'Orphanage' Remake Gets A Director; Also, 'Orphanage' To Be Remade

Color me surprised.I feel like I shouldn't be any time something gets in line to be remade, but I thought we would've heard about a remake of the J.A. Bayona-directed, Guillermo del Toro-produced thriller The Orphanage by now. Well, it's indeed in the works, with del Toro remaining on board as producer and Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter) being brought on as director, according to THR.
An actor, producer, director, writer and editor in his own right, Fessenden has no small familiarity with the horror genre -- even presently starring as a grave robber in this Friday's horror-comedy, I Sell the Dead -- and his more considered filmmaking style seems ideal for a story that turns out to have as much sorrow in store as spooks.
The Reporter notes the the project is still in need of a lead actress. The original hinged on Belén Rueda's wonderfully empathetic performance; who do you think could fill the role of leading lady in this case? Not to dwell on that Lovely Bones post, but I really do think Rachel Weisz could bring the right sensibility to this, or maybe Diane Lane... Your thoughts?

The 2-year old original is in Spanish. Murkins don't like subtitles.
This seems along the lines of the US remakes of the much scarier Japanese originals of "The Grudge" and "The Ring".

Yep, original is great. My wife is so scared of tomas. I want to dress my son as Tomas for Halloween in a few years. :)

If a remake is going to be made, then let i have the best actresses english-spoken market has in that age range. Rachel Weisz or Kate Winslet could do the part perfectly but maybe they think the original was good enough.

This is ridiculous. With J-horror and classics out of the equation, it happened to Rec (how did Quarantine come out?)...ok now I can't think of others...
It's even more disappointing with the truth that so many Murkins don't want to deal with subtitles.
"Well I don't want to spend the whole time reading and miss the movie."
What a waste of so many good movies that are going to be remade.
Let me guess; Let the Right One In is going to be remade too?
Any movie that people get drilled with promotion is going to break even. Is that more expensive than doing a remake that won't be as good as the original and unknown to the mainstream?
Everyone I know who went to see Kung Fu Hustle in the theaters without knowing about it beforehand loved it. Why were they surprised it didn't do better? Lack of promotion.

I absolutely loved, loved the original. Although, I dont necessarily think it should be remade, I often thought the actress in the movie bared a striking resemblance to Maria Bello.

Ooooh, it just dawned on me who would be great as the male lead-- Josh Lucas resembles the actor in the original. So, my choices would be Maria Bello and Josh Lucas. =)
