Superheroes That Deserve Another Chance
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Lists

Now that our Superhero Tournament is nearing the home stretch, I've been looking at some of the 'losers' and thinking about all the costumed heroes that have fallen by the wayside over the years. But then I remembered that reboot fever is alive and well in Hollywood, and the latest victim is Todd McFarlane, who's apparently working on a new Spawn script according to various reports. (But isn't he always working on a new Spawn script?)
Considering how beloved Spawn is in the world of comic books, it really is a shame that he wound up with such a crappy movie -- and if the Rotten Tomatoes rating is any indication, time has not improved this flick in the eyes of fans. Luckily for us then that McFarlane will be starting from scratch, and by the sounds of things, thankfully, there will be far fewer fart jokes. McFarlane told Coming Soon's sources, "The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary."
McFarlane has only just started writing, so it could be some time before we see a finished product -- but, when we do, it's going to be a brand new Spawn. McFarlane told CS, "the tone of this 'Spawn' movie will be for a more older audience. Like the film 'Departed.'" Okay, that might be a bit of a strange comparison, but then again, I'm all for taking superheroes a little more seriously.
After the jump: the five 'masked avengers' I think deserved better on the big screen...

Dark Phoenix (X-Men: The Last Stand)
There isn't much to say about this that Elisabeth hasn't already covered. But I couldn't make a list about maligned superheroes without mentioning Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix in Ratner's X3. I have a devoted X-Men fan in my life, and let me tell you -- for him, the mishandling of The Dark Phoenix storyline has become the stuff of nightmares. I may not be an expert, but even I knew that Ratner managed to blow one of the biggest story lines in comic book history ... and that ain't good.

Catwoman
I like to pretend that the 2004 flick starring Halle Berry battling an evil cosmetics giant never happened, so for me, Catwoman has never had her own movie. Now, granted, Catwoman only exists because of Batman, but that doesn't mean she has to stay trapped in Gotham. How about giving Selena Kyle her own universe for awhile? Heck, why not make her a bit of an anti-hero? It's about time we got a few shades of gray in our lady heroes in the movies, and Catwoman would be the perfect start.

Elektra
Despite her time on Alias, I never really bought Jennifer Garner as an action hero. She just seems to lack a certain edge. Frank Miller's creation is one of the most beloved female superheroes in comic book history, and let's face it: that 2005 spin-off was embarrassing. To be fair, it didn't exactly get an auspicious beginning with Daredevil, but once again, there is plenty to work with. Just as long as you get a gal who can handle herself with a bladed sai we should be in business.

The Phantom
I like those old 30's heroes so maybe that's why the I have a soft spot for The Phantom. (Hey, you are talking to someone who's watched The Shadow more times than she would like to admit). I mean, doesn't the guy who introduced us to the 'superhero leotard' deserve a little respect? All the elements of a reboot are there: You've got a nifty back story, exotic settings, and since there's a Phantom for every generation, you aren't even confined to a specific time period -- and it looks like someone out there agrees with me.

Superman
This may seem to be an odd choice considering the Man of Steel will probably get another movie sooner or later, but I think we can probably agree that Bryan Singer's Superman wasn't exactly what we were hoping for. For me, all Singer managed to do was remind me of how kick-ass Donner's film was in the first place. So maybe this time around we can get something just a little more original. It wasn't that Singer made a terrible movie, it just wasn't his movie, and I think Kal-El deserves a little bit better than that, don't you?
Sound off in the comments below on the superheroes you think deserve another shot at the box-office...

I would like to see a Superman/Brainiac movie. He's one of the few classic Superman villains that could give him a run for his money, yet he's never made it to the big screen.
As for The Shadow, my big problem with that film was that it tried to hard to be camp, when it should have been dark, maybe almost scary. That wouldn't be too bad.
A decent Flash Gordon movie would be pretty good to see either. Something really epic.

The first movie was great, so it doesn't need a reboot, but i'd love to see more of The Rocketeer.

