Kate Winslet Heads for TV in 'Mildred Pierce' Remake
Filed under: Classics, Thrillers, Casting, Remakes and Sequels

When you hear the name Mildred Pierce, and you happen to know your classic cinema, you probably go right to one woman: she of the big eyebrows and shoulder pads...better known as Joan Crawford. Crawford won her one and only Oscar for her role in Michael Curtiz's crime classic, and now another Oscar winning actress has signed for a remake of the noir tale, but this time it's for the small screen. Variety is reporting that Kate Winslet has joined forces with director Todd Haynes to star in a remake of Pierce as a cable miniseries.
Mildred Pierce was the story of a woman determined take on the restaurant world and make a better life for her daughters, only to have her eldest turn on her, and after much slapping and running up and down the stairs, Mildred finally *r
After the jump; why a Mildred Pierce remake might not be so bad, and Sonic Youth's tribute to Crawford's 'Mother with a heart of lead'...
According to sources, HBO is expected to snap up the property, but nothing has been put to paper. But I have to tell you that as much as I am no fan of pointless remakes, there is something about the combination of Winslet, who is exceptional at play unsympathetic mothers and wives with Haynes, who has a way with recreating the look of classic films, that makes me think there just might be hope for this project yet.
*Correction: The murder of Monte Beragon was added for the film version, and was not in Cain's original novel.

I love Kate Winslet, and Todd Haynes is an amazing director, but I really wish he'd cast Julianne Moore in the title role. Kate seems a little young to be playing the mother of a teenager, even by 1950s standards.

Haynes and Moore did work well together in "Far From Heaven", his homage to Douglas Sirk's films.

Yes -- she was also in SAFE and I'M NOT THERE, and almost played Mandy in VELVET GOLDMINE. I really like the Moore/Haynes collaboration, which is why I'm sad she won't be in MILDRED.

Uhhh... you do know the novel doesn't contain a murder right? That was just in the film version. The novel had Mildred's daughter steal her new husband away

Dovetailing on Mark's comment, in the book there was no murder . In the movie, Mildred was not the murderer.

Why do they want to remake such brilliant orginals like Mildred Pearce, Psycho,Sabrina, and other such ...! The late great Joan Crawford was superb in this film noir, and Winslet nor Moore could never really hold a candle to Crawford's version of this terrific movie..cant they find new stories to film instead and leave the golden oldies as they were...?

kate Winslot is no Joan Crawford, and I believe the remake is going to suck. Mildred Pierce is my all time favorite movie. I remember the First time I saw it and I was ten years old. I was amazed at Joan's performance. I also like Joan in the Queen Bee. Joan was a star.
Kate trying to take the spot of Joan Crawford. It will be hard for her to fill her shoes. Just like Kate would have hard a natural time of filling Dolly Parton's bra. No Dice.
Hollywood remakes often bites. They need to come up with fresh material
