'Avatar' Day Details Finally Announced

The 16-minute Avatar trailer will show at 6-7 pm on August 21st, sandwiched between IMAX showings of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and will be a blend of what screened at ComicCon, but with some brand new footage added. Though IMAX and Fox are predicting a general geek stampede, they're trying to combat the frenzy by limiting tickets to two per person. (So pick which friend or family member you like the most!) For those of us who don't nab a golden ticket, there's still hope. An alternate, "conventional" trailer will be debuting the same time in 2D and 3D, and will play before Post Grad, Inglourious Basterds, and other summer and fall releases. You won't be able to get away from Avatar footage.
So, August 21 is the day we'll all be members of the Avatar cult or scoffing at the whole idea of it. From where I sit, the reaction to the footage is going to be just as interesting as finally seeing the technology that no one could really describe. This is a big moment to see how it flies with the general moviegoing public who has no idea that Cameron has anything in the pipeline. Will they be impressed? Will they shrug it off as just another CG or mo-cap movie?

Call me strange, but I'm having a hard time getting interested in an allegedly huge movie, coming out in just 4 months, which is getting practically zero mainstream promotion.

I agree it's got little mainstream promotion so far BUT MAN DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE? That level of promotion is unheard of so I think that catches it up pretty quick.

Mark, I agree.... but at the same time this is primarily because they are keeping things very quite for that reason. Expect things to pick up in the last quarter of the year. Usually only big movies will spend the cash to release promos 8-12 months in advanced to generate buzz. This movie doesn't need to worry about that... the fans are doing it for them and given Cameron's body of work there is no doubt this movie will deliver.

I'd rather be kept somewhat in the dark than bombarded with promos from around the time of the Super Bowl and practically see the whole movie from the ads before it even comes out. Word of mouth is more than enough for right now. Besides, if I recall this was essentially how Cameron rolled out Titanic, so as far as he's concerned why would he mess with a successful strategy?