They need to do The Fantastic Four properly. Dr Doom is the greatest villain in the history of comic books and they turned him into a buffoon. Has one person who ever read the comic book ever imagined that he would sound like that when he spoke?
Venom as well really pooped the bed. Sam Raimi had zero interest or respect for the character and it showed. Again, stupid voice ruined a really cool character. Lets just bring him in at the end and kill him off quickly so he's in the movie as little as possible.
I never really read Spawn, but from what I understand it's not quite what it used to be. McFarland has been saying he's working on a script for a new movie for yearrrrrrrrrrrrrsssssss and it's never going to happen. He just comes off as saying it just to build interest for a movie that no one has any for.

I'd really like to see a good Iron Man movie. That Robert Downey Jr. one sucked.
Just kidding, please don't kill me.
Seriously though, if anyone deserves a good movie adaptation it'd be Ghost Rider. No Nicholas Cage this time please.

Well everytime this comes up, I feel the need to plug Miller's Dark Knight Returns for the precise reasons mentioned in this post. Superman needs to be taken in context and there is no one better to play off of than Batman. Forget that Nolan is doing his series. This is either an alternate future/past (worked for Inglourious Basterds) and set it apart from current canon.
Done. Now you don't have to worry about how it fits in with Bale.
Get Mark Millar to write/direct. Or Zach Snyder.
Hire Bruce Willis or Clint Eastwood to play Batman/Bruce Wayne. Jon Hamm to play Superman or Patrick Warburton.
Ellen Page to play the new Robin. Get Christopher Walken to play the aged Joker maybe?
The point is it would be a guaranteed blockbuster, would showcase how Superman is one half of the coin and Batman the other. C;mon, you've all read it. It needs to be made. Pay the Siegels what they want so you don't lose your linchpin to Marvel. And give us longtime (1965 til now) fans what we've been waiting for.
(And don't be afraid to do a 3D CGI super hero movie like Avatar.)

Doesn't Superman die like crap in TDKR? Doesn't sound like making him justice to me.

I can't picture Bruce Willis as Batman at all. The voice maybe, but there rest of him just doesn't work for me. I've always liked Russell Crowe as Superman though. If you can get anyone to be Superman, wouldn't you want Maximus?
I can't see them ever actually going though and making a Batman vs Superman movie. You would have to make one of them the bad guy, and thus potentially kill a franchise.

The Spirit needs a proper turn as well. Go back to the orginal material using comic stories. There were such great stories!(Like when the Spirit was blind, or badly wounded and lying in an alley during a heatwave.) Plenty to go on. Make sure the Octopus is what and who he was supposed to be, a master of disguise criminal who died by the guns of his own men, only ever to be seen as a pair of gloves.
And put the Spirit in a blue suit damnnit!

The X-Men's Rogue. I mean, the Rogue I loved, the flying brick, the southern belle, the kick ass character. Now mind you, I liked most of the X-films. I just like the Rogue that flew and had an attitude better than th Anna Paquin version.
Also, while we're at it Supergirl and Steel need some more live action. But good.

Superman - Reboot using the "Superman: Birthright" graphic novel and go from there. No bastard child, no land-craving Lex Luthor and more action to balance out the drama. And for chrissakes, give the Lois Lane role to Anne Hathaway.
X-Men - I don't really hate Brett Ratner; I enjoy the Rush Hour films and Red Dragon. But he screwed the pooch on X3. Reboot with X-Men: First Class like they seem to want to do and go from there.
Batman - Not the character of Batman, but some classic villians need a reboot. The Penguin, Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy all need a makeover. Whether Nolan wants to or not, get someone to give these characters another chance to shine.
Howard the Duck - ???

I'd love to see a Daredevil movie based on Bendis-Brubaker Run. Specially Brubaker run. And please, this time use someone who looks like a red-head irish as Matt Murdock. And of course i'd love to see a Dark Phoenix and Fantastic Four retelling.

The first thought that came to mind when I saw your title was "The Phantom". They only had Gold Key Comics at my closest comics source as a kid, so I actually read more Phantom than Batman and always thought he had a special sort of cool going for him. I didn't hate the movie adaptation, but it would be great to see it done really well. But then again, I'd like to see Tarzan done well, too, which has NEVER been done either.
