Which Film People Could Be Guest Judges on 'American Idol'?
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Fandom, Home Entertainment
Pardon me if I don't shed a tear that Paula Abdul will not be returning as a judge on the next season of American Idol. As a relentless cheerleader for the contestants, she was beloved, as a foil for the evil Simon Cowell, she was feisty, but her time has come and gone. (And I say that lovingly as a former high school classmate. OK, she never knew I existed, but still...) Producers have already lined up Victoria Beckham as a guest judge, but I think they should look to the fabulous film world for future guest judge-ships.
Here are my quick picks.
- Kevin Smith. He'd definitely be funny, could snap back at Simon's ferocity, and could dish out insults as needed.
- Drew Barrymore. She would bring Paula's positive vibe and be very kind when rejecting the talentless.
- Julie Andrews. The great star of The Sound of Music and The Princess Diaries returns in the The Tooth Fairy next January.
- Mel Gibson. Don't you want to see the grizzled, suicidal star of The Road Warrior and Lethal Weapon telling no-talents where they can stick their singing voice? His Australian heritage would also set him up for epic battles with Simon Cowell. And Edge of Darkness is scheduled for next January.
- Jennifer Lopez. The lady has been out of the film spotlight for a while, but will return in The Back-Up Plan. She knows her music, and could rival Randy in telling contestants "yo, dog!"
- Quentin Tarantino. Bring him back as a judge this time, not just a coach or "guest director."
Who do you want to see sitting on that infamous panel of judges?

I'd like to see Amy Winehouse or Johnny Rotten.
(Now THAT would be worth watching!)

Ah, no one. Whenever they have any sort of guest whatsoever it's like watching a car wreck. No wonder Simon wants 100 mill.
Maybe if Tarantino spent more time concentrating on making movies and less on trying to get on TV, I would not of fallen asleep during Death Proof.

I really don't care for the 4-judge format. Rather than having more judging, why not have more singing (i.e. longer songs rather than drive-bys)? What a concept. My own fault for watching; I should stop. As to the question: How about Rob Marshall or Baz Luhrmann? Too musical-y?

Jennifer Lopez has already been on the show at least once, maybe twice, and was pretty heavily promoted, so I'm not sure the person who wrote this ever watched the show other than once or twice. Other than Tarantino, I can't think of anyone who has ever been on the show who never had a career of any kind that did not involve music.
If I had to have a Hollywood celebrity, Larry David would at least be funny.
And if anyone should replace Paula it should be Courtney Love. I can't think of anyone else who would be as big a train wreck. Plus Mono is a really under rated song.

Thanks for pointing out that Ms. Lopez has already appeared on the show.
I confess: I've watched every season, but only the early auditions. Once they've got the contestants whittled down to the finalists, I tune out.

That means you can actually stomach the bad auditions & attention seekers they make you sit through. This is the part I can't watch.

Did I really just read something that said that Jennifer Lopez knows her music? Lopez is a hack, with absolutely no vocal skills. Ever listen to her sing? Her range goes slighty higher than a monotone. She's terrible.

I think Julie Andrews would do great as a judge! :D Just because she's more into Broadway doesn't mean she can't handle pop -- she CAN, I tell you. She's so good when it comes to musical quality that I know that she would give really great 'equilibrium' to the judges and straightforward, constructive and even witty critiques on the contestants' performances.
So if I had to pick, I'd pick the wonderful Julie Andrews. She has a really good ear. ;)
