Discuss: Embarrassing Film Favorites
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Lists

If you are somebody who is a little 'cinematically inclined', then I'm sure one of the questions you ask any new friend or foe is "So, what are some of your favorite movies?" Now I'm going to be honest here and tell you that if I'm trying to impress someone new, I might leave out a few of the less than 'high-minded' selections in favor of earning a little cool quotient by name dropping something underground or foreign. But, we've all got our dirty little secrets, and over at The Guardian Film Blog, Ryan Gilbey has taken the first step by admitting his top five embarrassing film obsessions.
Coming in at number one for Gilbey was John Landis' The Blues Brothers. As it turns out, Gilbey's love for the blues comedy faded as soon as he passed puberty and now his beloved film is "flat and joyless". But some of his other choices might surprise you, like Conan The Barbarian (which earned him plenty of commenter heat), and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (you can read the full list over at The Guardian). A little while back, Elisabeth bravely admitted that she was the owner of a DVD copy of Baz Luhrmann's romantic epic Australia (and what a relief it was to discover I wasn't the only one who fell prey to the infamous 'bucket scene') But, as shameful as that purchase might be, I think I might have it beat. Because, for my top five embarrassing favorites, unlike Gilbey, I'm not blaming them on my youth or nostalgia. Nope, my love of these five movies is just downright mortifying, so let's begin, shall we?
After the jump; My most humiliating movie favorites...
The Cutting Edge
Two words: "Toe pick".
Clue
Most people tend to stare blankly at me whenever I mention this movie. But for me, Madeline Kahn's Mrs. White is the stuff of legend.
French Kiss
To be honest, most rom-com's make me gag. But for some strange reason, this one makes me want to fall in love with a jewel thief and start a vineyard in the South of France.
Taken
Sure, it's a movie full of the most ridiculous coincidences you've ever seen, but it's also possibly the most satisfying revenge high I've ever gotten. Now I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say he makes good on his promises in this trailer.
Strange Days
Kathryn Bigelow's techno-thriller goes off the rails about two-thirds in, but Ralph Fiennes in tight leather pants is enough to keep this movie in rotation.
Well, I've aired my dirty laundry, and now it's your turn. Sound off in the comments below and give me your guiltiest cinema pleasures...

Honky Tonk Freeway. John Schlesinger's Altman-like, cast of thousands story about a small town in Florida's revenge for being bypassed by the interstate highway system and more! From Geraldine Page to Deborah Rush; Beverly D-Angelo to Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, it's one of the greatest ensemble pieces I find nobody's hardly ever, ever heard of or seen.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (My profanity education. At four years old I was already saying "son of a b!#ch!")
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (I can quote the whole thing as I watch it, line for line.)
Sleepy Hollow
Reign of Fire
And then its a toss up between The Incredibles and Monster's Inc. (I adore those movies.)
I know if I can really say my movie favorites are that embarrassing. What would be more embarrassing is the confession that the Wrath of Khan always - and I mean always - makes me cry at the end.

"Pirates of The Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" turned much better than it had any right to and is very entertaining, if a bit long. "Sleepy Hollow" is a fun, gothic tale. There's no such thing as a bad Pixar film (although "Cars" comes close). And "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is considered a modern classic. "Reign of Fire", however, belongs on a list of embarrassing films. Sorry.
I agree with you and others that there is nothing embarrassing about "The Blues Brothers". It's still a fun movie after almost 30 years, the music is fantastic, and it gave a second life to just about every musical artist in the film, including the band who recorded some of the original hits.

That guy's ridiculous...'Blues Brothers' is a classic.
But my pick would be 'Krull', loved it as a kid, but turned it off during my recent attempted rewatch. Sometimes the memory is better than the actual thing.
Also, 'Annie' is another one. I was shocked that I could have liked it at one time. And 'Cocoon'. Unlike 'Annie', it's not a weak movie, but it's just incredibly manipulatively sappy.

I got one for you - "The Private Eyes" starring Don Knotts and Tim Conway (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081376/)
When I was a kid, I literally thought this was the funniest movie EVER!

I wore out a Betamax copy of this movie when I was a kid. Watched it about 6 or 7 years ago and unfortunately found that it suffered from "KRS" (Knight Rider Syndrome), when you watch something as an adult that you loved as a kid, only to realize how terrible it really is.

Blues brothers is an awesome movie guys, it does not fall flat, at least not to me.
That Dan Aykroid desegregated this movie by participating in blues brothers 2000 is a whole other matter.
Makes me wonder just how good realistically will Ghos busters 3 be?
Techstar...ditto on Ford fairlane..lol

Actually I'm not ashamed of the movies I enjoy. I stand by Desperately Seeking Susan as a fun movie, not great but I like it.
Live and Let Die, my fave of the Moore Bond films.
I love the Pet Shop Boys' movie It Couldn't Happen Here. That movie doesn't get any love. :(
Blues Brothers an embarrassing movie?! Seriously?

How can I take someone's opinion seriously when they're *embarrassed* to like The Blues Brothers?

I must agree above with the shock that Clue could be at all embarrassing. It's classic! (although that's nothing compared to being ashamed of Blues Brothers)
Me, I've always been proud of my crappy film love. Two of a Kind, Nobody's Fool, Under the Boardwalk, Grease 2..
Heck, my first memory of Mr. Weinberg was meeting him and seeing his lip curl when I spoke of my love for Fire with Fire.

Fire with Fire was awesome. One of my favorites is The Big Hit with Lou Diamond Phillips and Mark Wahlberg, I love that movie. I also have a soft spot for The Postman which I did not think was that horrible. Another favorite is The Sword and the Sorcerer, love me some 80s. Also the Charlie Sheen flick The Wraith is kinda cool.

It seems silly to be embarrassed about a movie. Especially when it's as good a Clue or Blues Brothers. Come on. Everybody likes Blues Brothers!

Vertical Limit: Ok, they have to rescue someone hit by an avalanche on the top of K2, Scott Glen is leading them on the hike so he can get revenge on the guy who killed his wife, and they have to bring nitroglycerin that explodes if sunlight hits it. Count me IN!
Joe vs The Volcano:It's just such a light, fun, fluffy movie I can't help but smile.
