Will You See Michael Jackson This Halloween?

The title of the Reuters story says it all and so much more: Coroner completes Jackson autopsy, film deal set. Columbia Pictures will be distributing This is It, which will be comprised of Jackson's preparation for the tour of the same name. Kenny Ortega, who directed High School Musical 3: Senior Year and has choreographed everything from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Dirty Dancing to To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, will direct. (Ortega worked on the concerts with Jackson.)Since some of the scenes shot for the concert were in 3D, we can expect to see Jackson coming at us in all three dimensions in some theaters this October 30th. The footage itself is owned by concert promoters AEG, who are desperately trying to take advantage of the mourning for MJ, so I would imagine that the company will be taking a cut of the profits. AEG is already working on numerous deals to try and recoup its $30M investment.
According to Reuters, "Lawyers spent much of Monday in court wrangling over merchandising deals still being planned and a traveling exhibition of Jackson memorabilia that concert promoter AEG Live, which backed the London concerts, wants to mount."
An attorney for AEG Live, which spent as much as $30 million preparing for the comeback concerts, argued the company needed to move quickly to take advantage of the resurgence in the singer's popularity to help recoup its investment. Several of the 'Thriller' singer's albums, for instance, have returned to the top of the music charts in recent weeks, whereas before his death his CD sales had languished.
'The longer we wait, the more time passes. Frankly the less interest there will be on the part of the public to come see the exhibit,' said Kathy Jorrie, an attorney for AEG Live."
Will you go see This is It? Or did you get your fill from the news networks' media circus surrounding his death?

I just can't believe it's coming out so quickly.
It truly seems like a rush job meant to capitalize on the grief and curiosity of the public instead of a carefully assembled final ode.

I will definitely go see it. Anything for MJ. Most of the movie's profits will go to Michael's estate which in turn go to his kids, mother, and charities.
I was going to see him live in January in London, and I'll always regret I never got to see him perform in person. I'm looking forward to seeing what MJ was working on for us fans... it was supposed to be the greatest production act of all time.
Long live the KING.

I don't think trying to recoup millions of dollars is greed. and the movie won't be just thrown together, MJ was at the end of rehearsals, so all the tape is there, 100 feet of footage i believe. it would be a waste of gigantic proportions to just set it aside. true MJ fans want to see anthing Michael. i surely intend to see the movie. and anthing else MICHAEL.

I'll be going more than once. It'll retire some of Michael's debts so that something is left for his children & charities. 90% of money goes to the trust (kids/Katherine/charities) + 10% goes to Sony (out of which $60M was pd. to AEG).
Another way of looking at it is as a form for his hundreds of millions of fans to get closure, mourn, pay tribute and pay their respects since they couldn’t be at the memorial, and each screening will be a memorial of sorts. The film isn’t just an assemblage of the rehearsals and 3D backdrops, it’s also a retrospective of Michael Jackson’s career including testimonials from friends & colleagues.
Michael’s fanbase was and is broad, deep, global and crosses age, national, racial, ethnic, gender, class, educational background and religious lines. With his death, it has only deepened and broadened as a new generation has discovered his music and dance. We come in all stripes and colors, all of us agreed on the brilliance of his genius – and that he was gone too soon.

You're right as far as your quote from Reuters, but since you didn’t give the context, your readers can be misled. I’ve been following the Jackson probate saga (through Reuters, AP, LA Times, etc.) because I’m concerned about the Jackson children’s fate given how Michael fared with his parents. Katherine Jackson (w/Joe pulling the strings?) is the cause of all the wrangling. She wants to re-write everything that Michael’s appointed executors have negotiated with AEG and everyone else. AEG & the executors are right – Kathryn is being stupid & irresponsible to herself & the children. There’s something called fiduciary duty (I’m a retired legal secretary). Michael’s fans will always be around. Right now there’s a lot of casual interest in him because he’s newsworthy – that interest will be lost the longer time goes on. The longer new books, records, etc. take to reach the shelves and the public, the more opportunity is lost.
Basically she is trying to contest the will without calling it that. She wants to take control, which IMO is disastrous all around because I believe the Jacksons are not only venal and greedy, they are incompetent and will run the trust into the ground within a few years. If she & the rest of them could be patient, get out of the way and let the executors do their job, they’d be set for life.
