D'oh! McAdams Spoils 'Time Traveler's Wife' on Daily Show
Filed under: Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Home Entertainment, Trailers and Clips

I understand why actors and actresses go on TV shows and promote their upcoming movies, but at some point prior to their appearance, you might think someone might say, "Hey, by the way, let's not reveal these details because they kinda spoil the entire film." Unfortunately, no one said that to Rachel McAdams yesterday when she appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as it only took, like, one or two questions before the girl just opened up and spewed plot points from The Time Traveler's Wife as if someone injected her with a dose of truth juice.
Don't get me wrong, McAdams seems like a sweet girl and all, but c'mon! Even Jon Stewart tried to stop her from ruining everything by doling out his usual shtick, but the girl kept going and going -- it was seriously a complete trainwreck. Recently at Comic-Con, Cameron Diaz did something similar while sitting on a panel for The Box, giving away a major twist in that film, which incited a debate between a bunch of folks on Twitter wondering why these people aren't prepped before these types of appearances. And if they are prepped, shouldn't they be smart enough to know what to say and what not to say?
Which brings us to an interesting topic: How much or how little should an actor, actress or filmmaker be able to talk about their film while promoting it on television? Usually at a press junket they'll open up about everything because everyone there has seen the movie, but what sort of adjustments should these folks make when they go on, say, The Daily Show? Was McAdams wrong for giving away all those plot points, or are we just making a big deal out of nothing?

I'm not watching it because I don't want it to be spoiled, but I feel like they should know not to reveal twists without being told. Maybe she was nervous? I really like Rachel McAdams.

Well, to be fair: Jon accidentally guessed a plot point at the start of the interview. I guess at some point Rachel thought, "hey, the cat's out of the bag, might as well" while Jon tried to stop her. It was hilarious.

I don't really consider it a major spoiler if the film is based on a novel, unless they've diverged from it significantly. Even if you haven't read the novel, the story is public knowlege by now. ( I realize the Internet has kinda changed the rules on what constitutes public knowlege these days though ;) )

While I doubt I will go see this film I know nothing about the plotline or spoilers. My wife (an internet addict like myself) is looking foward to a "girl's night" viewing and knows nothing about it either. There are a FEW of us out there who frequent the internet hotspots but don't hear every spoiler.

Sometimes finding out bits and pieces about a film or novel makes me want to see it more, and though I don't usually enjoy finding out major plot points like this. I found the trailer to be a bit boring so these tidbits she mistakenly reveals actually heightened my interest in seeing the material. :)

I think the trailer kinda gave most of it away anyway. It states right in the trailers that he's a time traveler and can't stop it, and shows the scenes of him meeting a young Clare.

I think a better question would be what is Rachel McAdams doing on The Daily Show in the first place? "One of these things is not like the other."

To be fair, Stewart kinda led her on. He would say "Don't give it away!" and then "So what happens after that?" kinda thing. I blame her for not keeping it under wraps, but when a talk show host asks you a direct question on national TV, I'd imagine it's hard not to answer it.

My thought is that the trailer wasn't interesting in the first place. There was absolutely no plot given in the trailer; we only saw Rachel McAdams sad and lonely every other scene because Bana was gone. In this interview, though, the movie sounds A LOT more interesting. However, the plot points she gave away certainly were big, so I don't agree that she used her better words here. She should have used less. Even though the movie sounds more interesting now, I'm still not going to see it.

I really loved the movie. It's one of those movies that you will enjoy a second time around because of the concept of the film. After you get past trying to understand the logic of the film, you can identify that it's a lovely romance not as melodramatic as most love stories.

I read pieces of the novel in a different order, which doesn't make any difference really. It's a time travel story, you kind of get spoilers because of that. But really it's about the emotional situation and her story. Not the plot.
I bet the film leaves a lot out from the book and is maybe different generally. One thing at least in the book contradicts what she said about the film, so we'll see.

i saw this movie last night and its lingers with me still. I cried through the last half of this movie. it was devestating and one of the most emotional movies that ive seen. i didnt read the book but really not interested in reading it now. you really have to pay attention to what happens because its easy to get lost. So bring tissues and maybe take some antidepressants. Good luck
