be interesting.

So let me get this straight..
James Cameron --who is one of the greatest sci-fi/action filmmaker of all-time-- is going to let IMAX audiences around the country view 15 minutes of his Avatar --a computer generated sci-fi film of which I've seen absolutely nothing-- FOR FREE?!? I could wait the 4 1/2 extra months for the full version but why? I want a taste please! This will mark the only occasion it'll be worth my time to go to the IMAX.

I saw a special preview from my buddy who animates for James.
Absolutely ridiculous. I saw probably 20~25 minutes of the film, some parts not even close to finished, but I got a lot of the plot points, and let me tell you, this thing will rock, no matter how much of it you've seen previously.
Steal, cheat, lie or downright beg your way into an Imax on the 21st of August. It will be well worth it.

My only concern about the free 15 min trailer in IMAX will be that I will go nuts waiting to see the entire film months later!!! It is going to be SPECTACULAR
